I give a book about 80 pages because with a lot of books, it's rare that the first 60-ish pages grabs my attention. They're usually mundane and provide a lot of backstory for the book (which fine, but at times tends to be boring). But if I've reached the 80-page mark and I don't find anything remotely interesting, I'm not intrigued or curious at all, I don't like the characters, and I don't particularly care for the story then I dnf it and I do it proudly!😂

I usualy give books about a 100 pages before I dnf them bc I don't wanna risk getting in a book slump from them haha I also heard amazing things about powerless from Lauren Roberts it has a competition in it and a romace subplot so maybe you'll like it 😊

I should be DNFing. Would save myself a lot of trouble but I like pain and I just persevere through the book regardless of how I feel 😂😅 I’m sorry that you didn’t like Jade City. It’s one of my all time favorite books. ❤

@@bookswithellen aww to be honest I totally get where you’re coming from, the books can be a bit convoluted and it seems like it could be plotless, however the plot that kicks off the entire series happens at the halfway point, and I liked that twist, crushed me to pieces but I liked it. Similarly, I liked the book for the cultural, economic, political and martial arts aspect. However, the “fantasy” and setting aspect of the book didn’t really grip me, not entirely. I love the characters, and I love how much the author made me hate some of the characters. But I feel like if you didn’t like it at 100 pages then it might not be a good fit for you as it gets more bleak and dark. And I have to agree with you, Shae is probably my favorite character as well 😅😊🩷

Hi, I am so happy that the first 2 books were 5 star reads for you! I have added them to my tbr list (and have deleted Jade City) as I trust your taste. I have just started my first Sarah J. Maas book, about 100 pages into A Court of Thorns and Roses and I am really enjoying her writing style. I will probably switch to some suspense/mystery in September (If We Were Villains, Weyward) and then start the second book in the series which seems to be the favourite although quite the chunky book! I will usually dnf a book after a few chapters if I am not becoming invested in the story and it becomes a chore to read as there are too many good books out there to read. Have a great week and thanks for the video!

i was so happy about the 5 stars too, feel like it set me up really well for the week!! and i am SO glad you’re liking ACOTAR, makes so happy when other people love it too!! i would HIGHLT recommend if we were villains, that’s one of my five star faves. you’ll have to let me know what you think about it😊 thank you so much for being here!❤️

25:20 it depends why i'm dnfing !!! if it's problematic plotlines i do two strikes and you're out. if it's bad writing i'd like to say the halfway point is my dnf zone

It's interesting to me too at what page ppl dnf. I'm veeery new to reading. I haven't dnfed anything yet. I was this 🤏🏻 close to dnfing normal people by Sally Rooney, I kept going only bc it was a smaller book.
And I'm usually a silent viewer, I love your videos, your accent, it's so calming thank you for keeping me company when I need it ❤️

Hi Ellen, I've been watching your videos for a couple of weeks and I've loved all of them, you have such a calming vibe 😊
About DNF'ing books, I find that it usually happens around the 20-25% mark because at that point I've spent enough time with the book to know if I'm enjoying or not.
I've included Jade City on my September TBR but now I'm afraid of not liking it... I think I'll still give it a chance and see how it goes!

    • @bookswithellen
      @bookswithellen  Před 9 měsíci +1

i think 20-25% is a really good point - i think that’s usually what i make it to before i decide to dnf as well! and defo give jade city a chance, you never know if you’ll love it, just unfortunately wasn’t for me!
and thank you so much for being here, i’m so glad you like my videos!🤍

You gave Jade City such a good go, I wouldn't feel bad about DNFing at all. You do you 😊
I had a feeling you wouldn't enjoy it given the fantasy you seem to tend to enjoy but didn't want to say anything in case I was wrong and it would scare you off. Jade City absolutely doesn't hold your hand in the beginning, I was like you and struggled with character's names and just knowing what was going on in general. I did persevere and loved it in the end but it's not for everybody, and that's cool 😊
Two five stars and a DNF is not bad going for a week, I think. Glad you loved the other two so much 🥰

they’re at home DIY ones! i use Invisilash by Tatti Lashes - they’re like little eyelash clusters that you stick on with glue, they last about a week! i’m allergic to actual extensions so these have saved my life hahaha

@@bookswithellen I tend to like more complicated fantasy as well as fantasy romance but I’m not sure how I’ll feel about the more urban setting so that’s my biggest worry with it
