Well-known for his role in Chicago blues, Sumlin performed with Howlin’ Wolf from 1955 until the singer’s death in 1976, after which he continued performing with the late blues legend’s band under the moniker The Wolf Pack and released a string of solo albums to varying degrees of success.
His playing style, characterized by sudden bursts of noise, start-stop patterns and use of sustain, was achieved without the use of a traditional guitar pick and was a formative influence on the style of The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards. His frequent use of abrasive, shattering noise also inspired rock icons like Jimi Hendrix to experiment with guitar tone.

I'm 60 years old. Fan of Rock, Jazz, bit of the dance floor king in my life during the disco, rap left me dead in the water. But as the years linger on I'm more in tune with the blues. Guess as you get older some things just never seem to last in your life but one thing... The Blues. They just linger on letting me know I'm still alive.

This is some of the finest blues guitar tone I've heard in my life!
First saw and heard Hubert Sumlin i 1972 with Howling Wolf in 1972 at the Esquire Show Bar (Montreal). Best show I’d ever seen before or since! Saw him again at a Blues joint in MTL with Pinetop Perkins at the the ‘G Sharp’ in ‘92. It was the third night of a two-night gig. Fourteen fans in a tiny blues juke-joint!! Owner Gary Sharp passing around shots of Bourbon, great night! At intermission, I told Mr. Sumlin about seeing him twenty years before, and naming every member of the band. Caught his attention! We sat on the piano bench for a few minutes, talking about the blues. A true gentleman (and chicken farmer) who played everything except what was expected of him! I will never forget Hubert Sumlin,RIP!

Hubert Sumlin is a perfect example of 'sometimes less is more', if you get my drift. No one else I can think of could say more with less like Sumlin on his guitar
