Why Remain Catholic? (With So Much Scandal)

  • Friends, in light of the recent scandals, I know many people are wondering whether they should remain in the Catholic Church. And I totally get that; the outrage is warranted. But in this time of crisis, I beg you not to flee, but to fight--not violently, with the weapons of the world, but with the weapons of the Spirit. We need you.

    I’ve been a victim of abuse by a catholic priest almost 20 years ago but will never leave the Church left behind by Christ. If I did I would be giving the devil his satisfaction. That is what he wants us to do. I’ve learned to forgive and know that no one is perfect and would not idolize any priest. They are human just like me and are bound to fall. I pray for all the victims to find healing.

      joyce Nderi - I honour your ability to speak-out. I hope that hearing "someone" apologise to you for what happened, will help you. Ideally we want the abusers to grow-a-back-bone" and make their own profound apologies - but that may never happen for some - so I say to you now - My profound apologies for what you have endured - may you find love and peace in your life from now forward. It is so difficult to speak out and even more difficult to forgive - with forgiveness there eventually will come a sense of relief and peace. By holding on to the memories and re-enacting in your mind the sights/sounds/feelings of shame and pain only makes you suffer over and over. Letting-go releases you, and so, let God deal with the abuser in the Good Lord's own time.

      We are Not Unarmed in this war ! WE are the Church Militant and God Almighty has given us a most powerful array of Weapons with which we can defeat the Enemy. The Most powerful is the Holy Eucharist, received in humility, after a true and complete confession that grants us Absolution so that we never offend the God who loves us. The next awesome weapon from God is that given through HIS Holy Mother to Saint Dominic, the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, she tells us to pray that everyday. The next is the membership in the one true church that helps our prayers be more pleasing and heard by God who is our defender, our companion in battle, and our savior. This vile world trys to convince us that prayer is worthless, just as "Lord Haw Haw" and "Tokyo Rose" once tried to make traitors amongst us. Men in clerical garb are workers in the vineyard, but the fruit we are comes from the Vine, that is Christ Himself, not from the pathetic few laborers who fail to do their job.

Studying the Word helped me to establish a relationship with God....to know him and to feel His presence. Going to church each Sunday will not do that. Im telling you the truth. Dont worry about going anywhere yet. First read your Bible...then ask God to help you find a place. Jesus had no intention of setting up any kind of organized religion or church. This is completely and absolutely man-made thing which all down through the centuries has mislead mankind. This was tacked on. added in the 3rd century by the Council of Nicea who added the virgin birth, Jesus being "God", having to be "saved" and more and more and more nonsense. Here is a religion where the priests are gay to start with, having had to swear no sex with women which I am quite sure they never had any interest in in the first place. Non sequitur. There are many Catholic denominations - the key issue is: does a 'denomination' follow Scripture or deviate from Scripture?
      Matthew 16:18 affirms Peter's faith claim as the Rock (Jesus is the Rock), not that Peter is the Rock. A few verses down Peter is called Satan by Jesus as Peter waivers in his faith (a common theme with Peter).

    3. Clarify penalties for reporting failures (that means simply transferring priest to other locales so that they can continue to abuse becomes illegal and punishable; it's aiding and abetting)
    4. Reform laws on confidentiality agreements.
    There are Catholic entities that have historically and heavily LOBBIED for current sex abuse laws to remain unchanged, because those laws in fact favor the church as a billion dollar institution and protect its PR image.

      matrixlone As Catholics, we know Jesus is truly present in the Holy Eucharist. If we leave we will not receive Him outside the church. None Catholics do not believe this so they see no reason to become catholic. I converted to the catholic faith 13 years ago from different Protestant denominations. I would never leave the Catholic Church. My faith does not depend on sinful men, but on the real presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

    I loved my Catholic upbringing. Sad to learn how corrupt Rome is. How perhaps Constantine was not truly converted, but used his sign to corral power. I am truly devastated upon learning this evil corruption disguised as "good". I believe in good forces. Unfortunately for me Fatima has become reality. How sad.

