I personally think that Star Trek: The Motion Picture is Jerry Goldsmith's masterpiece. All of his works are good, of course, but I don't think anything can compare to the TMP score. It is absolutely breathtakingly brilliant. It is an absolute crime that it did not win the Academy Award for best score.
@@pablomartorelli4173, First Contact is a good soundtrack but it is not even in the same league as the TMP soundtrack, which ranks as one of the greatest film soundtracks in history. Один из самых лучших композиторов в истории голливуда. Мне нравятся его музыкальные произведения написанные для таких научно фантастических фильмов как чужой , вспомнить все, звездный путь.

@@deloysterns Check out "Fireworks: A Celebration of Los Angeles" also by Jerry Goldsmith which could be a companion score for Soaring Over California.
Goldsmith composed flawless, superb music for The Swarm(1978) and Inchon(1982). He also composed music for the Elizabeth Hartman tear-jerker A Patch of Blue(1965).
My absolute favorite is "The Wind and the Lion". It evokes so many exotic flavors to its own epic contents. But indeed, it is difficult to just choose one when you have an entire palette of colorful and outlandish music Jerry did compose. Like John Williams and others before and after him, he was a genius in applying the right tonalities, rhythms, choral and exotic instrumentation to every movie he scored. I could name movies such as "Logan's Run", "Rio Lobo", "Patton" & "Macarthur", "The Omen Trilogy", "Damnation Alley" and indeed his many scores to the Star Trek Movie and TV Series franchise, just to give a slight flavor and taste to what Jerry Goldsmith was able to dish up during his very long career, not forgetting his various Jazz compositions for earlier movies. In my humble opinion, he belongs in that kind of musician's altar such as Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Miklos Rozsa, Elmer Bernstein and Maurice Jarre, just to cite a few. All groundbreaking musicians who knew how to fire up your own emotions while watching a movie. Jerry and his colleagues have left us with a plethora of magnificent music and a true legacy for many musicians and composers to come to learn from. And the story continues...
I could not possibly choose one single score as my favourite of his, that would not do justice to his immense skill and body of work. A list of my favs is probably his total scoring credits. But some quick go-to scores of his if I need a bit of musical "me time" would be, in no particular order, The Mummy, Star Trek First Contact, Gremlins 2, Total Recall, First Knight, The Edge and Russia House. Jerry Goldsmith was such a versatile and exploratory composer, I still get amazed by his scores time and again and still don't know anywhere close to all of them, and it's a terrible shame he left our world long before his time.
My all time favorite is "Sleeping with the enemy" theme. Watched the movie again, and the theme itself makes it one of my favourite movies! I also like the Mummy theme ☆ He has real talent.
Islands in the Stream. It has nothing in common with any of the scores on this list, but I stand by it. Islands in the Stream is simply sublime. And what's more, Jerry himself often cited it among his personal favorites.
BLOODY CHRISTMAS FROM LA CONFIDENTIAL is the 2nd best score from KING Jerry however the BEST Score and scariest piece ever from any composer is Jerry´s OSCAR rewarded piece from OMEN! The most scary score EVER! RIP Jerry Goldsmith. Wonderful chart from you The TopFilmScore! 😁😀💪👍👍👍
Impossible to pick just one favorite score by Goldsmith. 'The Final Conflict', 'Under Fire', 'The Russia House', 'Capricorn One', 'First Blood',.......I could go on and on. 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' though may be objectively his single greatest achievement.
My favorite movie scores by Jerry Goldsmith are Escape from the Planet of the Apes, In Like Flint and Breakheart Pass. My favorite TV theme score is Barnaby Jones.
My Top 10 Favorite Jerry Goldsmith Movies are: 1. Poltergeist (1982) 2. Alien (1979) 3. Gremlins (1984) 4. Mulan (1998) 5. Star Trek: the Motion Picture (1979) 6. The Mummy (1999) 7. Total Recall (1990) 8. Basic Instinct (1992) 9. The Omen (1976) 10. Rambo: First Blood (1985)
I'm Glad I got to see him at Carnegie Hall when he played there. Was Wonderful. I had the tickets to see him in Japan, but things got sour for me here in the states and couldn't make it. My Japanese friend sent me the program guide and peripherals.
I got to see Jerry conduct the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra in the early 90s and he started off with the opening of ALIEN as you do here. Will never forget it.
Alien. Best movie soundtrack ever! Added so much to the movie in ways the sound FX and visuals could never do! Aw hell, what am I saying....everything Jerry did was spectacular! ALL of his movie soundtracks were amazing! He will always be my most favorite composer of all-time! Bar none! And to not have 'Rudy" in this lineup is a travesty! Quite possibly one of the best sports soundtracks of all-time, period! I love this music!
"The 'Burbs" is the quintessential example of tongue-in-cheek scoring, and while it might not be his greatest score. The man literally ripped himself off but in the most imaginative way possible. All of the leitmotifs in the film from across his previous scores were utilized to hilarious perfection.
