Y’all miss the point. This isn’t competition, this is companionship. Chemistry. They’re speaking to each other. They’re having a conversation in their own voices. It’s brilliant. Both of these men brilliant.
Thank you! Nobody is trying to outshine either here. They are just having a friendly conversation.

Facts bruh. In another solar system.
Wth we could think in the exact same way
Aside from all the love/hate for BB or john. The drummer for this did a fantastic job, he gave both players what they needed to jam like this, everyone needs a backup like this, blues didn't happen without a little rhythm
Drummer was on point. Thanks for pointing that out.
I'm glad someone pointed it out, the backing band read every little clue that was given to them by the B.B. and John. They gave the guitarists exactly what they wanted around every corner, and sometimes even gave them the twist they weren't expecting but was exactly right for the flow of the song
*squidward voice* nobody ever thinks about the drummer
You don't play with BB King unless you are top of the class
Pretty sure I can hear some keys in there as well
i hope when jm grows up he gets a john mayer like him to jam just like john mayer is doing with BB

happiest ending story of a teacher and a student blues guitarist.
Lol, also more like, "Yo, check out what I can do, Pops!"
Tomo Fujita(John’s guitar teacher) is hella proud
@@lllPNTlll everyone who knows John for his guitar knows Tomo. Tomo is so patient and so calm and happy. He is 50% philosophy and 50% teaching.
@@fatkitty4207 I agree. sir Tomo is his teacher and inspired from BB.
John Mayer is there like he is really appreciating being baptized by the King of Blues guitar. So glad he had that special time with BB before he passed away. And BB seems like he is really enjoying the influence he has had on John and is really digging John's playing. What a joy to have come across this piece of musical history!
1:05 - the line by BB and Johns "awkward" line in response, followed by his giddy, almost embarrassed yearning for approval from BB IS the most priceless moment of John's Career.
BB is so fucking classy. He seems short and crass at first, almost as if he doesn't like john but it quickly becomes apparent that he appreciates his talent and youth, even if he has no patience for johns ego.
You articulated that very well
Wow!! Your comment is so on point, it made the video this much better. Thanks a lot pal!
One thing I'm being aware of, is that, when you're playing the blues, sometimes your own style and your essence tells you what to play, when you try to do more than what you're musicality is telling you, sometimes the blues kicks you back and you sound awful 😂 I can tell that BB has a style much more melodic and calm, and that's what makes him so interesting, not too much notes, just the right feel. Others like srv and Albert king, they're own style tells them to be that fast, and that's what we sometimes don't understand 😅 I'm starting to learn that I have to flow with the blues, talk with the music, feel my own rhythm and style. And man, that a hard way to go! Greetings, blessings and what a good comment!! 🔥🎶🌀🏞️
Bro they are just having fun, people read what they want to see.
this isnt a guitar battle, its more like a guitar conversatioin....
true !
Been reading some comments underneath and it seems like most people thinks it`s all about speed and technique, John Mayer holding back or trying to outshine BB, etc.
To be honest I`m pretty shocked. My advice: stop listening and start really listening. Of course, when it comes to mastering a guitar, there is no hidden fact that John Mayer is on another level. However, when it comes to making music, finding the right connections of notes and most of all feeling it, BB is simply outstanding. Just listen to the fantastic licks by The King.
Do people think he became the king by being the most technical player 60 years ago? Stop looking at the guitar like it`s just a piece of materiel and start listening to what comes out of it. Think about it this way. If you listening to one song compared to another, would you say that the fastest and most technical song was the best? No, because music is about getting touched, whether it`s rock or a soft song. The point is that it doesn't matter. And what do we do with a guitar? We make music and that`s what it`s all about.
What is the point of playing 10 notes if 1 note can show you so much more?
Smartman Additionally, the semi-hollow body guitar that BB plays (Gibson ES-335) has a deeper and richer tone than John's Strat. It's really perfect for blues. It's not as EASY to play as a thinner bodied, solid wood guitar but BB isn't concerned with "easy". BB's mindset is QUALITY just as you're stating here.
