    We will be zooming in on the face. I just love the expression.

    In the last Bouguereau master copy, I painted a monochrome under-painting first. Today I want to see how well I can paint a master copy following the Selective Start method. Also we will learn to mix classical skin tones like those painted by the masters.
    In part 1, we analyzed the skin tones painted by Bouguereau using Photoshop. We will be referring to that image while mixing the skin tones for our palette.

    It's hard seeing all these mean comments or the ones focusing on the "how to...?", instead of trying to understand the whole concept. I started to paint recently, in digital, but I try to replicate the color mixtures so when I get to paint with real oils and so, I can do it on my own instead of just "color picking" digital, cause I think part of painting is the freedom and enjoying the process, making it your own work and understanding how things work instead of just trying to copy to look good and not to enjoy the process. Really good videos! Appreciate your passion into arts and the whole work put in your videos. Thanks for sharing the knowledge! ♥

    Shelly, you are a superb teacher, very smart and knowledgeable I think, and of course quite generous to give all this time. At 0:58 on the Bouguereau "The Prayer" Part II lesson you show the tube paints you started with. I can't make out what you called the light yellow lying on the palette between Titanium White and Yellow Ochre. The best I can hear with my 75 yr. old ears was "painful" yellow. It looks like a pale Naples Yellow. My curiosity and obsessiveness drive me to ask you clarify the name and brand for me.

      Hi. So the idea of a “copy” is to try to use the exact colors and follow the same process as the master painter. However I prefer a master “study” so that I may see if I can get a similar look using the colors I choose and following the selective start method. So have fun with it! 🎨😉

      @@deborahgonzalezknight168 Hi Deborah. I start mixing a color by asking myself is it more red, yellow or blue? I start with the answered color. Then ask what value is it... light, middle, or dark? If light add white, if middle maybe add a complimentary color tone down saturation, if dark add a dark color. Yes the monitor will brighten colors but still gives you a great place to begin. Also making color charts is helpful when learning to mix colors. I will make a video soon to discuss this topic further 😀

    The likeness is good but what is the reason you do not try to copy his style that really doesn’t show as much brush strokes, especially in the very rich skin tones that almost glow. We have an original of his in the New Orleans art museum. Do not know the name but it Shows a young woman with two cherubs. I want to able to render skin tones like he does. Your video shows how to get a likeness and mix colors but fails to make a real copy. Of course, I understand that your work is alla prima and only took 4 hours which I suspect Bouguereau took much longer. You work us much better than mine by far. But if you want to copy a Bouguereau you have to copy his style as well.

    • @ShellyJCoxArtist
      @ShellyJCoxArtist  Před rokem

      Hi Robert. Yes you are right about a copy. What I should have called it was a “study”. I did this one to practice mixing skin tones. I wanted to see if I could get close to his. Bouguereau’s flesh is just so luminous. Thank you for your thoughts. I will be sure to use the word study next time 😊🙏🏻👩🏼‍🎨

  • @martmarriner6793
    @martmarriner6793 Před 3 lety

    Each brush strokes gotta touch the last n be a complete representative of the final painting is why the end result looks like a "painting by numbers" over a tracing. Don't like this technique and Sbchmidts work is kitchsey n over rated.
