The Ogre Battle series has been among my favorites for decades.
As a huge fan of Final Fantasy Tactics, I've been eagerly anticipating the release of Tactics Ogre: Reborn. I had always been conflicted as to what version of the game to play since each one seems to have its own weird quirks, so having a definitive release of the game makes it a lot easier on me.
here's hoping an FFT remaster comes soon too
@@Kain5th It was included in the NVIDIA leak, so chances are it's gonna happen.
I was not that big a fan of the PSP version of the game, but this is a huge improvement! They took out the grinding in the game and made all classes more enjoyable, before it had a much worse form of the JP system from tactics where you could pull from every class but had to level every class to get those skills. Now you can just pick whatever classes you like and enjoy it to the fullest! I still am not a fan of the whole branching path's thing in this and a lot of games, as it's just a dumb gimmick that does not make any story better, but it's not too bad in this game. At the end you can replay any route easy without having to completely restart the game which helps but if you go to the point of making something like that to make it easier, just don't do stupid different routes stuff to begin with lol.
I always think branching paths are great for replays....but then I remember after I finish most games (if even lol) I rarely play them again 😅 And then, while playing, I also get anxious about making the right decisions, so...I'm gonna have to agree with you xD
I agree with you for completely with the branching paths. Especially when personally, the only path that I found well done was the Chaos path, the other routes were very meh for me (especially the neutral route that bored me to tears).
I prefer a well done story, than unnecessary Branches. IMO that is just Quantity over Quality (this also applies to the Palace of the Dead, a boring dungeon that artificially increases gameplay hours).
I didn't have any problem leveling every class, since I always had at least one of every class in my roster anyway. I really don't like how I only get to have four spells and four skills equipped in TO: Reborn and I really hate that certain skills are auto skills.
For example, your berserker is in range to finish off an enemy, but berserk procs. Now you can't finish off the enemy without hitting an adjacent ally.
I view reborn as a dummy version of LUCT. Maybe it'll get better as I play more, but so far it's more take than give.
@@Tengokuchi I dunno I prefer having set classes versus mix and match OP builds and heck in most game with classes you don't get many worthwhile skills, so it's nothing new for me haha.
A good Idea for berserker I found was if you use a 1H weapon and a shield. You can use your shield to save your berserk proc, it's a neat little trick!
Can you tell me what you mean by they took out all the grinding? That’s the reason I never played this game is because I hate hours and hours of grinding, so are you saying this game is pretty smooth sailing?
This game is phenomenal. Really, EVERYTHING they changed makes the individual classes shine. They got rid of the crazy and also boring grinding. The entire game is just perfected now.
Btw: You have three turns to revive a teammate before they die permanently. Any NPC that you have to protect is dead and gone from the story if they get incapacitated unless they are a "Guest". You can absolutely lose access to side quests by letting such optional NPCs perish.
I have PTSD flashbacks of trying to keep Ravness alive in the PSP version. It was almost as bad as keeping Rafa alive in FF Tactics!
I played the PS1, PSP and now Reborn, and they changed so much about the game that I don't even consider it the same game anymore, they REALLY overhauled the entire balance, removed grinding completely, and skewed the the game towards absolute balance and strategy over the RPG aspects. Some people might not like that, but to me this is perhaps one of the best, if not THE best SRPG ever made. It solves every balance problem of the original and the PSP versions, and kills the filler. Masterpiece imo.
The storytelling is incredible in this game. Stick with it, trust me. Also if you plan to "complete it" instead of just beat it then prepare to spend over a hundred hours at least. There is a lot of content.
There is a few difficulty spikes near the end of Chapter 2/3 that is extremely daunting when unprepared. Great review though!
Square has been on a roll with remastering their classics, and it really seems like a lot of love was put into making Tactics Ogre the best it could be
Man I’ve had a pretty shit day and thought ‘what will cheer me up’. Super Derek video has done the trick. Love your work mate.
Just finished it. Law route. Good Godamn that had a hell if a story. The game is HUGE. And...not easy. At all.
Loved every bit of it. The narrative was really solid which kept me going If I started to get burnt out. Phenomenal game. Truly.
Give it a week or two and I'll be checking out the other route. Truly an amazing experience I can't recommend it enough. Took the number 1 strategy spot, easily. The narrative really elevated it.
I love the Ogre series. Bought this day one, hoping they remake the rest of the series, especially Ogre Battle 64.
I was on the fence but you convinced me to buy the game! Thanks for these Experience Points videos!
