- This is one of the all-time great classic NFL games, and a classic rivalry game between the Cowboys and Redskins on September 5, 1983.
This Monday Night Football opener rates up there with the 1999 Dallas at Washington opener and others when it comes to Dallas Cowboys comeback games. At this time, Redskins were the defending Super Bowl Champs. The Cowboys had won every opening game from 1965-1981 Although they did lose the 1982 opener the previous year, it looked as if they were going to lose another here in 1983.
The Cowboys looked bad. They had one reception in the first half. They had one great play with a Tony Dorsett 77 yard run as this is more well-known for the Redskins Darryl Green catching up to Dorsett and making the tackle. It was 23-3 Redskins at the half. Even Frank Gifford said Landry has problems, and Howard Cosell said the team is in disarray. Fans started yelling, "we want Dallas, we want Dallas". Well, they got Dallas, but not as they had hoped.
The two half's were like two completely different games, with the opposing team not showing up to play. In the 3rd quarter, QB Danny White connected with WR Tony Hill immediately for a 76 yard TD pass, then a short time later another TD for 51 yards. At that time, Frank Gifford says "the Redskins are starting to get nervous" By 2:25 left in the game, Dallas was ahead 31-23.
Final result: Dallas 31 Washington 30.

For the record, the Cowboys started the season 7-0 and were eliminated in the playoffs and the Redskins did return to the Super Bowl but lost to the Raiders.

I remember watching this in the 8th grade! I was on a high all week with this comeback against the most hated rivals. Truly a great victory in cowboys history. I miss these good old days of great football. Danny White deserves more credit as an incredible athlete and leader replacing Staubach.

We really needed to and should have won one of those games. Had we made it to the SB I've no doubt we would have won. An appearance and win in a SB would have changed things a lot for those guys who haven't gotten the recognition they deserved because they didn't.
I was watching it too, and I was just a couple of years older than you! I think this was Labor Day, so the first day of school for me was the next day.
Although we came up short 80-83 it’s my favorite era of the Cowboys. I loved the rivalries then. Tony Hill never got the credit he should have.
Tony Hill was better than Drew Pearson yet he is never spoken of remembered in cowboys circles and the team never honored him

@@paleo704 Tony Hill was an excellent receiver overall. But he didn't come up big in urgent situations as often as 88 did. Except, of course, the last play of the REDSKINS game to close out the 1979 season. I miss all those guys. Even Butch Johnson and Golden Richards! Cowboys forever, baby

No doubt. In an era where running on 1st and 2nd downs was common place. If a qb threw 30 times in a game it was bcoz the team was down big in the second half.
If it took a long time for Drew Pearson it will take even longer for Tony Hill
None of the great cowboys from this era get recognized. Danny White. Tony Hill. Doug Cosbie. Everson Walls. All are forgotten and never spoken of

I'll never forget this game, I was in 7th grade, staying up late to watch with my dad! Danny White was amazing, as was Tony Hill. And credit the D for basically pitching a second-half shutout (minus that garbage time TD). And young Billy Bates, FA rookie, bringing the energy in his first-ever game! Thanks for putting this up!

Yes they looked really bad that first half. The worst I had seen.
Danny White is one horse collar tackle away from being a hero. Perfectly legal at the time. And good tackle. Brought Dallas back for a huge win against Atlanta. Deserves a lot of appreciation. Instead of criticism.
I remember being at my friends house playing basketball with the neighborhood friends that afternoon. Then all of a sudden his dad told my friend that it’s time to go inside for dinner because the Cowboys and Redskins are playing tonight. I was 8 years old, I didn’t watch the game but I do remember everyone’s rush to get settled in to watch it.
Everyting about game back then was a million times better than todays sorry version of NFL. From announcers to background music.... priceless.
The NFL has seen way better days and so has the fans.
I hate to even hear them called professionals. It’s a shadow of what it once was. I loved the 80’s 90’s and into the 2000’s for a bit. But it just became crap.

Note Dallas’s #40 defender on the last Ratskin score. That was rookie free agent Bill Bates, who played for 15 seasons and saw all the great, the bad and the ugly during that time.

Amazingly the 2 teams were tied for first at 12-2 going into their second meeting in week 15.
I bet you didn’t feel the same later in Week 15 when they faced off at Dallas.

I remember watching this game ad a teen. I was so mad at half time. By game's end, I was ecstatic. I proudly held out my undeveloped, tiny chest at school the next day. What a turnaround.
This game is a top 3 of all time (in my opinion) in this series [for all Cowboy fans] as Dallas made all the adjustments at half to nab a “W” in RFK stadium via ABC’s Monday Night Football matchup to open the season.

I'm a Skin's fan and this was a heartbreaking loss. Joe Gibbs is by far one of the best ever. If I had one problem with him is he kinda sat on leads.

My favorite Dallas Cowboys regular season victory of all time when they were my favorite NFL team. The day Jerry Jones fired Jimmy Johnson that was it for me. Tried to hold on, but I couldn't support that level of stupidity...