Smartman look at buddy guy his style is pretty fast but he can make u feel things ! i think like you that music if for expressing before every thing but it doesn't mean that slow gonna express more than fast is juste that if u do it with soul you gonna have your own style and gonna express and unique message and how you do it is juste up to you.Like a mirror for your soul
Daniel Rodrigues And how exactly does that make you disagree with me? Just because I think BB King expresses more than John Mayer doesn't mean that I necessarily think that a fast guitar lick or solo is less soulful than a slow. Read carefully to what I wrote about music. "It doesn't matter" as long as the music reaches you. However a good guitar solo is like a good speech and most times you don't need that many words to express yourself. You gave me buddy guy as an example which by the way is one of my great favorites, I give you SRV.
Smartman because you were saying that slow express more than fast and that's not the problem fast or slow, it's what the solos mean
Daniel Rodrigues WTF. I did just give you the answer above, and then you just write the same thing all over again. This discussion was over in my last sentence. Didn't you understand me? End of discussion man.
BB's timing is unbelievable and his minimalist approach is almost unattainable. The true master of less is more but yet saying something so emotional. And John is my favorite singer-songwriter guitar player of his generation.
Imagine if SRV didn't die and he jammed with John Mayer...
Thats probably Johns legit lifedream
Best duo ever yup
It would create new time signatures
@@mirrorneurongirl Ur crazy :D, John Mayer is a master just like SRV.
@@mirrorneurongirl John's at 40 and is already a legend. When he's 70, he'll be better than SRV ever was.

the timing of BB is impressive....he is feeling it...
Chris Parisot it’s all about the soul....
Love how around 7:30 BB says "feels pretty good doesn't it" vs "sounds pretty good doesn't it"
Pure passion and emotion. You can't teach that.
That last 2-3 minutes was truly bliss. Conversation through music. Honor, respect, and pure joy.
BB king is fixing mayer play by adapting his own speed , emotions , gestures to mayer's . Transfering blues to mayer and preparing him to be next blues soul keeper , illuminating his path , guiding him and helping him control his excitement ! Rest in peace King , you're a true legend .
why do we need to compare? lets just enjoy the beautiful music together music is all about creating and sharing anyway! :)
spot on!
It’s just a great opportunity to hear them jam together nothing wrong with that!
Its all bout the feeling in the that moment and let your finger GO !!! Its like a high off a drug you up your down , its like sex hit it slow slow ....slow .Hit it Fast ! I say thats the blues ba ba blues babbby !! Rip B.B. The King !
John is good but when BB get on I just feel it way more
5:47 hahahahha john just fell in love, it's great to see the admiration on his face and real respect for those that came before him.
edit/ I just realised something very interesting about this performance and their body language.
Notice how BB is facing forwards playing for the crowd, playing the show, while john is almost always facing BB. John is playing for BB trying to earn his respect. It's almost like a master/servant relationship playing out on stage.
I think you're almost spot on. John idolizes BB. He's a legend in the Blues community. He's getting to play alongside him and just bask in the moment. I can't blame him. If I got to jam with my guitar idol, I'd probably act similar. It's awesome to see him looking like a little kid in some moments.
Agreed. John absolutely loves and respects BB, and it's obvious by his playing and the look on his face. He didn't want to miss a moment of watching his hero play right in front of him.
Lol scroll up. Watch the video another time instead of waiting your time on the comments section. Everyone is a blues master apparently on CZcams comment section lol.

Fuck me, that was absolutely incredible. The duel (might have been in part 1) seriously brought tears.
And the band: Best of the best, I'm thinking. Never missed a change, always right there.
An incredible set, one of my absolute favorites.
I will if you insist.
We’re all out here celebrating BB and JM, give it up for the drummer, bass player and rhythm guitarist holding it down! Those turnarounds are pristine, 20 minutes of nonstop...
It is SO beautiful to see them jamming together and just having a great ol' time together. Two legends!
BB King was quite simply a giant. He was in his late 70s when this was filmed. I'm not a huge Blues fan but you can just tell the man was a genius. John Mayer is a good guitarist. I think he deserves credit for having the balls for performing alongside the maestro.
HUGE balls.
he was 81
That bass player needs more recognition he’s a pretty solid bass player
Thanks man... Didn't notice it till I read this

Wow what a conversation, y’all listen they’ll walk and talk the blues, it’s brilliant...!
