FORGOTTEN 1966 GMC gets BUDGET Makeover. AMAZING Transformation

- Here is part 2 of the FORGOTTEN 1966 GMC truck revival. In part 1 we swapped in a 250 inline 6 and rebuilt T5 5 speed transmission. Disaster struck when we ran into driveshaft trouble. In this episode we will do some modern interior upgrades, rant about driveshafts, shine up the primer and go for a test drive.

My cats don't listen to me either. but the sure pretend to care what I'm yak about come feedin time. Be well. PS That was truly kind of those guys willing to make those donations, I hope their days are the best ever. see ya on the next one.
Haha yeah I try to save the important conversations for feeding time!
That seat is a great addition to the blue pickup. Keep up the rants, people say it's healthy to just let it go and not hold all your frustrations in. 😂
More rants coming soon! Haha
A little driving rant is good for the soul
"People are idiots and should keep their mouths shut." a quote from Kyle's new book on etiquette and motor swapping. 🤣🤣 👍
Look for it on shelves soon at your nearest bookstore!
I've made it to the end. Survived trough the tons of commercials. I know that you get paid out of them, but surely, there are plenty of them.
Enjoyed watching you waiting on the train. Then commercials went in. After they've stopped, I see you still waiting for the train. But, nevertheless, whole time on that ramp waiting on train, with commercials is nothing comparing with the time we spent at the ramp waiting for train to pass. Here, that's measured in 1/4 of the hour, starting point. If you're lucky, you'll wait from 1/4 of the hour to the 1/2 hour, and if you're not, you can watch two of your videos by the time train passes.
P.S. I'm not complaining against commercials, I'm complaining about train passings.
😢 Trains make that lonesome sound....
I can totally relate to this video. People who tell me what they don't like about my truck don't have to ride in it. Their opinion means nothing unless they want to contribute the money to buy the parts that are more to their liking. I have 2005 Scion TC seats and they're comfortable, and only cost me $50 for the pair.
Use what ya got to make what ya don't!
This is honestly one of my favorite projects going on CZcams right now. Very doable, very approachable, well within the average enthusiasts abilty level. Bravo. I LOVE stuff like Scott's Fury over on CWM - but i don't ever see myself getting to the point i could/will do that. Tbis however restores a bit of hope. Realistically i would have about $3 to $5k getting a truck this vintage and getting it where this is. And it would still be a real truck, or as used to call these builds "a shop truck".. Thanks Kyle and much appreciated 👍
Thanks Charley!
I was 3 when "Dear Old Dad" bought his '66 GMC new. He finally sold it in '92 and he passed in '94. Seeing yours helps remind me of him and my days as a 'snot nosed' kid bumping around in the bed of the truck before people got all judgmental. I rode my bike without a helmet, Jumped 'trash cans' with it, I stayed out till the street lights came on and I even 'drank water from the garden hose'.. I lived through it all.. I'm 60 and I'm STILL HERE!!!
That's awesome, glad my old pickup could bring back some memories!
I love your sense of humour Carter. And your cats.
Thanks!
The 3 speed w/over drive unit you mentioned is what I installed in my '77 C10. I (at once upon a time) had a '58 Impala with the 3 speed and overdrive and a friend had a '61 Biscayne with one also.
He decided he wanted to install a 4 speed so I bought his 3 speed and had it in storage for decades, finally using it in the C10 a few years ago.
Keep up the good work and I'm glad you got your shop truck back to a functional state.
Thanks Russ! The 3 speed with overdrive would have been way cooler than the T5, but overall I'm happy with the outcome
Your 66 brings back many many memories of the 65 Chevrolet I had when I was 20ish (66 now). The most vivid memory was when I pulled up to a curb to park. The front tire caught the curb, then the steering wheel spun out of my grip, a crack in the wheel ripped open the web between my thumb and finger (nasty). I will remember that forever! I see by the new crack-less steering wheel on yours, you will never have that problem.
