    Mega Alakazam is by no means a downgrade to regular Zam. Base 150 Speed is among the fastest in the game, and base 175 Sp. Atk is also among the highest in the game. Mega Alakazam can still take plenty advantage of Magic Guard to avoid entry hazard damage switching in, and Trace allows it to do funny stuff vs guys like Heatran, Magearna, and Tornadus-T. Save it for when the opposing team is weakened and you've got quite the potent late-game cleaner. In Gen 6 OU, Mega Alakazam is ranked A+ in viability (9th overall) compared to base Alakazam's C+ (75th overall). In Gen 7, the Mega is once again ranked A+ in OU (also 9th overall), while the base form isn't even ranked in OU. Then Gen 8 gave it Nasty Plot and now Mega Zam is banned in all Nat Dex formats.
    Similar story with Latios actually. In Gen 6 the Mega is far less useful than the base form, but Gen 7 onward the Mega is actually preferred due to its better defenses and mixed-attacker potential. Mega Latios is ranked A in Gen 7 OU (25th overall), while base Latios is nowhere to be seen. The unofficial Nat Dex formats play out similarly, with the Mega being ranked somewhere while the base form remains absent

    The BIGGEST issue with mega garchomp is that you're only allowed to mega evolve one pokemon per battle. So if you're going to do it you want to do it to a pokemon that only benefits from it. Mega evolving a pokemon for a trade off is a waste of opportunity cost.

    • @egshwhwjwnoeowkwkw9809
      @egshwhwjwnoeowkwkw9809 Před 6 měsíci +1

      This is a terrible argument. Lets say garchomp was a really bad mon, maybe it has truant or something, doesn't matter. But mega chomp stays the same. By your logic, since mega chomp is now a strict upgrade from chomp, its now worth using, despite it being only as good as it was before. Now this would make sense if both pokemon filled the exact same roles, but that isn't the case.

      @@egshwhwjwnoeowkwkw9809 Think about it this way. Imagine there was a pokemon that was functionally identical to mega garchomp in stats, typing, ability, and movepool, but it wasn't a mega, it was just a normal pokemon. That pokemon would probably have a roll or at least a niche maybe even in a different tier than garchomp. It would probably see usage because it doesn't restrict you from using something else. Mega garchomp keeps you from using other ou megas. And it could never be lower than ou because because base garchomp is ou. The megas that weren't as good on paper still got usage in lower tiers because they were strict upgrades from their base forms. Mega beedrill did better in uu than mega garchomp did in ou.

    • @egshwhwjwnoeowkwkw9809

      @@blakdeth Mega Garchomp DOES have a niche in ou though. It may not have enough usage to properly be ou, but plenty of uu pokemon are decent in ou. All megas restrict you from using other megas. Using mega beedrill restricts you from using the much better mega aerodactyl or altaria. Megas don't get usage because they're strict upgrades, they get usage because they're good pokemon (or not). I would argue that mega chomp in ou is in fact better than mega beedrill in uu, but thats not really relevant to the discussion. Base forms and megas are different pokemon. They are tiered differently (aside from megas not being able to be in a lower tier than their base forms) and their viabilities are independent. Whether a mega is good or not has nothing to do with its base form, for the most part.

    • @blakdeth
      @blakdeth Před 6 měsíci +3

      @@egshwhwjwnoeowkwkw9809 a mega can be ranked higher than the base form, but never lower. There was a time mega garchomp was considered "ou by technicality" because for all intents and purposes it was a uu pokemon but you couldn't have mega garchomp on your team without first putting normal garchomp on your team so it couldn't drop. It's since been doing better for itself, i just checked the oras viability rankings and mega garchomp is rated as a c in ou. So yeah I guess it did eventually get A niche. I just never anticipated that because they used to tell you to never use mega garchomp.

    Another pokemon that can run tera poison well in my opinion is Hydreigon. Not only does it lose its weakness to fairy and turn in intona Resistance but levitate makes it immune to ground which poison is normally weak too. And you might ohko some slower psychic type because tera also keeps the STAB of the original pokemon and hydreigon was a dark type.