It's insane in the begining it's like they're speaking ti each other and I can hear johns voice when he plays
This was a love conversation. Love for blues and for each other in the craft. Nothing more. This is as beautiful as it gets man.
BB King and John Mayer is an epic combination.
Merciful God, I pray for your provision to overflow in the lives of this cherished friend and their household. May they lack no good thing, and may your abundant blessings empower them to be a blessing to others, spreading your love and kindness wherever they go.
Obviously BB and John are both great guitar players and musicians, but the thing that makes this performance so impactful is the connection that all five musicians are making with each other as BB and John have their conversation. Just phenomenal!
This is an example of quintessential blues guitar playing. You can literally hear JM and BB having a conversation through the licks they are playing. Call and reply!
The sound of BB Kings guitar is like a dad speaking to his child. So mature!
I swear drummer's so good it appears BB's on the drums remotely. Peak musicianship.
Bb is overwhelmed cause he never knew he would influence somebody so great or even generations in the past and to come. I saw John live he is amazing. He can play the blues. The blues is aboutta feeling. We all as blues players feel that sincere feeling. If you Hate on John you are not a true blues player. Blues guys love othe blues guys cause only we understand what eachother feel.
Jack R. BB influenced SRV himself what you talking about
BB looks annoyed to me. John is just wanking like a dork.
There are 2 really different slices of the truth, what is actually going on in BB's head is another slice, and everyone else has their own slice. I don't really read Mayer's soul, in his playing here but I love his technique and touch.
BB is not 'overwhelmed'. He thought JM a very good guitarist but didn't like him personally...thought he needed a little more humility.
@@tootz1950 did bb tell u that?
John is so incredible, especially here. He showed his absolut peak. Yet BB is comfortable showing him doors to the one last point which might be beyond of any guitarist ever. Door to emotions, heavens of music. There was so many great technically fantastic guitarist, but yet.. Here is last step. BB is there.
Beautiful comment
Two legends of music in their own rights from their respective generations, came together to create something monumentally soul piercing. This is absolutely magical!
Beautiful ,the master and the apprentice rip BB and thank you for all you have done from Elvis Presley to Eric Clapton to Stevie Ray Vaughan and of course John Mayer
I LOVE IT BB King showing john mayer how a real blues man plays guitar.
Magic. Always come back to this. Love the chemistry between them
7:15 I like Mayer's aknowledgement of BB's little flourish there. They look like they are having blast and who could blame them. They're both playing with one of the greats.
This is incredible. Mayor is a master but understands he is still the student here. Love when Mayer reacts to BB's lick at 0:27.
And Mayer reaction at 7:16 shows the respect he has for BB Kings feel.
JM is hella cute being around one of his idols. Can't help but smile!
I feel like the whole video is about BB giving blues lessons to John Mayer. And the best part is it's awesome👍😍
Without even telling him BB KING was teaching John Mayer live on stage the way of the Jedi! #MasterYodaKing
They just fed off of each other's energies, it's so wholesome
i was 1 year old back than 2006. now im glad to be able to listen to that great music!
Sat listening to this and the first half and hammered through a bottle of Whiskey. Amazing Music! Amazing Musicians! Pure Musical Gold!!!
mayers solo after he said this is my last go around was the best.... his last chance to show bb what he had inside him... and he nailed it.
These guys could have dualled the blues ALL night .. what a privelege to listen. Wow. Man. Legend.
Just realized that this video was posted in 2009, when i was 6 years old. Now I'm 16 and I'm just in love with it !! The ttime flies
Elloumi Mehdi same it’s crazy to think about
Elloumi Mehdi wait how are u 16 but im 15 then?
mayer's got great technique, BB's got it all
It’s one of those sleepless nights and I finally found the video I never knew I needed
mattsucksatmusic same reason I am watching this but JM should have just relaxed. The way to prove your greatness when you’re so privileged enough to play next to the greatest is to do as if you have nothing to prove and just enjoy the moment. That is greatness in itself. Technically couldn’t shine for itself because he was busy trying to outdo the master.
Take Clapton on the other hand. He is technically a blues master in his own right, yet he treats King as blues royalty. There’s a difference in that.
I almost "came" listening to this! Life can be good. Thank you to all the musicians that make our lives better.
