- "Old Folks at Home" (aka "Swanee River", "Swanee Ribber" or "Suwannee River") is a song written by Stephen Foster and has been the official state song of Florida.
Old Folks at Home words text Lyrics:
Way down upon de Swanee Ribber, River
Far, far away,
Dere's wha my heart is turning ebber,
Dere's wha de old folks stay.
All up and down de whole creation
Sadly I roam,
Still longing for de old plantation,
And for de old folks at home.
All de world is sad and dreary,
Eb-rywhere I roam;
Oh, brothers, how my heart grows weary,
Far from de old folks at home
2nd verse
All round de little farm I wandered
When I was young,
Den many happy days I squandered,
Many de songs I sung.
When I was playing wid my brudder
Happy was I;
Oh, take me to my kind old mudder!
Dere let me live and die.
All de world am sad and dreary,
Eb-rywhere I roam;
Oh, brothers, how my heart grows weary,
Far from de old folks at home
3rd Verse
One little hut among de bushes,
One dat I love
Still sadly to my memory rushes,
No matter where I rove.
When shall I see de bees a-humming
All round de comb?
When shall I hear de banjo strumming,
Down in my good old home?
All de world am sad and dreary,
Eb-rywhere I roam;
Oh, brothers, how my heart grows weary,
Far from de old folks at home

@Briar Hugo Definitely, I've been using Flixzone for since march myself :)
@Briar Hugo thank you, signed up and it seems to work :D I really appreciate it!!
Thanks, it was a lovely song while I was in Primary school. Very playful days catching spiders, pray for world peace. God bless all . Amen
Thanks 🙏❤️
My first-grade teacher, Mrs. Youngberg of Osborne Elementary School, taught us this sweet old song by Steven Foster, in 1951. 71 years later I am still remembering the chorus. So nice!
Wonderful! Thanks
I love old songs, it's like storytelling and it's so pure❤ unlike music nowadays..😔
Yes
This was a song written for a blackface performance written to make fun of black people. Maybe find better memories
Thanks
In my country in Indonesia, this song has become a Church song. Especially for us Papuan/Melanesian. Almost every Folk songs of America and Europe has become Church songs that included in the Bible. They used the same Rhythm so whenever you heard some Old American Folk songs you would know that they are not playing Folk song, they are playing Gospel song. But, still not everything are included of course, not including "Oh, Suzanna" or any Children songs though😆
This song has its own Native version too aside from Indonesian. I grew up with this song. My Pa loved to play this in the morning on the speaker whenever I preparing to go to School. We were so poor so that's the only song we had. Sorry for Bad English😁
Thanks. You’re English was good!
Very surprising!
Thank you for your comment, so informative.
And congrats for your English, speaking a foreign language is much more difficult than what english speakers think (even when using a translator, like I do sometimes, to make translations faster and don't get headaches remembering rarely used words! xD ).

Approaching 30, remembered this song from my childhood. Once a beaconite, always a beaconite!
Beaconite?
Thanks for the lovely song😊.
This song remains a favourite classic in surprising , far flung corners of the world.
Mind you, the word "plantation" does not carry any negative connotations elsewhere the way it does in the US. Many agricultural crops are grown in plantations all over the world.
Thanks for the positive comments and information !
What does it matter that plantations exist in other places if what it meant in the song had everything to do with chattel slavery? I do not for the life of me understand how a minstrel song can be "lovely" while it exists to make fun of slaves longing for their masters.
Florida, my home!

Sadly, you really don't 'get' these Songs of Love and Loss and Death. You have a pleasant light Voice but a superficial 'Pop' Style.
This is a Man who has left Home for whatever reason - and Time has passed, he can't go back...He doesn't belong ANYWHERE, he's a lonely Wanderer.
These Songs are poignant. They are full of Sadness, Loss, Death, Displacement.
Not just pretty Tunes.
I do get these songs Suzanne however, please see my reply to you on Old Black Joe-
This song is from a minstrel show and was written to make fun of Black slaves "longing" for their masters. It is only a poignant reminder of the casual and callous way that Black people were treated
When I hear this I think .. Man idk would miss the plantations.. I’m pretty sure a former slave won’t .
Grazie mille!!! Canzone bellissima e cantate bene... Thanks for emotion
Biagio Indino thanks for your comments!

Alex Fromnic what about him?
Lol I was waiting for this comment
😆😆😆
The only reason THEY removed it FROM being Florida State anthem was the word plantation....aint that sad
😢
There were sadder derogatory lyrics originally. They replaced one particular word with 'brother'
will and the song was written as a minstrel song so that's most likely why it got removed just like turkey in the straw
Where was turkey... removed from?
@@CharlesSzaboPhD it was one the many songs ice cream trucks played but they stopped playing it because of it's racist history

Here in Brazil we have an evangelical version of this song called "O Exilado" (The Exile)
Nice. Do you have the words?
@@CharlesSzaboPhD The Exile
I'm far away from my beautiful homeland
I'm tired
I miss Jesus
Oh, when will I go?
Little birds, beautiful flowers
They want to enchant me
They are earthly splendors
But contemplate my home
Jesus gave me His promise
Come get me
My heart is in a hurry
I want to fly now
My sins were many
I'm very worried
But His blood makes me clean
I'm going to my homeland
Which son of your home misses
I wanna go
Which bird for the nest
To run away into your arms
He is faithful, His coming is certain
When? I don't know
But He tells you to be alert
From exile I will return
I await your coming, singing
My home in heaven
I will hear your footsteps sounding
Beyond the hidden dark
Little birds, beautiful flowers
They want to enchant me
They are earthly splendors
But contemplate my home

When was it released and who is the original singer?
1850’s. Before recordings so no one actually
It was commissioned in 1851 by E. P. Christy for use by Christy's Minstrels, his minstrel troupe, before sound recording.
A decent early recorded version (in spite of the static) is this 1915 version by Alma Gluck:

Is this the song that gave rise to the expression "Up the Swanee" (i.e. in an awkward predicament, difficult situation, or irreversible scenario)?

Composer: Edward Norton
As a non-American (I'm Brazilian), I sincerely don't understand what does this song has to do with racism... I ask this because 1951 cartoon Droopy's Good Deed by Tex Avery has one censored scene in which Spike gets all blackened because he was struck by a lightning bolt and a piece of this song's instrumental plays at the background. I wish I could understand it more correctly...
Because white entertainers back in the mid 1800’s used to paint their faces black and imitate black people while singing songs such as this. It was wasn’t very flattering. It was called Black Face entertainment.

That was how the song was written in 18XX. The PC police have edited Mr. Foster's song, the line was not "Oh BROTHER how my heart groes weary."
Stephen Foster was a white man writing a song that a black man would have sung.

Why change the lyrics.just don’t play it if you got to change it
I wanted more people to be able to enjoy the song without anyone being offended
Because it doesn't change the sentiment of the song at all, unless of course you're a racist, and then it completely ruins the song.
