Nice Video. Thanks so much for the instruction.
Here's the procedure as mentioned in the tutorial
    1. Turn the key on (Not to start the engine)
    2. Press to disengage the Parking Brake
    3. Turn the key off
    4. Turn the key on again (Not to start the engine)
    5. Foot on the brake
    6. Pull 3 times and push 3 times the Parking Brake
    7. Press 1 more time and hold the Parking Brake 'til the sound of motors stop
(Parking Brake is now flashing and on Dash the Park sign is also flashing)
    ---------------------------------------------
At this point, you're ready to service the brakes
    ---------------------------------------------
    Once service is done~
    1. Turn the key on (Not to start the engine)
    2. Pull the Parking Brake up and Hold
(You will hear the motors whine)
    3. Once motors stop, you can release the Parking Brake
    4. Pull the Parking Brake up 1 more time and you're done.

You definitely would be in alot of Toyota dealerships. Most of their mechanics are complete morons. Just did brakes on my Rav4 Prime at 90,000 miles. Up till then, Toyota dealership had serviced it, and at the last service, they recommended brakes all around because they noted fronts were almost metal to metal and rears had less than 2mm of pad left. I chose to do brakes myself because I am a former mechanic. When I did the fronts, the outer pad was almost metal to metal as they said, but the inner pad had 70% pad left, because the slide pins had frozen probably 40,000 miles ago, and Toyotas mechanics failed to notice this during multiple (8) services. Also, the rears had at least 50% pad left and didn't need replaced. I replaced them anyway because I went with carbon ceramic brakes and wanted the fronts to match rears as far as stopping power.

Dear AMD, if you happen to read this, I would appreciate your feedback. Recently I replaced the brake pads on my 2021 RAV4, but ended up bypassing this procedure altogether. Saw another video where the guy disconnected the electronic parking brake cylinder from power and removed it physically from the brake caliper. Seemed like a reasonable method; so I tried it and it worked rather smoothly. The main reason was that I didn’t want to rent/purchase a brake caliper compression tool (time constraints). Once the electronic brake unit is removed, you can twist the piston by an Allen wrench (from the same place where the electronic brake connects to it) and compress the cylinder from outside. Since the replacement everything seems to work like before. So I think this was a safe and reasonable method. On the other hand, since your video and many others recommend this method of placing the electronic parking brake in service mode, I want to be sure that it’s not the only safe method. Once again, your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 🙏

Thanks for the video! Unfortunately it doesn't work on 2016 Lexus RX350. Maybe it works for later year models, but not for 2016.
But there's a workaround that I discovered accidentally on the brink of desperation. It doesn't include disassembing the actuator, focing the motor with external 12VDC source and other risky business suggested in other videos on CZcams.
    Here's how you do it:
    Remove both rear wheels.
Engage parking brake (pull the button up)
Disconnect the parking brake wire from ONE of the calipers, e.g. driver's side.
Now, release the parking brake by pushing the button.
You'll hear long whining sound on the OTHER caliper, i.e. passenger side. Then dash will say "parking brake failure, go see dealer!". Apparently, when you disconnect one caliper, the computer senses its absence, thinks "OMG, malfunction!" and just in case fully retracts the other motor! Bingo! That's exactly what you need!
Now you go and do the brake job on that side like you'd normally do. When you done passenger side, reconnect driver caliper, and engage parking brake. The computer will see that both motors are present and engage the parking brake as usual.
Then you do it the other way around - disconnect the passenger caliper and push the button to release the parking brake. The computer will again think "OMG! Failure!" and retract the other (driver's) motor all the way.
Do the driver's side brake job, reconnect the passenger's, done!
    Hope that helps!

