Total Drama: The Later Seasons in Review (EAM)

- From 2012 to 2015, the Total Drama franchise continued to appear on TV in North America, but changed significantly. Characters, locations, season length and even the format of the show were changed up substantially the longer it went on. It’s easy to be all nostalgic for the first 3 seasons compared to the newer ones, but was there any worth to these new ideas?

My Opinion on the Later Seasons
Revenge of the Island: Actually one of my favorites; I didn't mind the drop in animation quality too much; the characters all felt enjoyable (minus Staci) and I loved Dakota's arc up until she got mutated. The couples were written very well; I'm not too big on the love at first sight cliche, but Zoey and Mike were great this season, and Zoey accepting Mike is one of my favorite scenes in the franchise. The pacing is very good for a 13 episode season with an all new cast. I'm glad that they made some of the original contestants cameo so that the new characters didn't feel too overwhelming. Scott was a good antagonist, even if his strategy was flawed. Overall, a great season.
All Stars; By far the worst season in my opinion; the characters felt unbearable to watch, and Mal had no strategy or motivation. He was glaringly obvious and a terrible antagonist. He was very funny, and his voice was great, but that doesn't make a good antagonist. Everyone felt allergic to logic, and Zoey was so dumb this season. He's your boyfriend! How does ALEJANDRO figure out about Mal before you? In Revenge of the Island, it was more tolerable because she didn't know him that well and I highly doubt she knew much about Multiple Personality Disorder. And the challenges felt super lazy. Episodes 1, 6, 2, 4, and 7 actually had pretty good ones, but the rest either felt really weak, barely referenced the challenge, or were just boring. Like, I could probably complete the Obsta-Kill Course and I'm not even that athletic. And all of the merge episodes were flat out bad or disappointing.
Pahkitew Island; Light years better than All Stars but not as good as ROTI, WT, TDI, or RR. The season could have been better if Chris had been upfront about the island being artificial. Imagine all of the cool challenges we could've had! The challenges we got were mostly bland, but the character interactions were great for the most part. I hate how Skave ended, though, and Scarlett was ruined by the twist in Scarlett Fever. Sugar was a pretty weak antagonist, but Shasmine was a good plotline, and the twin plot was pretty original. Beardo, Rodney, and Leonard were just there to be early boots, though. They were obviously struggling with teen stereotypes, so they just said f@#% it, we'll just go wild. And this is definitely the weakest cast of a Total Drama season, but overhated.
Ridonculous Race: The new format was refreshing, and the cast was actually pretty solid. Don was way better than Chris as a host, and the challenges were probably the best ones. The pacing was pretty good, and the Ice Dancers were great villains. Emma and Kitty felt like Amy and Sammy done a LOT better, and Emma and Noah felt like Sky and Dave done better. Owen and Kitty playing matchmaker was great, the Goths were iconic, and MacArthur and Sanders had great character development. The main flaws are how long the Dater/Hater plotline and the Best Friends to Lovers plotlines went on. I also think it was great that even some of the teams that were eliminated early were able to get small arcs, like the Vegans, Fashion Bloggers, Geniuses, and Mother and Daughter.
I think All Stars was when the animation quality dropped cuz TDROTI animation is really smooth and bouncy.
@@h3atherbetter Yeah I never really noticed in in Revenge of the Island, but it's confirmed to be there. AS was definitely a more noticeable change.
I genuinely enjoyed every episode of Ridonculous Race cuz it was one of the best
I don't feel like 13 episodes was enough for Revenge of the Island. They needed more, especially when you consider that Ezekiel felt more fleshed out than Staci in Island.
For me TDROTI is not bad All stars was not as good as revenge of the island but better than pahkitew but pahkitew in my opinion is the worst season because I don't really like the new cast
Revenge of The Island is 2nd Underrated(Action is 1st Underrated)
All Stars and Pakithew Island is the Dark Era of Total Drama
but The Ridonculous Race is the light that brought us out of the Dark Era, like Ridonculous Race is The Last Epic Chapter of The Total Drama Series

I mainly like RR due to not only having some of the old cast back but also is more realistic and doesn't have these dumb mutant monsters or an artificial island with robots.

