My late grandfather was there in the European theater. He landed in Normandy, moved through France, and with Patton's tank battalion, fought in the battle of the bulge. He was one of the reasons why I chose to serve in the military as well. My wife is still serving to this day.
I love these clips! My grandfather landed in Normandy on d day and fought in many battles including the battle of the bulge. These clips bring a tear to me eye.
These are stark reminders of the bravery that encompassed many but fled in a instant. Thank you for your grandfather and so many like him. Did he make it home after the war?
My father a purple heart recipient, wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. His war time experiences shaped his life. He was happily married for forty years, raised three children i'm one of them.He Passed away at the ripe old age of eighty six. God bless the woman and men of the greatest generation.
The average GI was about 20, from a small town and had never traveled more than 100 miles from home, until he went to war. He went off as a kid and returned an old man. One man I knew personally, after serving in Europe for over three years, stepped of the train in his small GA town, located the only taxi stand, who took him to the family farm at no cost. He knocked on the door, his daddy "made a light," lit a lantern, opened the door to find his son standing there. The wife of my friend had moved in with his family; she heard the commotion and ran downstairs and into his arms. After an hour or so, they all went to bed. He slept in the room with his younger brother. His wife with her sister in law. The next day, after a hearty breakfast, he hitched the mule up and turned the north field, after first feeding the cows. After all, it was time to plant and those cows needed feeding. One must make hay while the sun shines.
Regarding the man who I mentioned in the previous comment, I have asked him, as well as other World War II men, how long they had been over there, whether European or Pacific theater. Practically to a man, they all knew the exact number of years, months and down to the days. This particular man, plus another man who fought in the Pacific Theatre were offered a chance to go back to Normandy for the 40th anniversary celebration or to visit Guadalcanal and Japan, for the man who fought in the Pacific Theatre. They could bring their wife or another family member, all expenses paid. They both turned it down. I think I know the reason why. If they could not talk about it 40 years later without crying what would they do if they were back standing on the same beach where they saw other men being blown in half? Five of these old men, all D-Day veterans, attended the movie Saving Private Ryan. There's a scene or two in the movie where after the front of the Higgins boat goes down the Germans opened up with machine guns and mowed the men down before they even had a chance to step off the ramp. There's another scene where a German 88 mm shell hits a Higgins boat and blows it up. Quoting my friend Mr. Kaiser, "The Germans had those 88 mm cannons zeroed in on the beach so tight they could drop a round in a helmet. All I could do is dig as deep as I could without striking water and pray, 'oh God get me out of here."' During the most graphic scenes, and others, two of my friends had to leave the theater and go into the men's room to weep. Keep in mind these scenes are reenactments of actual scenes and events that went on that day. When it showed a man being blown to pieces and thrown through the air, that kind of stuff really happened. Some of the bravest of the men were combat photographers, risking their life. In a span of a few hours, the film was back at the ships, being developed and screened by the brass. They had to know what was going wrong and what was going right. They had planned to release some of the film to the public as a morale booster. When the brass saw the film, they immediately ordered it to be thrown overboard. "If the mothers and fathers see what is happening to their boys, they will demand we give the Germans anything they want to end this war." Whether or not any of it was kept and is stored away in some vault somewhere, who knows? What we see in old movies and on the news reels of the day is a very sanitized version. There is a scene in the movie that shows a soldier walking on the beach, disoriented and in shock, with a blown off arm tucked under his other arm. One of my friends swears he saw that man. If you want a good book about the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima, I strongly recommend Flags of Our Fathers. It is an account written by the son of one of the men in the famous photo. He follows lives of every man in the photo and what happened to them. Some wanted to take advantage of the notoriety, whereas his daddy refused to talk about it.

Yes but remember they fought an evil most couldn't fathom. Sadly that same evil is alive and well in 2023/2024. It's only going to get worse. At least they defeated the evil of their time and got some peace restored for a brief time. I'm thankful everyday for the Greatest Generation and all veterans of wars of the recent past. If they hadn't fought the wars of yesterday I probably wouldn't be here now. Now we have to rise up against a new evil in our time. Sadly before you could recognize that evil and the ones who wanted to do you harm, present day it could very well be your neighbor smiling in your face that will later that night break in your house and kill you for whatever you have that they want. Or for those in school it could be someone you thought was a friend that you've seen day after day grade after grade, they might come in with whatever guns they can get and shoot all they can. The world has gone crazy!
@@matthewwilkes6815 the world has gone crazy and yes, I do understand that we owe those men a great debt, but they still arent the "greatest generation" simply because each generation faces different oppositions. Is am a student of PG history, I cannot explain how heartwarming these photos are. A mirror of horrific, destructive yet courageous times. Men went to war knowing they won't make it back home but they went and that's heroic. Whenever I reach this part of history while studying my eyes mostly stay wet and something they just pour. Reading about all those tragic events at the eastern front, at the western front, in Africa, in Asia and in the Pacific. I really wish to see all this. I want to see those young men in their late teens and young 20s fighting I want to see those night witches I want to see the beach landings I want to see everyone and everything. I can keep on writing................
The futility of war. These photos are extremely emotion provoking. Thank goodness I never had to suffer this and I hope one day we can prevent this insanity.