👎🤪
Ouch! Sorry for bringing back that painful memory!
Well, that’s forty minutes of my life I will never get back…but, I like the Moon eyes 👀
Carter's hair styling . I like that too .
Kyle, you're a lot younger than me, but I agree. I don't like people either. You're an old soul dude. And people like me, like you. Keep posting bro.
Haha thanks, I'll try!
As a Sask boy myself, I always wondered where you lived. The crappy tire drive answered my question. Much enjoy your content.
I like your dry sarcastic beatnick attitude and am duly impressed with your meatalworking skills. You hold my attention and teach me things. Thank you .
Love you lecture about "people". I agree completely.
Whatever that stuff was that you put on the truck turned out nice. At first I thought it was shoe polish. I painted the side of my pick-up bed with rattle cans. It didn't look half bad.
Yeah it's too bad rattle cans have gotten so expensive! Oh well haha
You may be the Syd Barrett of car restoration , glad the seat trauma is resolved. The cats will guide you and the algorithm will provide .
I trust the cats. The algorithm, not so much! Haha
Amazing bondo work. It is an art form really.
26:40 Showing off the mountainous scenery of Saskatchewan!! The truck looks cool in the flat black. But the light blue would be real nice too!
That's our second highest mountain range!
That train must be headed past Randahl's shed next. She's looking good, Kyle! Thanks as always.
I bribed the engineer to park the train at Randahl's crossing for a couple hours.
I once asked Buzz Alderton which brand of body filler they used on the space station, and he confirmed that it had, indeed, been the Napa. You nailed it!
It's a relief to know my repair is astronaut approved!
@@CarterAutoRestyling ol' "Buzz" is 93 years old now, born on January 20th 1930. He and I share the same birthday. He's probably still full of " piss and vinegar" 😁
I enjoyed the video ... even if it is a lot about you talkin alot and pacin around in your fancy jacket ... drivin around in your fancy truck ... showin your fancy neighborhood ... can't wait for the reconstruction stage ... 👍
Haha thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Nice seats and and a new windshield are two of my favorite things. new shocks are quite fun as well. Its the little things in life.
So glad I found your channel. Thanks.
I'm glad you enjoy it!
The ending had me cracking up with all the shuffling side to side, looks like you are turning into Bad Kyle
That's the goal! Haha
Enjoying you and Shed by the Tracks Drama.
I'm glad someone's enjoying the drama! It keeps me up at night, not to mention the legal fees!
Haha
My 1950 Chevy 3100 has the same fade to the epoxy coated rear fenders glad you mentioned both products that would give a temporary spiff-up without causing future painting woes. @@CarterAutoRestyling
Perhaps DD Speed Shop would trade you a bucket of bondo and a 6 cylinder engine for that sweet bench seat.
I'd be getting the better end of the deal on that one haha
You and coldwar motors are the best underated channels out there. Love the whole im so chill and a cat on hot rocks vibe you got. Yeah i hated those seats too oh and people on the roads or just people in general. The hack and pack job on Scott's old Studebaker in the rain at night was epic amount of hackery all that was needed was some licence plates and some old metal fly screen to form panels. Not that ive done that more than twice......... Looking forward to the truck build.
Haha thank you!
Liked and subscribed. Hello from David here in the States👋 Hang in there bro. I’m a bodyman of 33yrs now and my wife just started a CZcams channel 4 months ago and she’s already monetized. Just starting out she’s made $170 in just 2 days now. It’s called Pretty Little Lies. I can appreciate what your trying to do my friend. Keep doing what your doing and everything will work out. Keep up your faith🙏 and keep asking Father for his help and he’ll open up doors for you. At least he has for us over the years❤️ Love you brother ❤️ Great video and content. You’ll be where you need to be before you know it. Much love and respect👍🙂
Thanks David. Congratulations to your wife on her youtube channel success!
No, no! The radiator's not dead, it's just restin' after a long squonk!