Something very interesting about the Adversity Twins - they describe themselves of whatever's right before cursed, and their placing in the first challenge in Morocco and their overall placing in the show is twelfth. They literally place just before unlucky thirteen. I don't think I was the first person to notice this, but I can't remember where it was pointed out to me.
As a matter of fact, I wonder if I don't come off as Zoey as I think I am on the inside. I don't have a Commando streak or as much confidence as she gains, but I am self-conscious, desperate to make friends and a bit gullible (yeah, not ashamed to admit some forms of optimism are damaging), so yeah, I identify with her.
And as a side note, I was stoked when New Zealand was confirmed as an RR location before the show came out, but I found Maori or Less underwhelming. They also pronounce Maori wrong. But then they also mispronounced "Geelong", so I guess they would.

@Yoyoooooooo Oh - I think that was more about the Ice Dancers when the lava rock cursed them. They were in fourth place three times. The twins even say that it was like all the bad luck they usually get went to another team.
I definitely feel like the 13 episode seasons are the biggest set back with the later seasons. There's just not enough time to get to know everyone, you know. RR benefited from being a full length, and I'm deeply disappointed that the new seasons will go back to 13 episodes.

TDI: Basic Straining and The Sucky Outdoors (I just hate that episode)
TDA: Super Hero-ld (I also love Geta A Clue and Crouching Court) and Mutiny on the Soundstage (lackluster finale)
TDWT: Planes, Trains and Hot air mobiles (just amazing) and Picnic at Hanging Dork (forgettable)
TDROTI: Ice Ice Baby (idk it’s just good) and … Idk, they were all pretty enjoyable. Maybe Runaway Model?
TDAS: Evil Dread (only one I could rewatch) and Sunday Muddy Sundae (plus every episode coming after)
TDPI: Twinning Isn’t Everything (Amy’s elimination is perfect) and Hurl and Go Seek (just, ew)
TDRR: Bahamarama (wow) and New Beijining (it’s not bad, just forgettable)
I think as the show went on it got more and more mean-spirited and dehumanized its characters more. For me the last straw was when Ezekiel became a feral creature, but they continued this by turning both Alejandro and the one Ginger guy into robots. He's used to be characters that I felt I could relate to and grow attached to but with such disgusting terrifying things happening to them it's really hard.

Personally, I was so hyped about pahkitew island when it came out I loved it, but I was really young then. I re-watched it about 3 months ago and all of the writing just seemed hateful for no reason even on the better characters.
HOW IS NOBODY GONNA ADDRESS THAT HE THINKS EMMA AND NOAH IS THE BIGGEST RELATIONSHIP TUMOR OF THE SEASON ITS LITERALLY ONE OF THE BEST COUPLES IN THE SHOW 😭

Just want to put this out there, at the end of the video you were concerned about the new season being 13 episodes, but recently Jennifer Pertsch has confirmed that the new season's will be 13 episodes each and be part of the same show, and will air back to back, meaning they will most likely be part of the same cast and eliminations, so it might be split up into Merge eliminations and Pre-merge eliminations.
Did they say anything about the second season bring back the older casts? I know there is a new cast for the first new season but not the second

As some who's watched The Amazing Race, the non-elimination rounds are just a staple of the show.
Also, the host for The Ridonculous looks a bit like Jon Montgomery the host of The Amazing Race Canada
Yeah but they only have three or four at most on the show. Nine is wayyyyyyyy too excessive (especially to make one leg a double-elimination anyway). Might as well bring back a team of the old cast to help mitigate the non-eliminatons.

This time my favorites were definitely Zoey, Mike, Jo, Dawn, Shaun and Jasmine. For RR, I loved the Cops, the Goths, the Sisters, the Father and Son team.

I personally think that the answer to this question is yes & no. Yes, in the aspect that it still at least *kinda* feels like a reality show, in that the characters are still reasonable human stereotypes, more or less. The season also feels somewhat decently paced (at least, to me), even with the shorter season length still cramping the amount of time for character interaction each episode. Chris was starting to lean more towards the insane side around the end of World Tour, and I think this season is where he leans much further into that territory. He's not fully insane yet (that'll change in All-Stars and onward, though), but he's certainly not right in the head. However, even with that in mind, he's still a decent host.
However, as I mentioned earlier, the answer to this is yes AND no. So, let's talk about the answer in the 'No' aspect. I feel as though this season was where the writers started to have trouble with original characters for this new season, which is probably a big reason as to why there are only 13 episodes in this and following seasons, as coming up with 22 original characters is already difficult on its own, but when you need to come up with ANOTHER 22 original characters, it's pretty difficult to do so while trying to avoid making a character with a similar or exact same personality as one from the first generation of characters. Like I mentioned earlier, Chris was heavily teetering on the insane side in this season, often exploding random things and would sometimes even put the contestants in dangerous situations purposely for no reason other than what seemed like pure shock value.
I could go into this more, but it's really late when I'm typing this and I'm tired and can't really think of any other reasons to talk about off the top of my head right now.