After many failed attempts an important lesson was learned. On the 2021 keyless car which have the same functionality. However. Note that on Keyless car
1 push of button is Not ON, it is Accessory mode.
    1. Must be ON via the 2nd push of the button .
    Important on KEYLESS button Ignition
    1. Do as stated. On release E brake with foot on Brake turn off
    2. Turn On foot On brake now. Three pulls and Three pushes of button
Now Now Now REALEASE. Foot off brake. Now hold button Down and Now hear motor rewinding.
FOOT MUST be off Brake during the holding down of button. This is trick on keyless car.
    Now get 100 Percent success

I just did this rodeo on my Camry. Let me just say this do not do it this way if you’ve already got the pads out of the holder or you’ll possibly end up having fits. This tricky little fella isn’t as easy to operate as it sounds here although it looks so simple. What can happen without the pads in place is your wind it out to where that little insert captive nut comes off of the threaded stud inside the puck. When it does that there’s for a little guides that run laterally down the inside of the puck and that nut will fall off the end of it. When you do that it’s not going back without taking it off putting it in the vice because it tends to snag on a little bitty shoulder radius at the very Outer edge of those 4 guides . All the kings horses and all the kings men aren’t gonna push that Puppy back in Because it’ll snag on that very little radius and of course you can’t see any of this to know what it’s doing or holding it.
So if you’re going to do this make sure the pads are in place or if you’re alone better yet take one of your 12 V battery tools and make up at to lead simple jump or disconnect The plug on the caliper and do it manually with the jumpers where you can see exactly which way the piston is moving. You’ll find the battery method shown on here someplace and it makes a lot more sense as you can see what you’re doing because this little guy isn’t always go in the direction it’s supposed to apparently. I couldn’t even get that nut to take the threads when I ground away on it either direction but ran it long enough bouncing on the end it suddenly seem to reverse on its own which was the only way I could get it back in. I still haven’t figured out yet but it wound right back in.
If you do have to play with one of these Calipers and take it apart be very careful with that rubber boot. If you have to take that piston out it takes two people and a vise holding it to spread that boot Both ways at once to slide that stupid piston in place. It’s made all the harder by the fact that that boot seems to be glued or manufactured into the caliper itself it is very VERY THIN compared to what you’re typically dealing with. It will tear very easy so you can’t use a punch or awl to help you spread it hence the friend which makes it slide tight on.
To make a jumper wires so you can operate this Saucier cordless tool battery it’s pretty easy and you’ll probably be needing it again and again as everybody uses these brake styles today. Just take 2 to 4 feet of old speaker wire or anything like it and 2 each male and female spade crimp on connectors. Females and one in males on the other. The females are way too big for the Camray connector but they slide right on nicely using them sideways on one side only. They stay in place very well and are easy to deal with. The spades just go in the two battery slots on my Milwaukee 12 v tool battery perfectly.

because technology. We've pretty much peaked in terms of mechanicals, manufacturers need "new" features to sell, just a gimmick for marketing and sales. "Automatic electronic" sells more than "peasant manual". Also automation, people are stupid and make errors, so taking out the human in the equation makes it "safer". Most electronic parking brakes automatically engage when parked, this not only saves transmission life, but saves the car from rolling. Now you understand.

I tried with my foot on the brakes many times before I looked elsewhere and found info that at least on my car specifically you have to let off the brake pedal before the final push and hold. Thanks for yet another very instructive and valuable video. You are the go-to source for Toyota / Lexus owners and we're very fortunate! I own a 2017 LX570 which has a push button starter, no key. I had new brakes installed by my mechanic's garage, but they weren't able to get the parking brake working properly after the brake service. I tried to follow your instructions from this video, but never got the exact sounds that you described. Yet, afterwards the parking brake works fine and somehow I goofed up and it worked! Can you please do a short video or reply to cover this subject for vehicles with push button starting? Many thanks.

Why Are the New Cars all Going to Electrical Park Brakes? How does one stop in an Emergency situation? With no Power? I think Transportation and safety board should be mandating Emergency brakes with a Cable should be standard in All cars. That Hand Brake will save lives. Esp for those of us living in the rust prone area.

It saves time when putting the car together as it eliminates some parts and increases cabin space and it’s also a safety issue (people would not use the hand brake and the wires would rust and get stuck, or people were not applying it firmly).

  • @johndorrell1

It would have been nice for step-by-step written instructions under SHOW MORE. We learned only the second time through to start with key ON, door open, etc. In any case, this is great-to-have information. Not said, but assumed, is that merely having the EPB OFF isn't sufficient to service the brakes. We'll guess that Brake Replacement Mode winds it in farther/all the way. Knowing that this mode is finicky will make us feel less stupid if at first we don't succeed. Thanks! I've been waiting for this one.
