Apologies for taking so long to explain. Life challenges intervened in the interim. So my challenges with the bunnies happened last year. I was mixing some amendments into the soil in a raised bed I hadn't been using with the intent to get it started again. I was wearing headphones at the same time. But several times I could hear a squeak while I was mixing. At first, I ignored the sound having no idea what it could be. But after I heard it several times more, I removed my headphones to see if I could find out. The sound was down so deep that I asked the man who was helping me with some yardwork to come and see what it was. To make a longer story shorter, my helper found that a wild momma rabbit had given birth and buried her two babies (which is what they do to protect them from predators) in my raised bed. There is much more to the story including my getting in touch with a wild rabbit rescuer to find out what I was to do. I didn't know if I should leave them, bring them to her, etc. I followed her directions, and I think all turned out well. They eventually came to the surface and seem okay, but what did I know? I couldn't help but feel deep regret that I was wearing those headphones, which delayed my response. They eventually left the nest on their own, and I occasionally saw one of them lurking around in my yard near his/her birthplace. To this day, I do not know how my digging and turning impacted them. (My beds are now covered with hardware cloth to prevent another momma from giving birth in either of my raised beds.)
When you feel the pressure of new content creation, please let it go. I know that I enjoy your everyday-type discussions and videos of what you and your gardens are currently doing.
Your videos where you are working and we watch are some of my favorites. Very peaceful.

Regarding your bunny visitors: I’ve raised rabbits a few years ago and I allowed them many play hours out of their hutch. (I’m a crazy animal lover and looked for fresh nourishing food and I offered them extra exercise time.). I learned that they naturally love, love, love to dig! Your bird netting should help but they will quickly dig under for you ranunculus treats! 😂. I don’t know the best option but I’m sure that an idea will come with time. 👍🏽I also had an issue with my bunnies getting into my vegetable garden. Their first objective was to locate broccoli florets. Then after they found that special treat. Honestly, I decided to share my broccoli with my bunnies. Lol 😂 They were clueless about a 50 /50 percentage! I just had to laugh! I remember a few gardeners told me many years ago, be willing to share your treats with the wildlife. But I’m not that generous to share my ranunculus. 😂 It’s normally a fussy crop for me to grow. Best of luck!

My ranunculus and anemones are going out this weekend, into a made over car port hot house. My family fondly refers to it as Mom's garden getto rig. It works! I was gifted over 50 asiatic and oriental lilies that are already sending up strong green shoots. I'm 5b, and the nights are still dipping into the high 20s, so I am 6 weeks from my last frost date.
What on earth should I do with these ladies? I've potted them up so they dont languish. I'm concerned, given their vigor, that within the warmth of my home, they'll prematurely start budding out.
Any advice appreciated.

I am trying my hardest not to start too many seeds. The last 3 years, I have started enough seeds/plants to have a small flower farm, but I don't sell flowers. Lol. About 4 or 5 years ago, that was my plan, but then the pandemic hit and then flower farms popped up everywhere in my area. The stress of wanting to make money with flowers took away all my joy of gardening. So I am done with all of that nonsense and going back to gardening, for the love it. Happy to see a new video from you two!

@rootdesigncompany I'm laughing so hard right now. I posted this comment one day ago saying I am pulling back on seed starting. You reply today as I am in my greenhouse currently starting 11 different varieties of seeds. Oh we crazy gardeners, swear we will pull back on seed starting, but then when the seed sowing bug hits, it's impossible to fight off. I already have 4 shelving racks in the basement filled with baby seedlings and potted dahlias. But I do have to say, I am doing this just for the pure gardening joy. Not the stress of having to grow and sell.
As soon as I declutter and clean my outdoor space, I find I want to be out there and I see what needs to be done. Suddenly the motivation and inspiration is there.
We all say “this year- less weeds”😂

