Zero Turn Mower Blade Change and Spindle Lube - Troy Bilt Mustang 50

- After more than a year of use on my Troy Bilt (sometimes misspelled Troy Built) zero turn riding lawn mower, the quality of the cut was starting to get noticeably ragged. I reckoned it was time to sharpen the mower blades, and at the same time grease the spindles on the mower deck.
After removing the mower deck and inspecting the blades it was evident that they weren't worth saving, therefore a blade change was performed instead. The bearings of the spindles were also re-greased.
I don't have a lot of experience in mower repair and maintenance, especially with a mower of this type. In order to find out what to do I referenced videos on the subject. My only concern is that just because someone makes a video on mower maintenance it doesn't mean they are doing it correctly. They may have learned from someone else doing it wrong, then they add their own incorrect information, then the next person does the same and so on, therefore, compounding the stupid. I hope I'm not compounding the stupid.

In this video I showed one of the objects I accidentally ran over. What's the worst thing you've run over with your mower?
Manhole cover
@@mattt198654321 Yikes! That beats the pipe I hit. Thanks for sharing.
twigs fall from trees all the time in Oklahoma and I run them over all the time. Had my deck down on notch lower than normal and went over the top of the water meter. There is a piece of plastic on top of the cover that got shaved down. Sure that helped my blades. Ran over a baseball one time.

GLORIOUS!!! Great video, I needed this and nobody else did a how-to for this type of mower! THANK YOU for posting!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful. I never thought to check and regrease the sealed bearings. I might look into that in the off season.
You've got a Cub Cadet, right? Most likely they are the same spindles as on my Troy Bilt (both made by MTD).
You don't really need to lift the mower to remove or replace the deck. With mine (a 42), once the deck is disconnected, I drive off to the left, then when I'm finished doing the maintenance, I drive back over the deck to the right, then reconnect. Being a zero turn, it's fairly easy to do.
And, if you have an old swing set frame, you can hang the deck up on it with chains, ratchet straps, ropes, whatever you have, and it makes it a bit easier than fighting the anti-scalping wheels with one hand while you try to work with the other. Right now, I've got a frame made out of three 4x4s with eye hooks that I use. It's more of a permanent fixture whereas, when I used the swing set frame, I could move it around to different parts of the property, depending on what I needed it for. Take care.
Good video! Not sure we have the exact same one, but it looks almost identical to mine, on mine if you look on the underside of the seat you can find the part numbers for commonly replaced parts, as well as a diagram of the belt properly installed.
The easiest way to put the belt back on the center pully is to lift the panel your feet rest on. It gives you full access to the top of the deck.
Thanks for the video! Very helpful.
How did the wd40 coating work for you keeping the underside of the mower deck free from grass sticking?
There's definitely less buildup than normal, and what does stick comes off with barely any effort.
Do you still have this mower.
What number did you cut that on it look good
I believe it was on 3.
My blades after EVERY season are quite ragged as well. Typically, I just toss em and buy another cheap set to destroy the following season
I managed to mangle my first set within a season. Second set same thing. Third set after a season looks much better. Either I'm learning to be more careful or I've already hit and removed everything killing my blades.
flip the deck up on its end

Sand it what eats away at the backside if the blades.
Must be all those huge ant hills I keep running over. I don't see them until the mower scalps all the grass from the top. Dirt and ants flying everywhere. Some of them are almost as wide as the mower deck.
