    SMOE, my man, I owe you a thank you. So thank you! My wife and Chillrinz and I just bought a new house. I, as the poppa, only had 3 things I needed. One- a good roof
    Two- recently updated heat/air
    &3- space out back for a garden graff wall. That's something you and I spoke on a while back and it changed my life. I can't wait to paint legally and pass my skills down to my kids. They're already a part of the culture/arts.
    Anyway, you inspired me and it literally effected my house hunting and final sale. I appreciate you, a lot SN. You're inspirational on many levels. Big ups my G

  • @SReject
    @SReject Před 4 lety +27

    About the canvas acting weird: I know you put a blue base coat down but did you use any sort of primer, like gesso before hand?
    The reason I ask is that without a canvas-specific primer, what happens is the canvas fibers absorb the paint immediately, causing the fibers to swell with the liquid within the paint. Then as the liquid dries off and the fibers contract micro-cracks in the paint occur which causes the paint to dull and appear spotty.
    And just watched to the very end; if you plan to do more canvas paintings, when you send them off, roll them so paint side is out. Rolling with paint-side inward puts the paint under compression and can cause it to flake/chip. Where as with paint-side out, the paint is under tension, of which most spray paints have a bit of elasticity.

    • @DjAlanBarratt
      @DjAlanBarratt Před 4 lety +1

      great reply, maybe also mix the base coat with pva glue to help seal the canvas? also did you lacquer the paint after?

    • @kevincooper5656
      @kevincooper5656 Před 3 lety

      @@DjAlanBarratt It was a really good reply @SReject - While he was painting the blue background on the canvas all I kept thinking was, " I wonder why he's not putting any gesso down, first?" And when he started having his problem w/the color(s) I kept thinking, " Yeah, he should have put gesso down, first." (lol) But we live and learn, right? Big up to you and @SReject for offering your advice to Smoe Nova and for confirming my feelings on it too. We're all better for it.

    This takes me back to 95, when I bought my first house and also got married, one of the reasons I choose the house was because I could board the back fence to paint, sadly life got in the way, and I didn't use it as much as I would have liked.
    As I've recently started painting again after a 22year hiatus, and after seeing this vid, I'm really trying to work out how I can get another wall up in my garden again 🤔🤔 big up Smoe your commentary always makes me smile ✌

    The struggle is real! Haha I've painted large raw canvases like this before. They definitely don't like spray paint. However THE KEY is to give it a good 3 or 4 coats of bucket paint before spray painting. The canvas will absorb the first two coats of paint almost entirely, and then by the 3rd coat, it loses all absorbtion and it's like painting on a normal solid surface again.

    Great life lesson that's applicable in all aspects of life. Work through the problem. Frustration, fear of failure etc. All those negative thoughts can cripple you or cause failure/giving up. But, keep it moving, think the moves out, and you'll prevail. Or at least grow as a person, or in this case, as an artist. Word

    Hello Smoe! I liked drawing since i was a kid and I got into graffiti and murals last year thanks to you and some friends, I think that your style is one of the best looking styles out there, and you saying that "its not unique" and that anyone can draw letters like you is extremely humble! big up to you for that!
    I'm not going to ask you to draw my tag or something like that, but at 3:35 you say that you want to make tutorials about graffiti lettering in your style, really looking forward to it, hope you make a video someday about how to draw letters like you, I don't even care if it will be in full German and have subtitles on like I have the bell on

    My recommendation when working with raw canvas...you should prime and sand 3x. The 'dirty look' is probably from the canvas soaking up all of the paint.

    a tip for that wall (if havent allready done that) is to build a little roof on the top or prime it really well so that rain cant be sucked up, have seen this on alot of legal walls that the woord sucks up rain and after a year or two, the paint layers start to have boubles on them since the water has nowhere else to go. after tre or four years paint will start to come of, and that i never fun if u like a flat/clean wall.

    had the same problem with a canvas that a friend of mine wanted to make for him. some canvases hold the colour and you cant cover it or paint over, specialy if the colour is lighter. but for sure great job and very good deal with the wood constructor