I’m so excited to see a new video from you. You are both such a grounding presence. I’m taking a big step back from growing All the Things and just focusing on a few. I’ve got ranunculus planted and they are doing well, despite being buried in snow and lows in the teens (or maybe it is because of the snow-I took down the frost cloth so the heavy snow didn’t destroy my hoops). I’m going to experiment with inter planting my dahlias in with my ranunculus. The thinking is that the dahlias will just get getting growing as the ranunculus are slowing down and then I can just leave them there to die back and maybe save the corms. Other than that, I’m only going to be growing zinnias, celosia, statice and maybe some cosmos. I have some perennials and shrubs that I’ll be able to use in bouquets as well. But I’m taking it back to what I find enjoyable and not overwhelming. ❤ (Zone 5a, Minnesota)

I am growing quite a few things (and feeling that I'm well-off that I have an early start to my season where I live) but I am focusing on some plants that are purported to be deer resistant because we have heavy deer pressure here in my little town. Foxglove, lupine, yarrow, nicotiana and rose campion are in that list. We'll see how it goes. In the past, I've found that if deer are hungry enough, they'll eat ANYthing. LOL. Grr. If anyone has suggestions on plants that are very deer resistant, please reply. Happy growing to everyone!
That sounds like a lovely list. I’m not sure what to recommend for deer resistant plants. Once they get a taste for the garden it’s an uphill battle from there. 😌

I’m growing new flowers, well new to me. Anemones and cloni cloni ranunculus. Some David Austin roses(12). I have hired 3 p/t employees and now have 3 volunteers in my second year of commercial flower farming. My 12,000 sq ft garden has doubled since I diversified into heirloom vegetables. Awaiting approval from NRCS to begin a high tunnel build. One new market that looks promising and another online mkt with local emails to the community. Trying to break even this year while enjoying my beautiful farm in Tennessee zone 7a.
PS I said I wasn’t going to buy any more dahlias but there are so many beautiful ones that I didn’t have yet!!!

A trick I started using with my art when I would hit a roadblock, is to photograph it with my phone and upload it to my computer where I then analyze it on screen. It is amazing how much easier it is to figure out what to do next, or how to adjust any myah parts simply by looking at it on screen rather than in person. It works so well that now I do this at the end of every session on a painting. I then analyze it before I start it again. This also gives you a comprehensive photo flow of each painting which can be helpful in the future.
That’s a great tip! I sometimes do this with bouquets.

Thanks so MUCH for sharing your information. I got two of your recommended books. I have planted hyacinths, tulips and daffodils (doubles) with some very early crocuses and muscari. I only started to advertise on instagram to my close friends to come by and pick up a small bouquet. I haven't gotten any bites but maybe soon. My summer project is to clean out the garage and make it very clean and neat so that I can work inside during the winter. That is a MUST. Thanks again. All the best to you both.

I love spending time with the two of you. Thank you for starting up your videos again! I’m in Northern California zone 9B and I am behind on nearly everything! I built a small house for my mom on my property and she moved in this week. I’m so happy! But now I need to turn my attention to the garden. So many seeds to plant. I fear I’ve missed the boat on some, but may do some experiments and see if I can get them going even though they will be late.I have a very long growing season so that’s in my favor.

One of my favorite tricks for when I have a creative block is listen to a good audio book while I'm working. I focus less on trying too hard and it flows a lot better.

Welcome back! I'm in 6b (central PA) and I have nearly all of my cool flowers in - except for rudbeckia which is growing extra slow for me this year. The bunnies ate my corn cockle, which I am trying for the first time this year. Seems like there's still enough green that they might make it. But I've got a little of everything: ranunculus, anemones, snaps, stock, sweet william, larkspur, sweet peas, strawflower, orlaya and a bunch more. I have 8 raised beds and I prepped them in the fall so they'd be ready for me this spring and I'm so glad I did that!
Those bunnies are on a rampage this year. Little buggars. Your garden sounds like a dream!

