    Mine turned out to be a very rough bur on the carrier shoulder. My buffer face looked just like the photo you showed @4:24. I ran 2000 grit automotive sandpaper over the edge and got a new buffer and the problem went away.

    If you're running into the issue of the buffer retaining pin hole being out of spec, my recommendation is to pick up an Armaspec silent buffer, pull the retaining pin and spring, and carry on as usual. Just make sure you drop some CLP in your buffer tube between cleanings.
    You absolutely can run your AR without that retaining pin, even with a standard buffer and spring. Your hammer will catch the buffer when you open up your AR. The fun part is getting it back together.

    • @Anreeewww
      @Anreeewww Před 4 měsíci

      But how does Armaspec buffer resolve this problem?

    • @BuckF0eJiden
      @BuckF0eJiden Před 4 měsíci

      @@Anreeewww you don't need a retainer pin for captured buffer systems. That allows them to keep constant pressure on the BCG, and the heavier buffer weight keeps it from bouncing back out of battery.

    • @BuckF0eJiden
      @BuckF0eJiden Před 4 měsíci

      @Anreeewww removing the pin also keeps the pin from getting marred up or marring up your buffer.
      If there's no pin, it doesn't matter if the buffer retaining pin hole is in the wrong spot. 🤷‍♂️

    I had a Ruger AR-556 rifle that had both a non-flush carrier tail and a misplaced buffer detent hole! It was digging a circular ring into the buffer like no tomorrow.
    VERY disappointed in the quality of that rifle.

    That off set detent, I just got one for my .308 build, $21.00 at Galloway Precision, not sure I needed it and I certainly do not like how it sits in there, kind of tilted and it seems too short, barely catches the edge of the buffer

  • @900stx7
    @900stx7 Před 4 měsíci

    I've had the problem with the buffer face hitting the retaining pin on a Ruger MPR from the factory.
    With about 500rds it actually stopped working.
    I've changed the entire bolt carrier and buffer and it hasn't helped.
    The lower seems out of spec because the detent holes on the take down pins are drilled about 1/32" off center and the pins have to be removed with a punch and hammer.
    I need to send it back.

    I have one that is leaving the rain around the outside of the buffer and couldn't figure out why I'm glad I found this video but I've had it for right at a year so I can't send it back I was thinking about just beveling the edge of the buffer where it would not contact the pen anymore but I've also ran probably 2000 rounds through it and haven't had any issues other than leaving a ring on the buffer

    Hello, hope you're doing well. Recently purchased an fx9 secondhand, the person claimed to have only shot ten rounds and decided to sell due to being a left handed shooter (so they claim, probably lied about both). Unfortunately upon inspection after purchasing it I noticed marring on the buffer face from what I've discovered to be a bur on the bcg. This is the first buffer tube utilizing firearm I've purchased so the concepts are still new to me. I plan on hopefully sanding or polishing out the bur, but are the indents/wear on the buffer going to be an issue? Do I now need to replace the buffer? Thank you for the video, it's provided some insight.

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Well, as I explained, if the marks look like scratches and sanding, it’s not a particularly big deal. Likely a burr. Where the problem lies is if there is ding marks on the edges of the face. Consistent with the buffer face hitting the retention pin. This leaves small concave notches around the rim. If that’s the case, the lower is likely out of spec and at some point will shear the retention pin off which can be a big problem.

  • @chriswalsh9989
    @chriswalsh9989 Před 9 měsíci

    Great video man, i would like to ask if it is normal for the nitride coating to wear off the back of the bcg wear it contacts the buffer? Im seeing some wearing of the coating where its hitting the buffer weight and leaving marks on it as well. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Is there any way to fix the problem if your retaining pin is in the wrong spot? My buffer tube looks exactly like the one at @1.53. And I’ve only shot maybe 400 rounds through the rifle.

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  Před 6 měsíci +1

      You can buy a recessed detent pin. I am uncomfortable with calling it a “fix” and would usually advise to replace the lower with one that’s in spec but as I have not personally had one, I can not say with experience how it does addressing the issue. But from what I have read, it seems to resolve it. If I had an SBR I paid a stamp for, I would go this route, but for a standard lower I would expect the manufacturer to replace it.

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  Před rokem +2

      Very light etching is normal. No wear at all is pretty uncommon. But if it’s out of spec, it’ll be pretty apparent

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  Před rokem +1

      @@Allenmar73 ehh. Hard to say. But I would say that it’s more common than not to have an out of spec lower with the pilot hole drilled in the incorrect location than the shorter carrier. Especially if it’s a quality carrier as any place with good QC is gonna measure before sending them out. At least in batch. But it does happen. BCA and occasionally toolcraft being the usual suspects.

    Thank you have a custom 9mm AR from breachers customs, the issue im having is after I shoot the first round it chambers the next but give me a light primer strike. Does not fire the second round ever. I also ran into another issue with the charging handle getting stuck after that first round fires, took it apart and my buffer detent is bent and my buffer weight is not only scared but dented. I want to remove my buffer detent completely do you think this will fix my issue?

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  Před 3 měsíci

      You appear to have more than one issue. To fix the issue of the buffer getting beat up, you will need to replace the lower. It’s out of spec. Assuming, of course , you measured the bolt carrier and it exceeds 6.67” in length. Second, from the sound of it, you have an issue with the fire control group. Quite possibly a backwards hammer spring. Take the entire trigger assembly out and remove all springs. Then reassemble making sure to orient all springs (trigger, hammer, and disconnector springs) the correct way. One of them is likely off. This can cause random light hammer strikes, dead triggers, and even bust shots. As far as the charging handle getting stuck, I’m not entirely sure. I would have to take a look at what’s going on and see it for myself before I could give an opinion.

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah. It’s fine. Once it wears down to a certain degree, it won’t wear further and there’s no known case that I’m aware of after extensive research that there can be an issue with a worn buffer face. The biggest issue is the retainer pin breaking off

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  Před 3 měsíci +2

      First you need to determine what the underlying issue is based on the type of damage. Pilot hole in the lower out of spec or burr on the rear of the carrier. Or rarely, both. If it’s marring occurring above the detent and possibly some scratches on the face, it’s a burr. If there is concave damage from buffer pin strikes, around the rim , it’s an out of spec lower

    • @591tad
      @591tad Před 3 měsíci

      It’s damage from the buffer pin strikes around the rim. I’ve contacted the manufacturer and awaiting for a response. Diamondback has lifetime warranty and I’m hoping to send it in for repair. Thank you for your wisdom and prompt response.

      That means that your buffer is bottoming out in the tube on recoil. Could be a combination of things. Rifle buffer in carbine tube. Under sprung. Out of spec tube that’s too short. Rifle tube and buffer with a carbine spring. Etc. I’d have to examine your specific rifle to make that determination