Great video! The GMC is sweet. Love to see it back in baby blue
Yes I’d like to see her Blue again
Thanks!
Careful Kyle--Randahl might go all "Hobo" on you and hop the next northbound train to Saskatchewan and show up on your stoop! Then you'll have two problems and one of them you will have to feed!😆
Normally I wouldn't bother to feed the person I'm feuding with, but we need to take care of the elderly!
Its a nice restoration. Buying it when you were 13 make me wish I had my first pickup great story thanks 😊
Thanks for watching!
Before posting this comment I did a little research and found that "deckle" is actually an accepted proununciation of decal in Canada. Who knew? But regarding the seat that you denounced with such passion: looks to me like it has a fold-down arm rest. What's not to like about that? I would tell you not to throw it in the dumpster because somebody will definitely want it. But on second thought, I don't think you throw anything in the dumpster.
Well the arm rest is completely useless with a manual transmission, but don't worry the seat didn't get thrown away! It's going in the truck I will be selling, that way someone else can throw it away haha
It was a heartwarming episode with the love and close bond you have with your $30 seat....beautiful!
That was the longest and most passionate dissertation against a seat in recorded history. You should have put it in the back of your truck. That way when you saw the train approaching you could have tied the seat to the train tracks, like in those old movies!
Hahah thanks! Great idea for the seat disposal!
The old truck looks like a good old rum runner 🎉🎉
It sure does! Haha
Man, the OBS crew is going to be HEATED about your seat rant.
Haha good thing most of them probably aren't watching my channel about fixing old junk!
That old truck will serve you well for years to come. Great video, thanks.
Hope so! Thanks for watching!
Yet another great upload...Your content resonates with your viewers because we've all been in similar situations! Thanks for sharing and adding humour to my day Kyle! Keep it up. Looking forward to the next upload.
Thanks Andy! More to come soon!
Good job! That's a really nice old truck, enjoy it!
Thanks John!
If you use this as a work truck and you want to paint it - look into commercial coatings from whatever brand you like to use. I use PPG, and they have a lot of different types of commercial coatings that are considerably cheaper than automotive paint and still have a wide array of colors, including different shades of light blue. For instance, I use AUE--300 on frames, it dries hard and doesn't chip and is not affected by most chemicals. It is cheaper than powder coating and can be repaired. The full cure time on it is 30-60 days (like most enamels), in which it can be dented so as long as it is sitting and unused, it should cure very hard and last a long time. It also takes an activator and hardener in order to get that film strength.
Thanks for the paint suggestions!
Thanks for confirming my suspicion that you come from the wrong side of the tracks.
Fukn GREASER! I KNEW IT!
I always thought of myself as more of a Soc haha
@@CarterAutoRestyling You're getting there lol.
This bench seat that was true to its name and got benched!👀
Someone had to do it!
Excellent job on that patch panel, now when your Big Gulp hits the floor from locking up the brakes while racing, the pavement/driveway/dirt will remain nice and dry.
they have big gulps in canada?
Perhaps a mega-sized coffee from Tim Hortons?@@narrowgaugegreg
Thanks, I'm really proud of how it turned out!
Looks like the feud with the elderly guy in his shed is heating up.. I can't wait to see which one of you is institutionalize first. I have a couple of suggestions to improve your channel. 1. Move around more and wave your arms vigorously. 2. Repeat the same sentence over and over. 3. Marry a girl half your age to run the camera. (I don't know about Canadian law but that's illegal north of Missouria in the states....you're probably fine Saskatchewan) Nice truck, I'm very envious. Cheers and all the best
For a minute there, I thought you were genuinely trying to offer helpful suggestions. Then I remembered that I'm still cleaning up the mess from the last time I took your advice. My brain may be fried from years of exposure to bodyshop chemicals, but....something something...where am I?....Thanks so much for the helpful advice, I can't wait to use your ideas to help grow the channel!