Gotta check this out since its the progenitor of one of my favorite games of all time (FFT). Man, if FFT got just as much love as TO: Reborn for its upcoming remaster, it would be incredible!
Awesome video! I think I am going to pick this up this weekend.
I am not sure if it is as much of a cult classic, but I would love a new release of Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber (as long as they didn't change too much of the gameplay). That is one of my favorite tactical RPGs of all time!
I just grabbed my copy of ogre battle 64 from home & I can’t wait to get into it! I remember really enjoying it! It was overwhelming but I hope I’m more patient these days :p
tactics ogre is one of my favorites, i have it for ps1. i just finished my ogre battle collection and couldnt be happier
Have you played the GBA knights of Lodis? It's been a long time but the start of this game seems to be identical to knight of Lodis so far.
Are they the same game storywise?
3 of you start in a shed, a group comes you attack they are good guys. You go to free someone
@@drowningin not the same game story at all. this one is much better
I've been super excited for this game for a while now! Can't wait to get it
I loved this on the psp, but only got half way thru. Now that it comes out on switch, im definitely playing this to completion (next year of course, i have way too many games on my backlog)
It's only my favourite game :)
Mine too, and GOTY 2022 :')
Derek had summoned me. Oh? a TACTICS OGRE VIDEO?! WHAT?
Would like to hear what Derek has to say about this game after he experiences the first "junction," if you will, when he has to make his first hard decision. -Baku
It's also available on PC fyi. I've been playing it on my steam deck and have been thoroughly enjoying it.
I swear to god you’re a brain ninja. I was JUST thinking about picking this up on steam deck! Thanks for making this video. PS Demon Gaze looks great, congrats on getting the sponsor!
Thanks dude! Definitely the more I see of it the more interested I get in picking up a copy for myself! :D
This game is a masterpiece in the tactical RPG genre. Just awesome all around, I love it. I hope they keep making more of these kind of games in the future.
It might sound silly, but this has become my GOTY 2022. The definitive version of a true masterpiece, and my first time with it. Can't get enough of it.
I played the PSP version of this when it came out very briefly. So you can imagine how excited I was when this updated version was announced. It's nice this is available on PS4 and PS5 and a physical release. I'll be picking this up on PS5 eventually.
I think it's safe to assume that people are wondering if Square-Enix will be doing a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions afterwards.
I bought this game and am excited to play it based on what you have said. Is it true that some of the staff members that made Final Fantasy Tactics also worked on this game? Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite tactics RPG games and that would be awesome if some of the staff of FFT worked on this game.
Same creator/director, Yasumi Matsuno. He did the Ogre Battle games and then when he left Quest for Squaresoft he created the Ivalice universe and its games, so FF Tactics, Vagrant Story, and FF 12 later on
This is another great looking remaster. It really captures the old graphical style without looking old. I may have to grab this at some point.
Tactical RPGs didn't really get much showing in the west until FF Tactics put a spotlight on them, but the genre goes back to the Famicom. As far as I know, Fire Emblem was the first, with Shining Force and Langrisser/Warsong right on its heels. Famicom Wars/Advance Wars, isn't an RPG series, but it's very similar to tactical RPGs, and is about as old.
While Nintendo left the genre locked in Japan, the Genesis got at least five tactical RPGs (Shining Force 1&2, Warsong, Master of Monsters, and Buck Rogers), with another two on Sega CD (Dark Wizard and Shining Force CD). So if you want to examine the earliest games in the genre, the Genesis is a good place to start, but there are also a number of SNEs games that never left Japan which now have fan translations.
The genre definitely has long battles, but you have to think of them as equivalent to an entire dungeon from a classic JRPG. The combat replaces a lot of the exploration factor in other RPGs. Some people aren't going to enjoy that, but different strokes for different folks.
I haven't finished Tactics Ogre or Triangle Strategy, but I think Triangle Strategy is the better choice for newcomers. Triangle strategy has WAY less customization to deal with and when you fail fights, you keep your exp - you can keep failing forward until you win. Tactics Ogre is one of the most in depth Tactics RPGs I've tried - pretty strong difficulty and complex tactics and feels pretty unforgiving, I'd say.
SuperDerek, playing a tactical RPG? How about that! It's a good port from my experience so far
Me playing a Tactics RPG? It's more likely than you might think! I've got a few that I've reviewed so far. 3 in fact. ;)
@@SuperDerek Haha, fair enough. I just recall hearing you didn't play many or gravitate toward them as much
I can agree with the font looking somewhat comic sans-y
that's a good preview from a non-tactics playing perspective. Hey do you cosplay Zell?