      @Dismythed Před 6 lety

      You cannot. Neither the Pope nor the priesthood has taken any active steps to rid the RCC of this. All they have to do is let priests marry and take active measures to kick out the wrongdoing priests, but do they do that? No.. But they are sitting back and hoping it just goes away. But with only 5 diocese having revealed thousands of pedophile priests since 1995, and many more victims, how many more pedophile priests are there in the world when there are thousands of dioceses? Meanwile, the Pope and the priesthood sit on their hands.

    Bishop Baron thank for the words of wisdom and clarity. It is very challenging for us to separate our church from our Catholic structure and the priests who we entrust with guiding and nurturing us. Without meaningful change, I’m afraid we will lose many who are faithful but not able to see an end to these horrible actions. Praying that we see actions that lead to hope, and confidence that we are in charge.

    This is not a crisis. This abuse has been going on for a very, very long time. This problem has always existed. The vatican and local church staff ignored it and many, many times threatened people who wanted to report it to the police. The fact that they simply moved priests to other parishes shows their lack of concern for those affected. The people affected have been traumatized. The abuse affects them for the rest of their lives! Doesnt anyone care about these defenseless boys & girls? Who is going to stand up for them. These men in religious clothes enjoy the power they have over people and use it to take advantage of them. These are mere men! Dont put them on a holy petestal. They are just plain men. Get that thru your head people. Many dont speak up bwcause they consider these men as next to God.

    Dear Bishop Barron: Why do we say that this is a problem of a few priests of bishops rather than a problem of the Church as an institution? The fact is, as the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report as well as the investigative reporting of the Boston Globe that was highlighted in Spotlight, that these sexual abuse issues are at their worst a criminal conspiracy on the part of the leadership of the Church who knew of crimes committed by the men who are supposed to lead their flocks in the love of Christ have engaged in widespread cover-ups of these crimes for years. It is time for the Church leadership to come clean, put the lay people in a decision-making position and make sure that the priests and bishops who have engaged in this heinous behavior are held to account in the civil criminal courts for the crimes they have committed.

      +Kenneth Thanks for clarifying. It's important to me that people don't imagine it's a problem only in one place. It's universal. Wishing you the best. This is a tragic time for people who want to belong to their spiritual community and feel they have nowhere to turn. I would be so devastated - I'm devastated as a bystander who has enjoyed Catholic mass many times because it's beautiful, rich, and meaningful to me. There is so much goodness in the Catholic approach and I shouldn't feel uncomfortable in a space that feeds my soul. Nobody should.

    • @kennethduckworth7111
      @kennethduckworth7111 Před 5 lety

      Agree, but I think it’s time for the Church as an institution to rio off the band aid, come clean about the extent of its duplicity in these coverups, defrock the guilty and submit them to criminal prosecution by the civil authorities and then we can talk repentance. Very appropriate as our Jewish brothers and sisters approach Yom Kippur.- the Day of Atonement.

    Bishop Barron Who is our Lincoln? Who speaks with righteous anger against the cloistered leaders who will not speak of it? I wonder what Jesus would do if He came to the Vatican and saw the illicit behaviors and actors who wear the priestly vestments in His Holy Church. Would He chase them out as He did the money changers in the Temple or would He cry and pray for God's Mercy on them without doing anything? Where is our Moses to lead us? Lord lead us to the Rock which is higher than us.
    I fear nothing will change unless the United States Government bring racketeering charges against the bishops and cardinals who were in charge of this criminal enterprise and then the scandal will get uglier.

    I've listened to this video for a second and third time. I have great respect for Bishop Barron, which is reflected in my numerous previous positive comments. I hope the good Bishop thinks through his comments about those individuals that walk away from the Church are abandoning abuse victims. If we learned about an abuse case that occurred over the last ten years, after the perpetrator had made apologies and promises to reform, but in fact systematically doubled down in the harm inflicted, yet chastised individuals that separated themselves from the perpetrator, arguing they're abandoning the victim(s).... that could be seen as emotional manipulation. Please be careful with that line of reasoning. To be clear, I don't believe that's the Bishops intention, rather he's trying to stop the Church from bleeding. Again, I'm asking the Bishop to be careful using an abandonment argument, and recall the actual parties that performed harmful acts and abandonment. Jesus is Lord. Pray without ceasing.
