  • Helping my sister-in-law Gabby go through her wardrobe and get rid of clothes she's no longer wearing, a lot of which don't work for her anymore or were from before or during her pregnancy and no longer fit.
Decluttering can be a challenging and emotional process so huge thanks to Gabby for letting me film and for sharing her thoughts and experiences so candidly. 💕

It’s so refreshing to finally see a “typical-sized” closet and a “reasonable-sized” declutter from someone relatable on CZcams (aka someone who isn’t a CZcams personality or makes unreasonable wages from social media). Drives me nuts when said people get rid of 90% of their clothes and then they restock it immediately in a sequence of hauls because that is essentially their “job”-consume, purge, consume. This is a much more realistic and believable process. Love it and love the dynamic you ladies have together. 🙂

I totally agree, the massive declutters and endless hauls on youtube are really sad to see and completely feed the fast fashion cycle.

It’s really nice seeing other people talk through their process. Also, she articulates her decisions well. The little things, like ‘this zipper gets caught in my hair’ is so valid and such a great reminder that these decisions are about practicality. The discussion about donating better quality items is also a great one for those who have a harder time parting with quality/more expensive items.

    • @gittevandevelde2208
      @gittevandevelde2208 Pƙed 5 lety +4

Yes! Those little things really make wether you like wearing something or not. I have a pair of jeans that have a zipper at the ankle, so they can be truly skinny and not have weird extra space at the ankle. You can unzip the zipper to get them over your heel. But I sit a lot when my legs crossed, so the side of my leg rests on my chair aka on the zipper and that HURTS and makes the jeans very uncomfortable. it's a stupid reason, but I just don't like wearing them because of that.

If you know someone who sews, maybe you could ask them, to put in an elastic insert instead. It could even be done by hand, really. There are also zippers, that are quite flat and less likely to cause you discomfort. I’m assuming, that yours is a chunky metal one, right?
If you really like the pants otherwise, it might be worth the trouble.

It's amazing how comfortable Gabby was doing this (especially in front of the camera!). Some people can't even admit their bodily changes to themselves to themselves, hold onto stuff for when they loose weight again etc. She also articulated her decisions so well! The little things like weird fabrics or zippers. She seems like a very mindful person. Great video, thank you! I hope to do this with my mom, because I know she has pieces in her wardrobe from 15 years ago that she hasn't worn in 10 and has multiple pieces on each hanger. I am obviously not going to force her, I hope she would be interested in doing this with my help. Really liked this video. My own wardrobe is so small I don't think I can cull anymore, because I would have to do laundry twice a week then, but I love love love decluttering.

Thank you for this video, it's nice to see real women decluttering. Im watching this as Im going through my clothes. Ive lost 70 pounds in the last few years and my body shape has changed, so 90% is being donated. I love your hair Gabby, so beautiful, makes me feel confident in my decision to let my hair go grey naturally. One more thing, please treat yourself and go get bra sizing done. I recently, finally, had bra sizing done, and found out I was wearing 38C instead of 34D that I am now. It's definitely worth it, especially after having children.

I started shopping at thrift stores mostly because of financial circumstances, and it was always Amazing finding well made items.Especially if they were priced reasonably. Being poor doesn't exactly leave you with tons of options for fashionable clothing, so great thrift store finds are always treasured and appreciated to this day. I am beyond grateful to the people who donate their really nice items to thrift stores, because it gives people like me, who aren't the most well off, a chance to dress well. So thank you. That part of the video touched me personally.

Its hard going through my closet and getting dressed everyday when im not comfortable in a lot of them and depressing to have so many things that dont fit me anymore. I'm not making the wage i used to to be able to go buy things that fit me now. So like my student days I'll be donateing most of it to salvation army thrift store and hoping to find a few things that I feel good in.

I've been slowly downsizing for a couple of years now. I think the trick is to transition slowly and see what you really wear and declutter over time. Then you don't miss things you never wore because it was a conscious process.

