    1. do you feel you could’ve started traveling sooner than 2yrs?
    2. i’m so scared!!! i’m constantly thinking “what if i don’t know enough for this new hospital”, how’s it been adjusting to new colleagues & diff ways of doing things?
    3. do they really give the travel nurses the harder assignments, assuming they should know how to do everything?

I felt I could have only because of my training. By my first three months I was cross trained on two units, and by 6 months I was charging (short staffed 😂). I just felt well prepared, but everyone always recommends two years so that’s how I tracked my course at my original hospital and planned for it. I have a friend who only has a year and it’s been HARD to find a contracts smh That alone would make me wait the two years lol I Also, if you haven’t reached the point where you feel ok advocating for yourself vocally wait until your nursing confidence kicks in! That took me a year to do, and by year two I felt comfortable standing up for myself.
I felt the SAME way! I had hyped myself
Up for my two year mark, got my Cali license, and Covid hit 🙃 I ended up staying at my hospital out of fear of not finding an assignment (recruiters didn’t call me for a YEAR since I wasn’t ICU or ED). I ended up getting BURNT out and was miserable. Traveling saved my entire perception of nursing because I thought I hated my career, when in fact I just didn’t like my home facility anymore. My coworkers were the only positive light for me, but we all started leaving.
I have been blessed on both assignments to work at two great hospitals that treat everyone like family. I have yet to have the worst assignment, and so I’m very helpful when I see my coworkers who do have harder assignments. I never felt like they were plotting to give me the worst, but I am prepared to face that. You have to learn to speak up for yourself and the safety of your pts. At the end of the day me having multiple heavy pts (restraints, dementia, climbing out of bed, AMS, uncontrolled vitals, etc) while other staff have lighter assignments doesn’t allow for good care. During report I listen intently for clues, because you can ALWAYS tell when they are giving you a tough pt. It’s always best to make assignments based on acuity, and if I feel like I’m being taken advantage of in that way I speak up. At my own hospital I went as far as calling the supervisor before finishing report, because 3 out of 5 were ICU transfers who needed to be there but their staff was short 🙃 I also had floated to a new unit. Everyone else had walkie talkies and we’re chilling. I think not lol My motto is “I’m not there for you to like me I’m here to take care of my pts”. It def takes some time for you to learn to speak up for yourself, but once you do you won’t stop! Lol I’m also ALWAYS prepared to work alone. I came from a floor where people HELPED each other so I love that, but I’ve also worked floors where people see you fighting for your life and don’t blink. So it’s nice to work with great staff, but that won’t always be the scenario so I take my time management seriously so I can stay on track just in case no one can help me.