You mean Landry? THAT was when the Cowboys lost me. I was a Colt fan that switched to the Cowboys during the White-Dorsett era, after the Colts rolled out in the middle of the night. I’m from Md & the Skins fans were too much(lots were fairweather Colts fans that switched when Bal sucked & Wash was winning). I gained Dallas because they were the Wash nemesis-then Jones fired the great Landry. I felt it was disrespectful after all Tom did, so I dumped em. I’m back to Bal with the Ravens now, but if I have a second fav it’s probably Dallas, even though Jerry Jones is still there. Those classic games were the best though-especially those Cowboys/ Redskins games. Great times. I miss em…

My 1st game ever as a kid. Danny White and the cowboy beat Brian Sipe and the Cleveland Browns. The stadium 🏟 looked so huge as a young kid. Been a cowboy fan ever since.

We started off the season 9-0 that year. Hearing Kallas narrate this is sad. He was the best ever. No one has come close.
Started off 7-0, had a 40-38 loss to the Raiders in game #8.
Dec.11,1983 Redskins 31, Cowboys 10..Revenge. Also the night this segment aired on ESPN was Oct.19,1987 and the Replacement Skins beat the Cowboys at Texas Stadium. Some great days for all NFL fans. #HTTR

Way way back, in 1966, I saw the Cowboys win another 31-30 thriller over the Redskins at D. C. Stadium.
In that game, the Cowboys raced out to 21-6 lead early in the 3rd quarter as Don Meredith threw 2 long bombs to Bob Hayes. The first was about 55 yards right before half time while the second was 95 yards that set a Cowboys record for longest passing TD in Cowboys history. The Cowboys won it on a short field goal by Danny Villanueva with about 5 seconds left. By the beginning of the '67 season I became an ardent Cowboys fan & would be until Jerry Jones fired Jimmy Johnson in March, 1994. Smooth move Jerry.
Then they lost the rematch at the Cotton Bowl 34-31

I remember coming home to see this game after coming from carnival on Eastern Pkwy in Brooklyn. I used to love those Monday night games. Tuesday was always the start of the school season in NY. I was only 11 years but I knew that I loved the Dallas Cowboys
I remember watching this game until halftime when I had to go to bed. I was bummed out and had to go to school the next day. My Mom woke me up in the morning with the good news that the Cowboys came back and won the game 31-30 and being down 23-3!

I also went to bed at halftime that night depressed that the Skins were beating the pants off of the Cowboys. I was getting dressed for school the next morning for school and the heard the final score on the morning radio show. I was shocked. I wasn't able to see any highlights of the 2nd half until "Inside the NFL" (hosted by Len Dawson and Nick Bouniconti) came on later that week.
1983 was the last great season Dallas had in the 80's. Dallas and Washington both started the season at 12-2. There was a big matchup in Dallas for in week 15. Dallas would have clinched the NFC East and probably had home field in the playoff that season with a victory. The Redskins blew them out in the 2nd half and ultimately advanced to the SB (where they were destroyed by the Raiders 38-9). The Cowboys only had one more playoff appearance (1985) and 2 winning seasons (1984-1985) for the rest of the decade.

I was driving from Fairbanks to Chicken Alaska. My radio reception was terrible but I crested hills and heard pieces of the game. Finally the radio was working again, it was close to the end and Dallas had the ball. I pulled over and listened to the cowboys finish on top. What a game!

The 2nd meeting between these 2 teams that year was probably the biggest NFL Regular season game of that decade and possibly of all time. Probably the height of that rivalry.

Washington started and finished their otherwise incredible 1983 season with losses. The last of which was that 38-9 annihilation by the Raiders in the Super Bowl. A lot of people lost a lot of money betting heavy hoping for back to back championship from Washington.
Even Coach Gibbs said that Redskins team was better than the previous one a year prior that beat Miami, but not on that day against the Raiders.
What a wild and crazy game. Remember it well.

I have never seen or heard of a jersey being such a "jinx" as I have with Dallas's.
In 1982, the Cowboys won 3 games when they played in the dark blue jerseys and all 3 were DECISIVE. Among the wins was a 24-10 victory over the Redskins that would prove to be the Redskins' only loss of the season.
In 1983, the Cowboys were 4-1 with the only loss the gut-wrenching 24-23 loss to the Chargers when/where Rafael Septien's missed extra point was the difference.

Hill’s departure has always been a mystery. The team said he was “out of shape” and cut him in camp in 1987 and he never played again.
I went to bed at halftime with the Cowboys down 23 to 3. I woke up the next morning & turned on the TV. The first thing I heard was that the Dallas Cowboys came back from a 20-point halftime deficit to beat Washington 31 to 30 & i couldn't have been happier since I was a big Cowboys fan.
Dallas won this game. But in Week 15 at Dallas, tied with the Redskins at 12-2, the Cowboys self destructed after that famous “No Danny No” play when Danny White snapped the ball on a 4th and Inches situation when the Cowboys were really trying to draw the Redskins off sides.
I love Joe Gibbs, one of the best ever to coach the game. To me if he had one knock it was he say on a lead. I remember this game well.