Greatly enjoyed this episode.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
F'n eh, bud. Great video.
When yer first in line for the train, stare at yer gauges. It feels like yer spinnin around.
That engine runs nice. Yer way ahead,
Tires cost ridiculous now. 1400 for a K20? WTF?
That sure looked nice with the goop on it.
That seat woulda pissed me off too, I'm fat, lol.
I had a 5 speed once, 84 Toyota, it went nice in 1, 3, 5. Felt like a 3 speed. I've always love a 3 speed on a V8.
I wish I still had all the model cars I built. Some were even morphs, lol.
My 62 C50 has the "real" steady bearing mount. I had to add 6 inches to it to accommodate the V8 difference.
Cheers to Scott and Paul for the driveshaft offers.
You drive like me. Sensible. My 62 bus goes 95 to 100 Km now with the new 22.5" on it.
I gear down at every stop, hardly touch the brakes. With the red bottles, it turns heads, lol.
2 grand to 2200. That's good enough. I'm slowing them all down. They're safer, lol.
Theses comments are all f'd up, watched 3 times to comment on as much as I could.
3 ceasers and and a J, lol. I watched Scott's video and yours, guess I'll go watch those Russians kill another Lada, lol.
Cheers, bud.
Haha can't go wrong with Garage 54!
Hi kyle i was on the edge of my seat watching the drama of the seat change it was riverting tv . Cheers mate🇦🇺
Hate that seat? wow Way better than my 5 gallon paint bucket.. Meow meow, too.
The shift lever looks remarkedly like the one I use in my 51 Chevy floor shift conversion. Cool.
Not all of us can afford a cushy 5 gallon paint bucket, so we make do with what we have!
I had an 89 CRX with both sweet, factory, exposed "patina" foam, seats. Four of the five kids to haul around at the time. The driver's seat (the only one to be concerned about) had a broken seat-back bracket, which I "repaired" with an orange crate propping it forward at the expense of rear illegal passenger legroom. They had short legs. It was fine. . .
Always an enjoyable time with your "sharkazm" and videos. Keep up the good work..

Great old truck. Glad to see it back in service, and with a seat you don't hate.
You should have kept the roadside freebie bucket seat though. You could make easier access by using a swing away steering column from a BMW Isetta. 😂
Oh I'm saving the bucket seat for a future project!
Your rage wasn't misguided, that seat stinks. I decided yesterday to buy a 200hp motorcycle, and I'll still agree people drive too fast. Truck looks and sounds great, buddy, it shaped up nicely. Cheers, from New Hampshire.
Enjoy the new motorcycle!
love the Moon Eyes, i went to school with Steve Moon his family made the old speed equipment the shop was in Santa Fe springs Ca. it was always cool to visit 60+ years ago. good content
That's really cool! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing,, 👍😎👍
I had a carrier bearing break loose on a '65 C-10. Ended up using a bunch of baling wire to tie it back up in there to make it the 20 miles home. Never was a fan of the things afterwards. That ol' 65 Chevy ended up with a hood off a 66 GMC (along with fancy chrome jet/bird hood ornament) and was originally while. I had sanded and rattle can primered the surface rust on it and my first wife hated it. I worked evenings and someone gave her a gallon can of blue enamel and I came home one night and she'd brush painted it. It stayed like that for years after I sold it to my brother (who replaced the Chevy 230 six with a GMC 305 V-6. When I had to drive it to North Caroling and back from Texas, that ol 230 six had a rocker arm come loose and dent up the valve cover. That I fixed on the side of the road. Also had the fan belt break and I made it to the next exit where I bought a new one and installed it. On the return trip, I had one of the ancient tires blow out.
Haha, that's awesome. Love the road side fix storys!
We can be sure that some of those roadside repairs occurred in the rain.
Thanks...
I understand your frustration with drivers that need to be there 30 seconds quicker. That is the main goal, not appreciating the drive. Crazy. I love that truck with any seat. I’ve driven some that are spring loaded and a piece of cardboard. 👍
Haha yeah I like to stuff a couple old T shirts in the spring loaded cardboard seats for extra comfort!