My absolute favourite game is ogre battle 64 I play it once a year since I was like 12 or 13 feel like there is no game truly similar to it. so I am very happy that Tactics Ogre got this remaster it revitalizes this great IP.
I think the price is a bit much for what they did, but then again I'm not a hardcore Square fan who will buy anything they squirts out.
This game has been so good so far, the essence of what I love about tactics games. Also very happy it's not HD-2D, it's nice and all, but it shouldn't replace 2D visuals in all remasters of RPGs and I'd feel this game would lose it's identity somewhat if it was HD-2D. Overall it's everything I love in a strategy RPG!
Played and beat the Playstation version. Liked it, but it had some problems. Would be interested to pick this up as a sort of alternate version to that game. There seem to be ALOT of changes.
Holy smokes, Derek. You have abandoned your "radio voice" for a natural conversational tone and mannerisms and I think this was a great move. Nothing against the professional radio voice, but for the first time, I feel like I truly relate. (Admittedly haven't watched your videos in a long while so I do not know how long you've been filming with this less-scripted style.)
Ireally love tactics ogre and I have played the psp remake "let us cling togeather" to death as a kid. The combat is fun and the story interesting the only thing I remember not really liking about it was how brutal the perma death could be but that could have just been due to me being 12 when I played it
Damn derek, your lookin good!
I love this game, but I really hope square brings back Ogre Battle (SNES game) - this one was far more unique. Tactics Ogre was fairly original for it's time - I think it's the first isometric tactical game - but there are a ton of games done in this style now.
I like how the choices in these games affect who you can recruit to your party as well as the story. The music and voice acting are also fantastic in this remake. The class system here is far better than the job system in FFT (IMO) - every class seems to have it's place here and it's fairly easy to keep a large versatile army with the training battles.
I don't know if a massive cult following is an oxymoron or not? :) But we certainly are loud and loyal.
Its good. I don't like the buff cards though. For lore reasons i don't like little cards appearing all over the battlefield for my tactical high fantasy war game. Besides that it is fantastic.
I could totally see that! It kind of throws a big ol' monkey wrench into your planning I think, but I still like the idea of abusing the system to buff my people to a crazy degree! 😄
I'm sure it can't be worse than FFTA's law system 😆
Illegal:
Attacking
Healing
@@Majuular I actually liked the judges. They even explained it well.
It made playing for hundreds of hours not seem like the same fight over and over
@@Majuular . Is that combination even possible?
While I am not really a fan of FFTA law mechanic, your oversimplification doesn't do justice to the system.
The laws are not random, they are set depending on the day you are currently, giving you the chance to plan ahead for your team or to even "change them" by triggering the fight in a different day.
There are law cards that help you to modify or even nullify laws.
There is no real reason to be in a "forbidden to attack/heal" situation.
@@SeventhheavenDK it was a joke lol chill
I just bought this RPG Rogue Galaxy that's pretty fun trying to level up you know takes a while but you know🙂🙂🙂🎆✨️🎇✨️
It's a stellar game for sure! Loved my time with it, with a few flaws I covered in my full review of it. But all in all, phenomenal. :)
I played the original PS1 version, I'm interested, but 50$ for a mostly remaster seems outrageous
I'm inclined to disagree here. Considering it's a fully voice-acted and completely overhauled version of a game people were paying $200+ for on eBay just a couple months ago, this sounds like _a pretty solid alternative._ But I mean, if you have already played the game I suspect you don't really need to buy and play it again.
Wait until a steam sale and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Wait! Did they remove perma death?! Footage looks good, but skills look weird. Replaying chapters for other alignment seems good. Hopefully we can mix route exclusive recruits.
Ok, so apparently it still exists but you have 3 turns to revive someone first, and you can equip them with resurrection stones that also really helps apparently.
This game rules.
I agree with NitroRads big brother here
Very nice 👍
Its ALL the good
Is it as good, better, or worse than Final Fantasy Tactic?
final fantasy tatics for switch. nice.
So many Strat RPGs to get.....
This is the one I never got around to for some reason which seems like blasphemy as a big fan of the genre now that I'm finally playing it. I guess back in the day I thought it was just "FF Tactics but literally worse in every single way" LOL
Bro if you wanna play an amazing TRPG.. go to what I feel, is the first.. it was my first.. you gotta play shining force 1 and 2..
Oh after looking it up Ogre tactics was the first In 1993
