Oh Erica don’t let it get you down it’s a garden and it’s meant to be fun and harvesting is just a bonus. You have accomplished loads and juggling work, kids and allotments (and Lloyd 😂😂) my hats off to you. I find it refreshing that most CZcams gardeners I watch don’t fluff through perfection because we all can’t be Mr CD 😉. Look forward to seeing your updates always ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe

It's disappointing when we have failures Erica but don't let it get you down. There's always next year and hopefully you will get a good crop next year if you grow them again once you figure out what went wrong.

All my earlies grew well and harvested well but when I harvested the Picasso and Desiree the majority went black possibly with some type of fungus in storage but there were some of the Picasso and Desiree that I managed to eat before they went black.

Hi Erica, I feel your disappointment too, my potatoes were not good this Year too. I think everyone across the Country have had a difficult growing season, all with different plants too. Very strange weather this Year and hope we all get a better season in 2022. Take care 🙂

    Hello Erica
my potatoes in buckets were not a success either. Too wet.
I appreciate the fact that you show us the plot even though is is not tidy. Because that is the reality, sometimes life get in the way.
    Take care Joyce 💚👩🏻‍🌾🍀

Don't worry, Erica, life just gets in the way sometimes. Your next video sounds great too. I'm gutted for you about the potatoes, I have heard a few moans and groans about their peat-free. Some people were pulling out large bits of wood etc. What an amazing bean harvest though!! Awesome. Take care, hope you have a good week

I put only two potatoes in a 5 gallon container three in a ten and four potatoes in a 15 gallon tote or container so they have enough room to grow. I also add compost over them.

I will be pulling my Sal Palermo plants in a few weeks. I will update how they did, as still loads of green leaves. I think your right as to compost. I mix 50% garden soil to help prevent poor crops. Potatoes love older soil that's fed, over neat compost.

Thank you for showing that even people who know what they are doing are having bad harvests. MORE important for me is knowing it’s not too late to harvest my spuds. And having a better idea of how to do those buckets.

  • @smithy4121
    @smithy4121 Před 2 lety +1

Hi Erica some of my potatoes did really poorly too. I got different compost from different places and some of it seems to have been far too woody and wouldn't hold water. When I harvested it had been raining and some were really wet but some were bone dry despite the rain. Those ones also had no worms in just woodlice. The wet ones had way less woodlice in and lots of worms. Hopefully we'll do better next year.

I laughed when I saw the carrot. I didn't expect that. It has been an awful year for me too. The constant week after weeks of rain and the hurricane destroyed a lot of my plants by severe wind damage or flooding and killing the roots.

Hi Erica. Sorry to depress you further but a bumper season for spuds this year in the east of England. Planted direct in the ground under thick mulch of compost I think we got the rain here just a the right time. Lovely crop of Arron pilot beautiful first early. Tastes as good if not better than Jersey Royals (international kidney which by the way were the only verity on the allotments here to get blighted) Heavy crop of beautiful Charlotte second early. Just lifting the last of those now! and even heaver crop of Nichola tasting as good as the Charlotte but tending to go to mush when boiled so need to watch while cooking. Good for roasting.

@@vanessawilkinson9855 Hi Vanessa I am in Suffolk between the River Deben and Orwell. We seem to have are own micro-climate due to this. I take it your Sarpo are main crop and I don't bother with main crop. Just 1st and then 2nd early which I can make last until the beginning of the year. I think the the thick mulch helped to retain the moisture this year. Resulting in a good clean crop with only a touch of scab here and there. Even on the last couple of charlottes I am now lifting.

Its been a really weird year, my beetroot, radishes, tomatoes all failed. I had good peas and runner beans, also had a good harvest of sweetcorn. The cabbage whites found some of my brassicas and even last week I found caterpillars munching at the kale. However, onwards and upwards. Thanks to your last video you've inspired me to grow garlic and onions, just waiting for a fairer day to get them in. Thanks Erica! x

Interesting about your potatoes,, I grew Setanta variety, they tasted really nice but out of four large buckets I only got about 6lb of potatoes , so I think the cool cloudy weather had a lot to do with it, I shall be growing them again next year just hope for a warmer spring and early summer. I also grew beans for drying and they did well , lots of dried beans for over winter, my problem is remembering to soak them the day before, so I may just freeze them next year. How do you treat your dried beans Erica , I would love to know ,I know Liz Zorab is quite an expert in this.

potatoes do best with fertile soil. My best results are planted in soil with well rotted farmyard manure and seaweed. I also used green manure in the winter and I also never grow in the same spot as the previous year. I think we are all struggling with shop bought compost. I don't think peat is the answer as it's quite sterile. Put your spent compost on the compost heap don't reuse.

Hiya, the green bags are for my local council green waste collection, I don't grow in them, I just use them for moving compost about or transporting veg. They last about 2 years of constant use