Amazed at the thematic similarities between Alien and ST:TMP. I personally partial to ST:TMP, but man, Patton is a close second. Totally dissimilar music, but both phenomenal pieces. What a talent.
Sleeping whit the enemy The Edge, forever Young, star trek insurrection(Baku village), star trek first contact ,star trek Voyager, first Knight, Supergirl, basic instinct, Poltergeist., Rudy. These are my favorites
A bit of trivia. Goldsmith was a student of Miklos Rozsa, a true genius not only in film but classical composition who taught at USC, Goldsmith was his most commercially successful student. He wrote a secondary theme for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea TV program but it was not accepted by fans.
The Secret of N.I.M.H. Total Recall Lionheart The Russia House First Blood (Rambo: First Blood Part II / Rambo III) So many amazing soundtracks by the venerable Mr. Goldsmith.
The original 'Planet of the Apes' score introduced the mass public to classical atonal music as well as 'found sounds' (not just sound effects). Bravo Jerry! Use 20th Century Music to tell the story of mankind's chaotic future - pure genius! *The* most original science fiction film score since the Barron's 'Forbidden Plant'.
I'm glad you included Star Trek TMP, it's the most mind-blowing, fantastic, otherworldly piece of film music I've ever heard. And Poltergeist. And the rousing Patton march (which I think should be our new national anthem). But I think Goldsmith's Gremlins 2 was a better, more wild/crazy score than the original Gremlins.
The guy was just brilliant. It's difficult to pick his best, but I can try. Poltergeist Legend Magic A Patch of Blue The Other Sleeping with the Enemy Rudy Planet of the Apes Twilight Zone The Movie Psycho 2
I realize you can’t pick everything he did…but The Sand Pebbles should have been on here somewhere…infinitely better than Gremlins IMO. My favorite of all soundtrack composers… my two top are Star Trek TMP and Patton (which here wasn’t from the original recording… I’ve been listening to that for 50 years, so it’s kinda ingrained in my brain now, lol.)
😢what no Papillon, Islands in the stream, The Sand Pebbles, The Blue Max. Along with Patton, The Wind And the Lion, Alien, Planet of the Apes, Chinatown, and The Omen. That’s his real Top 10. In my humble opinion.
I've always liked the soundtrack to The Burb's he also puts his Patton theme in there! But has the synth samples in there that add humour as well (like the dog barking sound on the main theme). One cool thing to know as well, the soundtrack for the game Call of Duty 3, the main theme for that - awesome, and composed by his Son!
Being a Star Trek fan, The Motion Picture soundtrack is by far my favorite of Jerry's compositions and it influenced the music for the rest of franchise in my opinion. But, not on this list and I'm pretty surprised is the Medicine Man soundtrack. I often listen to the MM sountrack and just close my eyes and enjoy the ride. Such powerful, emotion provoking music. (The movie was pretty good too) The man was an absolute genius.
Jerry and John were always the biggest Hollywood rivals and I always enjoyed Jerry's scores a bit more and the only maestro who fits in both their shoes is Howard Shore in my opinion.
God So many. Here goes. 1) Star Trek The Motion Picture 2) Explorers 3) Legend 4) Hoosiers 5) Rudy 6) 13th Warrior 7) Players 8) Great Train Robbery 9) Patton 10) Papillion 11) Every Single one that wasn't mentioned.
Amazing isnt it we are all here saying where's this score and where's that score from Goldsmith. The man was taking us on a Musical Education that I don't get with other composers.
Now, here was an artist of the cinema scores that had many winning scores in his time. My all-time favorites are "Patton" (1970) and "Star Trek - the motion picture" (1979). If I'm not mistaken, Jerry did also a 1962 movie entitled "Freud" that starred Montgomery Cliff, Susannah York, and David McCallum. Wierd but rather fascinating. Goldsmith's talents also got him doing some TV series which included, "The Waltons" (CBS-TV) theme.
I agree about "The lion and the wind". But not enough western music! His themes for "Bandolero!" and the "100 rifles" are beautiful because they really fit the story.
Not to forget Lionheart, Hoosiers, The Illustrated Man, Seconds, Logan's Run, Damien: Omen II, First Blood, Medicine Man, The Secret of NIMH, Powder, The River Wild, Coma, Hollow Man ...
It should have been 11. Where is The Edge? I had a one-man survival adventure on Aristazabal Island on/off the British Columbia coast, and experienced exactly that kind of mountain majesty ... and potentially terminal danger ... which nearly got me about 6 times. As for Patton, that one march completely turned around America's post-Vietnam demoralization. GREAT film. GREAT (George C. Scott) performance. GREAT march ... and soundtrack.
Jerry the best composer in film music of history. unfortunately he left us too soon. The modern soundtracks that we missed these years
I wish jerry goldsmith will be reborn

No, it was Patton.
Who cares?!? The man was genius! His scores are beautiful! I've enjoyed them all, no matter what place numerically they are placed!
To whoever compiled this, thank you so very very much for letting each song play at length
So many to choose from, however Love Theme from Chinatown is near perfection.