I feel like the casts of later seasons became more and more unrealistic each time. They really nailed personalities from TDI, everyone seemed authentic if not a stereotype. But later seasons, each character just seems to become more and more outrageous. I was introduced to total drama when all stars was on Netflix and I prefer season 4s and 5 1/2 characters to its predecessors and though I prefer world tour to 1 and 2 I do prefer the 2nd gen to the 1st and 3rd gen.
10:19 How can animation be dated. The characters are animated in flash and are rigged. Flash puppets have always been the worst way to animate. Hand drawn is always superior. Also it doesn't make sense to compare a reality show parody to an action show spoof like TMNT.

The Ghost and Molly McGee looks fantastic and that is Toon Boom Harmony, Teen Titans Go is flash and it looks super good, The Snoopy Show has really good animation and that is Toon Boom Harmony.

The seasons that does their best in developing the characterization arcs of certain characters are TDA & TDWT since these characters arent no longer their typical walking all over the top stereotypes that defined their traits in TDI to beginning with.
TDA improved DJ Leshawna Heather Lindsay Justin Harold & Beth, while TDWT improved Lindsay Noah Tyler Owen Sierra Cody Alejandro and above all the true Queen B aka Heather.
As a matter of fact, the beginning of TDI was all about the introduction of the 22 original generation campers having each unique identity traits of their own stereotypes that you can relate to them as real life teenagers that you can see in the reality.
In TDROTI the newbie contestants are well established as characters with good developing in the 13 season episodes format for a short time even though their is a balance of screen time for everyone in the season 4, while TDAS was doing their worst in the name of characters being ruined and acting out of character for their behaviour as well as they follow their previous arcs in the past got old really quick.
The less said about the cast of TDPI contestants the better since not all of them are well developed & established well as characters since their traits are way too non realistic as they are typical walking all over the top stereotypes is way too overexagerrating to watch.
TDRR does his job very well in developing all of the teams that have their happy endings and a conclusion to their storylines and arcs during the race that end up them on a good high note and the most developed characters from TDRR are Noah Geoff Owen Goths Kitty Emma MacArthur Ice Dancers Carrie & Devin.
TDROTI main plots and topics are:
- The theme of the season is about the toxic waste
- Pacing of the season is good
- Love triangle with Anne Maria Mike & Zoey
- Jo's conflicts with Lightning Brick & Cameron
- Scott's villainy was well executed
- Scott & Fang running gag interaction
- Mike with Zoey and Dakota with Sam relantioships
- Cameron & Lightning are the finalists
- Trio friendship with Cameron Mike & Zoey
- Cameron's development from a bubble boy to IronMan in the finale was epic
- Dawn B & Staci served as fodder characters to elimination as they did nothing
I honestly feel like Dawn and B had more potential to them but in a cast where that can be said for everyone but Staci we had to have a couple characters eliminated before they could develop more.
@@TekRonan the main reason why Dawn and B served their role as fodder characters because they need to establish Scott's villain status early in the season since they dont have any notable interactions with anyone to beginning with and they didnt even appear on the season who was named originally as Total Drama Reuloaded while being in the production of 2011.

The first 7 episodes of all stars (besides moon madness) were actually okay. However, every single merge episode was awful

tbh i have a lot of nostalgia for revenge of the island and i think almost all characters are great, with exception of Staci.
Same. I still prefer the OG cast but 11/13 contestants in the Revenge cast are great. I'm of course excluding Staci and Anne Maria. Besides, that's better than Pahkitew where only six characters(Shawn, Sky, Jasmine, Samey, Max, and Ella) are even likable to me. Or All-Stars which committed character assassination on everyone in that season but Scott, Zoey, Jo, and Gwen(and that's if we ignore how out of character Gwen felt in the episodes 2-5).
