Volkswagen Golf Mk8 2020 1.5 eTSI Mild Hybrid - Revolution Inside (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Volkswagen Golf Mk8 2020 at first glance looks almost identical to the Mk7 Golf. In its more than 45-year history Volkswagen Golf has often left car journalists and customers scratching their heads, while looking for differences in what was supposed to be a new model. In case of the Golf it’s relatively easy to tell Mk2 from Mk3, but Mk3 and Mk4 or Mk4 and Mk5 are quite a bit more similar. This is what we call an evolution, not a revolution.
    In case of the Mk7 and Mk8 Golfs it’s also hard to tell the difference, because the cars are almost identical in size. The new Volkswagen Golf is 3 cm longer, it has a more falling roofline in the back and, what’s of paramount importance, the front is flatter, and slightly lower. These changes, among others, have led to improving the drag coefficient from 0.3 to 0.275. Better aerodynamic properties mean better fuel economy.
    Look closer, and you’ll spot new IQ lights in the front and in the back, new Volkswagen logo, and a new model badge running across the tailgate. That’s pretty much it. This is a Golf.
    The most important changes are visible from behind the wheel. No more analogue instruments. Now all VW Golfs get a digital display, albeit in some markets the base model display is not configurable.
    Starting price: 25 600 euro
    As tested: 40 000 euro

      Yes. Every driver of cars does. I guess they have decided it's "ugly"; so it doesn't look as good in showrooms and commercials.

    • @shroomyesc
      @shroomyesc Před 4 lety +5

      @@kimmern999 I think it's more about the cost saving. When you have loads of buttons you have to produce or commission all the individual components from subcontractors. It's not that expensive, but with the amount of cars produced it's somewhere where they can make cost cuts to use touch surfaces instead where they only need to worry about software. This can also be marketed as "innovative" and "futuristic" in marketing material, it's a win win for the manufacturer.

    Great pragmatic balance of narrative and demonstration without the ever present ego of some of your peer reviewers getting in the way. My Golf 8 eTSI 150 is brilliant. Got it today and it knocks the socks off the MK7, which is still in the drive awaiting the auction house to take it away. Biggest plus is the power which alongside the auto gearbox and tech makes this car shine through. Oh... Must mention the wheels and tyres, which are bigger and provide more traction and the 17's are so much nicer! I have colour keyed wheels to body which I think adds to the wonderful looks. Always a pleasure watching your reviews, something I don't think I can say about any other channel.
    The car, however, seem to me like a step back; this new gen. 8 looks nothing like the beautiful gen. 7, the instrument cluster seem to be surrounded by cheap plastic, some cheaper variants get the less advanced rear suspension (something you didn't mention) - although the new A-class does the same - and the virtual cockpit looked more high-tech before!

If it is not acceptable, my only alternative would be Corolla Hybrid 1.8. The thing is, I always wanted car from VW Group. I like diesel cars, I had Fiat Marea 1.9JTD and Bravo 1.6 MJET, both of which performed superbly when it comes to motor strength and consumption. I even ordered new Skoda Karoq 2.0 Tdi in August, but they shut down the factories so the deal is most probably off for the foreseeable future.

    Great and honest review, unlike most journalists who hype everything in the new Golf. Out of curiosity, considering the test car had a DCC suspension, would you consider the car better over bumps than the 7.5 in comfort mode also with DCC? Also is it more silent in highway (e.g.130km/h) than the 7.5? These two might be my deciding factors in buying it.

    Not a huge fan of new headlights, but I would probably get used to them. But the interior is a disaster for my taste. Huge amount of piano plastic with no buttons. I drove Audi A6 (C6) for many years and the location of center vents taught me quickly how to drive using left hand only. Now the same crap on Golf, very bad UX. The increase of the price of G8 vs G7.5 is significant, I guess lot of it comes from the (unneeded) mild hybrid, which you cannot opt out if you want DSG. Really sad, as the engine and suspension seem to be very good in general and I actually was waiting for G8 to buy it. Luckily, Covid-19 cancelled all car-buying plans… Thanks for the video.