I'm not a mom but as i reached end of my 30s starting into 40s my ribcage is also seems wider. bras have never been sooo uncomfortable..either stabbed by a rougue underwire from a fairy new bra or the wire less sportsbra that seems to crush my ribs some days while other days are fine....providing the ineer cup hasn't dissapeared..gaining weight and body shape changing as I aged even with out having kids. I have a hard time parting with clothes now that ive changed careers and can no onger afford to go out and buy new items ..(id like to sell a few of the more expensive items to maybe come up with funds to go sfind a few pieces that fit me now....not the idea that i might be my size i WAS.and when i do shop rarely I still dont find anything that truely fits.Even my shoe size got 1/2 size bigger after years of being same size. I've already parted with many but still lots to go that was boxed up repeatedly for maybe fitting next season. I have had to sew up worn out thigh spots, but I look forward to finally having a closet that i can reach in and know everything fits well. what happens when nothing fits...i'm left with the 2 pairs of yoga pants and mens tops just cuz they fit....but not feel great wearing them outside of kickin around home.

I still haven’t switched from summer to winter wardrobe, because I dread this very process. I know, there’s a lot of stuff lurking, that will never fit me again (sighs)...and it’s so depressing to go through the process of trying beloved pieces on, just to have to discard them. I wish, I had at least someone close, I could gift them to...maybe that would feel better then just putting them into clothes collection. I know, they‘ll finally find a new owner that way, too, but it just feels like ‚throwing them away‘ to me.

      My Green Closet
Oh well, you get so little money for used clothes/shoes - unless it’s specific brands people look for...and most of my stuff is good quality, but obscure brands or tailored for me - it’s often not worth the time investment of making pictures and listing them and packaging and sending...
And since I‘m not desperately poor, I rather give them to the Humana shops, where the proceeds go to good cause. It’s really more of a psychological thing. These are mostly clothes, I would love to wear again...they just don’t fit me anymore. I have the ‚closet full of (great) stuff, but nothing to wear‘ thing going on.
I need to clean out and get one of these apps that help you organize your stuff, so I can make smarter choices about what things to buy new. I don’t necessarily want to go down to a capsule wardrobe, but whatever I‘m doing now, is definitely not working, because time and again, I find nothing suitable to wear in my very full closet 😏

I hear ya girl. Going through the same thing over here..I have donated a lot of clothes already...favorites i saved then ended up giving to friends....then feel horrible when they say omg thats huge thats wayyy too big for me....and I die a little inside cuz i wish it still fit me or even buttoned up......I've saved so many things just to be able to give them to someone I know and secretly hoping i might fit into it before they finally come over in 6 months lol but i need a change i'd like to beable to sellthe more expensive items that are basically in new conditon and worn maybe once or twice because iwas mostly in uniform at the time...and dress up occasions were few. but i saved them because part of me hates shopping because i no longer find things that fit..only sort of fit...and the cycle continues. So i need to get his stuff out.I wish i had a willing buddy to come help me out..just sit there...not making comments on how huge my pants are when i hold em up to decide...ps those are the only ones that fit me now......then more comments if i'm even trying to lose the weight meanwhile asking if i have any beer around...no I don't but i have tea.....a not judgemnetal positive vibe friend that doesnt make me not invite anyone over anymore, but helping me make decisions on what FITS ME. oh wow clothing is my hardest thing to downsize cuz it is an emotional sting for me. It was easier to downsize when things actually fit..and i could just decide on its color or style and leave the emotion out of it.

I can see why this is depressing to you, Carmen. If you are in a mode where you don’t like yourself due to not liking how you look, this kind of , “embracing the body you have now “ would seem depressing.
I struggle with weight and have been all over the place with it mentally, including where you are.
Is it possible to accept, for now , what you look like, and how your body looks while at the same time, keep working on those health goals?
I personally found it depressing to have clothes that made me feel shame and self- hate, or like I really am trying to pretend I am size I am not. Finding something with the kind of fit that makes me feel comfortable and beautiful is a keeper. Having clothes that remind me that I am not the , “ right” size and maybe someday I will look good again, is not a helpful strategy for me.
I hope this finds you being kind, gentle and respectful of yourself today!