    • @MusSupremeJAR03
      @MusSupremeJAR03 Před 6 měsíci +2

      Adding, it is also resistant to Fighting Type Move, one of Hydreigon's original weaknesses because it was originally of the Dark Type, contrary to Tera Steel, which, even if it resists the Fairy Type and continues to function with Levitation, immunizing the Ground Type, which shares the same weakness when Fighting Type Move does not make it viable with Hydreigon, unlike with Tera Poison which is 100% beneficial [and I doubt they will use a Psychic Type Move against Hydreigon for, well, obvious reasons]

    Few things to add
    1.) Mega Alakazam never saw much use in Gen 6, but it got a ton of indirect buffs in Gen 7. It's huge speed stat now activated immediately, so it could start threatening "fast" offensive pokemon like Weavile immediately. Then trace became a lot more useful because of stuff like Beast Boost, Soul Heart and Swift Swim from Swampert becoming more common. Alakazam was maybe the only offensive mega with a good match up into Mega Swampert, pretty notable. Lastly, Psychic Terrain made is figuratively impossible to wall and literally impossible to knock out with priority. Teams with Alakazam and Tapu Lele were everywhere and there was never an easy way to stop them. Imo it was one of the better megas of the gen.
    2.) Diancie never gets to play in VGC because of its mythical status, but it seriously got so little out of dynamax. Its main thing is spamming strong Diamond Storms, an amazing spread move, but when Dynamax'd it just becomes an average rock type.
    3.) Poison Tera has recently caught on with a lot of Calm Mind sweepers like Cresselia in OU and Sinistcha in UU because it gives toxic immunity while not opening themselves to wallbreakers who spam Close Combat. It's niche but nowhere near Tera Psychic.
    4.) As is the norm for Gen 9, Tyranitar is the biggest loser when it comes to tera. A lot of people expected Tyranitar to love tera because that typing has so many weakness, but terastalizing leads to it being hurt by its own sand. Not only that, but Ttar's typing was a double edged sword. Because of Spdef buff in sand, Ttar has long been one of the best answers to ghosts, fire and a lot of other general special threats and now you just have to throw that in the trash. It really can't take part in the defining feature of Gen 9 which sucks

      no wonder our favorite tera dragon hippo prefers his hidden ability to sand stream. if tyranitar were to tera at all, while keeping his sand immunity, would ground make the most sense? it is a vanilla tera on a newly hatched larvitar and you do remove the x4 weakness to fighting. the bad news? still weak to water and grass (and now ice, another common attack type)
      as for tera bug, it makes sense on Ursaluna should Katy be able to evolve her ace all the way (provided the Indigo Disk is the way to do this without having to do all the garbage that is legends Arceus) for not only defense, but bug tera blast + ground stab + rock is unresisted even as of gen9natdex, unless you count the beyond broken tera shedinja.

    bug is trash offensively but defensively it is actually okay.
    resisting both ground and fighting (the best offensive types) at once is a very valuable defensive trait.
    the reason why it is not such great choice defensively is because the flying-type is usually better since it offers an immunity to ground instead of a resistance.
    bug has the defensive niche over the flying type of not being hit super effectively by volt switch and not being weak to ice (an other excellent offensive type).

      Mega was cool because it was a way to give older and weaker Pokémon a chance, but it sucked because so many that didn’t need them got them and it was so limited. I prefer gimmicks that are balanced and allow all Pokémon to take advantage of them. Tera is easily the best imo because it provides more strategy. It can be sued offensively or defensively, with any Pokémon being able to use any Tera type so it can allow for more in depth and unique strategies. Megas are super predictable and bland outside of cool designs

    Surprised you didn't at least mention Ice Teratype. I mean, yeah, Ice is a damn good type offensively, but we all know how notoriously awful it is in terms of defenses. Even worse, they got rid of Hail this generation, so that's one less defensive benefit that the typing could've had.
    BTW, thank you for acknowledging Poison's defensive utilities. Even before Fairy better justified using it, defense has arguably been Poison's strong suit. I mean, an Earthquake weakness sucks, for sure, but its only other weakness is Psychic (as was brought up in regards to its lackluster Teratype, it's a type that doesn't see a terribly huge amount of usage, albeit a lot of ubers have it). Meanwhile, it gets 5 resistances...... not the best ones, granted, but very few other types can boast such sheer numbers, and at least one of them is an exceptionally valuable Fighting resist, not to mention a Toxic immunity. Overall, seems like it makes up for that glaring Earthquake weakness quite well.