I'm in Seattle and those people will ride your bumper, flipping you off on city streets. When we all show up at the next red light, I smile inside.
@@scottcates What I love even more is when they squeal tires around me, then get trapped in a different lane as I drive by. Even better when the light turns red after I go through and they are still stuck back there. Fuming.
There needs to be a special word for the deep satisfaction that accompanies this scenario. Very good.@@rumrunner1756
Don't you just hate that seat! Looking forward to "Railfanning With Kyle"!
Bondo is life😅
Bondo forever
Just subscribed! I know with the advice in comments on videos, some times you have to "separate the grain from the chaff" as my grandmother used to say. 20 plus years back, I v8 swapped my S10 truck. My non negotiable was it had to have an overdrive transmission. Now when I would tell people (pre you tube and in the early days of internet bulletin board forums) that I was going with an overdrive I was often told I was "Stupid" See when folks hear V8 and S10 in the same breath they assume you are building it to drag race. Oh I was told to run at least 4:10 gears, gut the insides, fuel cell in the bed, fenderwell headers, you name it. Instead I built a mild engine that I could afford, a 700R4 trans, and a Q jet carb. Sure I did take it to the track here and there (13.22 @ 103.9 mph) but lots of highway driving, over 50,000 miles worth getting 17-20 mpg! With no overdrive and 3.73 gears that would have been a high RPM low fuel mileage disaster.
Thanks for subscribing! I used to have several s10s and always thought a v8 s10 would make a cool street cruiser
I know that you're joking, but that Bondo could last a long time with the rubberized undercoating over it. As long as the water doesn't get to it. It does stick to rough rust pretty good. Roofing tar seals up stuff very good too. Then when the real body man get sit, he'll curse out the guy that poured roofing tar into the bottom of the doors. It "works" though. As long as it keeps the water out, the rust will not spread further.
I like your new smoking jacket!
is it on fire again!
Thanks, more smoking jacket coming soon!
That temporary paint fix set the ole rig off.. Sharp old truck
Thanks!
The old truck looks good cleaned up
Thank you!
In all honesty, that deck chair looks way more comfortable and better positioned than the old seat that we both hated. The deck chair has nothing on that original (proper) seat though! Nice work.
The deck chair will definitely be missed more than the old seat!
I never thought of Kyle as a H8R. I mean, he is a cat wrangler.
That seat is the worst seat I ever sat in. My 92 GMC had that seat and it was the first thing I had to get rid of. Even new......... they sucked. Yours lasted longer than mine (2 months). Your truck but, that thing screams patina paint job to me in the original blue of course. Old work trucks should look like work trucks, not guzzy up POS. Keep it a work truck where you can use it for work. Also, that truck is pretty quiet going down the road. I think you will love the overdrive transmission. Nice steering wheel, looks really great.
Haha at least I'm not the only one who hates these seats. The idea is to paint the truck with single stage. That way, between being parked outside and getting used as a truck it won't take long to get a natural patina
That steering wheel is in very good shape .
It's pretty rough in person, but I suppose there are no giant pieces missing
I was driving back from a show in my 35 Ford at 65 mph and a clod in a Chrysler 300 passed me and immediately got in front of me, I won’t repeat the words in my mouth. Then he did the same thing to my friend that I was following.😡
A Cold War collaboration would be awesome! It was good to see your cameo out there with the v8 challenge!
It was a fun visit there!
CoooL!!!
Thanks!
Thanks so much Scott!
Had a '75 chevy 1/2 ton. Needed some paint work. Tremclad to the rescue....lol. Different story on my 2012 ford, that's getting Rustoleum...HA!
Haha been there, done that too!
That was an AMAZING transformation!
Haha thanks!

