Leibniz on the catenary

  • Leibniz's 1691 study of the catenary was an important early application of the calculus. His approach is very different from what one would find in a calculus textbook today. Instead of giving the equation for the curve, he uses the physical curve to determine logarithms, in what ay be seen as a kind of reversal of current paradigms of "pure" and "applied" mathematics.