Tony Hill. Not even close. Harper proved he was a benefit of teams focusing on Irvin. Harper def had that big game threat no doubt. However he showed his true colors when he left for big money to go to Tampa. He embarrassed himself. He was awful. He was lazy and realized without defenses keying on the other WR, he was done. He actually did nothing on TB. He got caught with drugs etc. So Tony Hill is soooo much better career wise than Alvin Harper. Now to be fair, I'm grateful for Harper for those SB winning teams. He was the perfect offset WR in our Offense during that run.

I watched every minute of this game, and I also recall the Cowboys starting off 7-0 with 7 comebacks in '83.
I recall a ridiculously poor draft that year: We only picked up Jim Jeffcoat and then Bill Bates in Free Agency.
And this was an "old school" season as the 'Cards were still in St. Louis.
Lastly, I also recall losing to the lame Lambs, I mean Rams, in the freakin' wild card round?!?
It was an ugly end to what had been a good season. Three brutal losses in a row.
This was the last Dallas team that had a shot of making some noise in the Landry era.

I Heard That When The Dallas Cowboys Came to Play The Washington Redskins In Washington, That Game was Super Bowl.
I watched that game, one of many Cowboys games in the early 80s that were just absolutely incredibly exciting to watch. Especially in 83 when they had to come back in the 2nd half from being down by double digits in a lot of those games.
It fell apart for them in the final 2 weeks of the season as they would be defeated by the Deadskins and the FortyWiners who throttle Dallas in this games, Washington in the 2nd half of their match up on Dallas.
83 was their last legitimate Super Bowl contending team under Tom Landry. They would ride through the rest of the 80s on a slowly steady sinking ship.
I'll go into depth in my next post about why and how Darrell Green caught Tony Dorsett from behind...... and there is a reason other than the fact that Green was indeed faster than Dorsett. But there's another few factors that tie into why it happened

Danny White was a great QB (and also a good punter) imo. Too bad he couldn't win one of the three Championship games. The one against the 49ers where Pearson was tackled by the neck of the shirt on his way to a game-winning TD was truly agonizing for all Cowboys fans.

They were getting old in too many key positions by then. I hated it.
I remember this game; I was so ticked that I almost turned it off at half. Once White threw those two TD passes to Hill, I felt real good about their chances.
One of my favorites, especially beating the Redskins in RFK. Yes, Dallas looked terrible in the first half, and that is a understatement.
I remember it, too. My dad had a coworker who hated Dallas and loved to rag on Dad when they lost. When Dad came home from work the next day, he told us that the coworker had watched till halftime, figured Dallas was done for, and gone to bed. The next day, he came up to Dad and smirked, "What happened to your Cowboys last night?" Dad nonchalantly replied, "Oh they won." "WHAT!?!?" It was SO satisfying!
I think this was the game where Howard Cosell was criticized for calling Alvin Garrett a little monkey and it was his last season announcing for MNF.
Yes that is correct and he did apologize. This very same night he also addressed about the Russians shooting down Korean Air Lines Flight 007 which happened 4 days prior. I wish I could post the game, but it is being blocked. It was a great game.
I was today's year old when I learned there was no 2 point conversions until 1994. Here I am thinking 'why does the commentator seem to be treating a potentially game tying TD like it doesn't matter at all?'

Danny had some great comeback games, many featured here on this channel: The January 1981 Atlanta game, the 1981 Miami game, this one of course (my favorite) and the 1984 Saints game.
what is amazing to me and so shocking is that the redskins who were the defending super bowl champions home on a monday night who had a 20 point lead at halftime choked and blew the game. i thought for sure after this that the redskns were done the rest of the season because of the demoralizing loss to cowboys. how it didnt affect them after this game is beyond me
I see it on the opposite side, which is the same result, was that how bad Dallas was in that first half (as I described in the description) and still won. I have the game to post, but YT is blocking it. It's a great game !

Dallas was on its way down during this season, by the late 1980's they would be a laughing stock. All of the great players that they had were aging and no longer dominate like they had been in years past; it was basically the end of an era until Jimmy Johnson came along and acquired new young talent.
They were so good for so long means they were the next to last in the draft so they didn't get the best players in the 80s

Redskins lost only two games that year....31-30....and 48-47 on Monday night again....wow.....went to Super Bowl but lost badly to the Raiders

I wouldn't say he's my favorite QB. But, I do feel he is grossly underrated/unappreciated. He gets a lot of blame for the the 3 straight NFC title losses on the road from 1980-1982. The above video does a good job putting those defeats in proper perspective. Staubach had major advantage over Danny White in playoff games and it had nothing to do with their individual talent. You can't help but come away a different view on his playoff failure and his career in general.

Danny White 11 was good QB out of ARIZONA STATE with AGEING DEFENSE LINE but THURMANS THIEFS in the secondary where GREAT. Joe Theismann and 44 J. RIGGINS was always great games, but the Team of 1970s slowly 1980s Joe Montana QB and Joe Theismann had BETTER TEAMS. After 1985 🇺🇸 TEAM FELL ON HARD TIMES.