You can now take that seat and move it into your living room. Add some headlights for mood lighting, a car radio, doors with speakers, and a vehicle roof for a coffee table, and you have a nice living room set. Cheers!
On the cats would love that!
I had that same damn seat in my last truck and cursed it for 310,000km. I think it’s responsible for all my back problems. I hated it bitterly so I feel your pain and I applaud your initiative in taking it out and putting it in the other truck so the guy who buys that will learn to despise it too. Cheers
Thanks!...
The Cadillac electric buckets from a escalade fit my 64 C10 and can't be beat for comfort.

I noticed something weird, every video I hit that subscribe button no matter who's channel it is, I like to support the creators. But I noticed that sometimes the button says unsubscribe, I hit it anyway just to be sure I am supporting. most creators remind you to do that every video, but I do it on all videos. Anyone else notice that issue?
I hated that seat as well. Don't like a lot of people, either. I love dogs though. Much nicer than people. I put somewhat expensive Michelins on my '69 Chevy pickup that gets limited use these days. They are 22 years old now with zero signs of degradation...
That's impressive they lasted that long!
You should've kept the old seat and those white face gauges are dope. Especially love the big hole in the dash, rest of the truck is shit. 😂
Hahah yup!
Truck looks really good being black. Maybe you should just squirt it with some tractor paint quick.
If ya look carefully you can notice a bit of a hole in the floor. If you use chicken wire or even bird mesh you can use that product to repair large holes up to 1 square metre.
Good common sense upgrade on the old GMC. A decent trans makes a big difference to the real world driving experience. I used to go to Canadian Tire when I was working on a test trip in Timmins Ont. Picked up some useful nik naks for my roadster build. Looking forward to some more on the blue truck and some more train spotting, of course that goes without saying. Oh yeah, reading between the lines I get the impression you're not too keen on that seat. Just a vibe I'm picking up. Mart.
I'm surprised I lasted as long as I did with the old 3 speed. The 100e is coming along great by the way!
It was pining for the fjords!
Hey Kyle, enjoying your video as usual :) looking forward to some proper rust repair videos though. But I`m sure they are coming soon to a screen near me !!
Thanks, I'm back on the rust repair as we speak!
Not adding a Cold War Motors sticker? That just won't do.......
I have a Cold War Motors sticker on my pre war car, so it seemed appropriate to put a Strongs sticker on a cold war era truck haha
If you don`t like people, there`s a Seinfeld quote made just for you.
Elaine bitches about people who get on a plane sitting next to you with nothing to read and just annoy you for the next 6 hours. She says "I will NEVER understand people." Jerry says "They`re the WORST!." He`s not wrong. Cats, on the other hand, are the best. The most no- bullshit animal on 4 feet. And here`s something you may not know about cats. The only difference between a Siberian tiger and a domestic Fluffy is the tiger is bigger, otherwise they`re the same animal with all the same abilities. Once I learned that, I never looked at cats the same way again.
Haha that's a great quote! Thanks for the info on cats too!
Nice Monty Python reference 😂 🦜
Awesome truck. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
You know you're doing it right when the hole you're trying to fill is big enough to reach through to get to the bondo you're using to fix said hole
Much hated car seat.....or new front porch furniture?
You know what would really set off that white dash for a custom effect?
A Hello Kitty sticker.
PS, Nice subliminal advertisement for Strongs Garage.
I like the way you think. Hello Kitty sticker upgrades coming soon!
That shoe polish paint job looks pretty good.
Kiwi or Lincoln?
Dave Rusk Photography sent that train from The Pas just to make you sit there and wait. I have a 283 from a 61 Apache in my garage that would make that 66 have maybe a fighting chance at 140hp... Shame I'm in Pennsylvania.
I wouldn't know what to do with that kind of horsepower. I'd probably end up wrapping it around a pole haha
I'm thinking about putting it in my 70 Chevy Van, last of the flat fronts. The 250 in it is really noisy, and does a good job on keeping the insect population from taking over the earth.