Lol you are pretty naive aren’t you. Its the wars that brings inventions and moves us forward if it had not been for all the wars throughout history we probably still be living in caves. Sad but true
Actually, mankind developed their skills on mechanical fields and other electric devices. Eventhough the wars are tragic, we humans have developed massively due to the wars.
Sad that all those people died for the world to be in a shit state. I'm sure my great grandfather would of had seconds thoughts on going to war and dying for the world we have now!
I hear you brother but they fought for their brothers to the left and right of them. My great Grandfather landed on Normandy and I know that he fought and bled because his brothers did the same
I make a promise today..to show these videos to my young daughters...I will tell them what these brave men did...so my girls generations could be free..To think these men cared about us...before we were born....Lets all reading these comments make a promise to share with the young people in our lives...Thankyou
@thehistoryexplorer She definitely had classic PTSD but resilience is the most important trait in living with PTSD. She had resilience in spades. It wasn't until I grew up & got over myself that I recognized & appreciated all that she went through, even losing relatives in concentration camps. She lived to be 97 to spite everyone.
Hard times create Strong Men - Strong men create good times - you no the rest... These clips are absolutely fantastic mate....never forget these heroes.
I don’t know how and why but every time I watch these pictures Im engulfed by the bravery and fear of everyone living, fighting and dying in these era.
I live in Normandy and each of these videos gives me the shivers because every time I see the name of a town I know and can go to. Thank you to all these soldiers for their courage and sacrifice ! 🙏
A lot of people don’t know their history on how men like us fought and died for our freedom and changed the world as we now know today but this song fits perfectly and don’t change it
Sadly the younger generations have forgotten the fallen heros. No matter what country they come from. Lest we forget 😢this message should be told to them 😢😢
What's sad is, there will be generations that won't know what happened or won't even care.
Hopefully videos like this can be shared with them.

Our Heroes. We owe them everything..we shall never ever forget!!!!
The greatest most courageous generation of all. They deserve our appreciation and deep respect.
Isso me emociona demais, quanto sofrimento passou por aí!!!!
Thank you!

You are doing a really good job.... Greetings from Poland…..🍻🙋🏻♂️
Sad that all those people died for the world to be in a shit state. I'm sure my great grandfather would of had seconds thoughts on going to war and dying for the world we have now!
I hear you brother but they fought for their brothers to the left and right of them.
My great Grandfather landed on Normandy and I know that he fought and bled because his brothers did the same
@@legolas182735 I know it was the right thing to do at the time.
Wow what a comment, thank you. 🙏

I make a promise today..to show these videos to my young daughters...I will tell them what these brave men did...so my girls generations could be free..To think these men cared about us...before we were born....Lets all reading these comments make a promise to share with the young people in our lives...Thankyou
My little momma was from Aachen & they fled to Belgium as 90% of her hometown was bombed out. She was one of the most resilient people I knew.
Yes Aachen was badly damaged with some very severe fighting
@thehistoryexplorer She definitely had classic PTSD but resilience is the most important trait in living with PTSD. She had resilience in spades. It wasn't until I grew up & got over myself that I recognized & appreciated all that she went through, even losing relatives in concentration camps. She lived to be 97 to spite everyone.
We need to salute these brave men for their service and sacrifice ❤️🙏
I just love these before and after. It gives me a visual of how it really was in war time. Thank you. Don’t stop showing them.
Hard times create Strong Men - Strong men create good times - you no the rest...

A lot of people don’t know their history on how men like us fought and died for our freedom and changed the world as we now know today but this song fits perfectly and don’t change it
Обожаю смотреть эти короткие ролике , всей душой ощущаю эту разницу между войной и миром и осознаю какого было тем людям ...
Sadly the younger generations have forgotten the fallen heros. No matter what country they come from. Lest we forget 😢this message should be told to them 😢😢