We (and our invasive English ivy) hear you. I also deeply regret planting a ground cover someone I once worked for gave me. We’ve been trying to exterminate it for years. 😅
In 8a Upstate South Carolina, I’m pinching back some dahlia tubers and starting the last ones, checking the weather forecasts to see if our traditional frost free date of April 15 will be accurate, and hovering over seedlings under lights. I did start too early even though I thought I was behind. I used to live in Central Texas where starting in January was normal because respectable plants do not like July, Augur, or September because of brutal heat. The joy of gardening in South Carolina is that it rains - unlike summers in Texas. I’m unboxing plants because I saw how lovely hellebores are and wanted more. I also bought more lavender’Phenomenal’ and ‘Cherry Brandy’ rudabeckia. Plants that are hard for me to start from seed. I also bought some David Austin roses. Good luck with your gardens and good luck fighting weeds.
April 15 is my last frost date too! (Arkansas) But I only just got my dahlias potted up so I’m on the late end of things. Don’t even have all my tubers yet. Best of success with your garden this year!

Really enjoying your email newsletter - I look forward to it! I'm feeling very behind this spring. All of my plans to get a head start and be super organized were derailed by a sudden and unexpected loss. In the middle of the rawness of sorrow and grief I'm finding just doing normal things to be really helpful - just putting one foot in front of the other. God is faithful and He will bring us through this time and bring healing and joy - and I know that my garden will help. I have some leggy tomatoes and too tall zinnias to care for right now. And that's enough.
We’re so sorry for your loss. Gardening helped both of us as we dealt with all of the emotions of moving & stating over. I know it’s not the same thing, but nature is healing. Sending you love.

Spring bulbs are on the very short side (I think in part due to the weather). Cool hardy annuals are bursting to get out of their trays but nights are still dipping down into the teens. Good thing I love to grow!
Every year throws its challenges at a gardener. If it’s not hail or rain or rabbits, it’s something else. :) I’ve been wanting to get some warm season annuals out but we have been having frosty night temps.

Your videos don't have to be anything more than an update of what you are doing - I can't tell you just how much I enjoy seeing your snippets of what is happening in your garden, what you've been up to - like a conversation with old friends catching up. Let go of the pressure to create new content - the visuals you create, and the beauty you share by filming it - is all that's needed.

2024 is my 3rd year growing flowers to sell. I have three nieces marrying this year (my sister has twelve adopted daughters - yes twelve!). We did the florals for our first wedding last year, and are planning to do the flowers for all three weddings this year. I'm so looking forward to it, and have watched and re-watched your videos as inspiration. Both of your weddings were SO incredibly beautiful and serve as a wonderful example to us all. Not just for floral inspiration, but inspiration of the type of community I wish we belonged to.

So happy to see you! I've been searching for you, but today there you were! I live in NE Indiana which is 6a. I have raised beds and also inground gardens all around my home. Today is a sunny day and I will be out enjoying my time cleaning up from the winter. I have done some cleaning all ready, but there is more to do in the in ground gardens. I have many different seeds starting, vegetable and flowers. It is so exciting to see life growing! I have signed up for your email and will be waiting with anticipation for your next CZcams video. I was so happy to see you post another video, although I'm a few days late! Central NY here, and expecting to get some cruddy weather again tomorrow and Thurs, and hoping that's going to be the end of it. Think spring. I have ranunculus in my tray that will be able to go out in a week or two, and I've started some seeds, with a bunch more to go.

As far as art and creativity go. I am learning water color and it is a muscle that you build. Truly, if you want to be good at something you have to do it 1000 times. Good advice on finishing where you start. Every painting goes through an ugly stage

I tend to do other things that are creative but have nothing to do with what I do. I’m still being creative but being something new to me, my brain is in newbie state and it gets me out of the negative state of “aggghh I’m not productive/creative”
You know, I heard someone say once (probably Rosita) that you need creative hobbies that exist just for their own sake. Not to make you money or to prove anything. Simply to be a creative outlet. Sounds like you’re on the right track. :)
Welcome back! I live in Connecticut. I bought seeds a year ago and haven't used them. Hopefully, they're still good (I refrigerated them). Cleaning out my gardens and trying to figure out where I'm going to put everything. Can you tell me what you put in your growing mixture?

That was a cabbage Rosita buried in the soil after harvesting in the fall. An experiment to see if it would keep over winter. :D