I love watching musicians visibly feeling every note they play.
All I can say playing guitar is like riding a skateboard you develop style effortless style , when I first watched this video my ego was telling me, Mayer I love you and you have created pure magic but don’t be disrespected the king like that and then I felt like bb was being rude in return but now I have come to the conclusion that this is pure love, a clash of beauty and extreme skill between 2 musicians this must of been a true dream realised by John and bb loved the beauty of a younger outstanding guitar player, would love to see these two play together again . Sadly that will never happen RIP bb’s beautiful soul ❤️ iv enjoyed this for years
BB King just makes me feel good inside.
I never get bored no matter how many times i listen to this masterpiece, get goosebumps every time !
To sit there and resonate with the King... I bet that was a vision he saw since he was young.
this is a pure jam session. the joy of their conversation was so good. i am having an eargasm by listening to this
this is like the feeling you get when you seriously jam for the first time with your guitar teacher.
I could stay here the entire day.. lol I should be working now.
i love how John Mayer is so humbled in front of BB King and the respect he shows for him
I am a Chicago native; yes we ARE the BEST music city in the country. You got it right, John!!!! Kingston Mines baby!!!!
4:59 it's hard to believe that this part til the end of the line was improvised .. such seamless work by the rhythm section
BB king is one of the few guitarists who knows that less is more...
The feeling he puts in every note is amazing.
John mayer is the blues guitarist of the present, loveable and got his own sound I love it very much.
Can we talk about how on point the drummer is.
i hope i get to have a guitar conversation like that with someone one day. just swapping licks and having a damn good time.
Well.... .. .I just had a musical education. Playing since I was a kid and being off the guitar for a few years I just checked in here put some diversity on my 7 years old's mp3 player. Suddenly it all becomes clear; hat off to John Mayer very talented guy, but there is a certain element that I missed and I think many of later generations have missed, even Vaughn to some degree: it's about more than shapes and moving through riffs, or even variety in that, the reason these old guys were great is confidence. They strike and bend with confidence and at the right time, that's important; rhythm requires confidence, rhythm & blues requires confidence and you can't make up for insecurity with variety. These old guys play most notes with confidence (not pride) they know there instruments and music so well, they know what sound is going to come out when they play a note and they're not afraid to let it ring, be heard and feel!
Joseph Forbes thank u for the guidance 🙏
John's nervous in front of BB. He usually plays with much more soul, but who could blame him haha.
Both are Great
Mayer's great, but I have never heard him playing so tight and really out of sync with the rhythm section. You can say what you want but he caved that night. Couldn't handle the pressure. It's so obvious when you compare it to any of his other playing.
He's drunk and or way too high also. Talking so much utter Bullshit.
@@MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out he needs to diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee YEARGHH!!! SO THAT MARK CAN REST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John is and has never been nervous.
marktarmannpiano what kind of utter bullshit is that to say? What musician - especially a blues guitarist - wouldn’t be nervous playing with BB? And then assuming it’s because he was too drunk or high. What a dumbass thing to say.
Now ! Y’all see why he was called the King of Blues ! Thank u Bb for the lifetime of Blues ! ❣️
0:33 BB keeps hearing John repeating his major thirds he loves to throw in. BB knows this musical theme all to well, he knows why John likes it, he throws a lick that maybe Coltrane and Sonny and even Milt Jackson used to do, an inverted arpeggio that sings 5 - 8 - 3 -4 and trills between the 3 and 4, teetering between sustain and resolving, and he can resolve to the 3, or to the dominant 5 and land on a resounding 1. Where's he gonna go? Beautiful phrase that I remember playing many times on tenor.
An amazing collaboration of improvisation between 2 blues guitar legends. B.B King is the man but John answered back note for note and was almost too respectfully humble to King. You can’t just play the blues, you gotta feel it and I saw that connection and it was amazing and I watch it often. It mesmerizes me and takes away my pain.
,ncredible discipline and pursuit, respect to the star musician . congratulations drummer
This is a guitar battle/conversation and they both win in their own style, this is how guitar talks to each other
RESPECT THE KING!!!
What a joy to watch this 2 speaking to each other souls, rest in peace BB
Thankfully I just stumbled upon this and the conversation between the guitars is just... fascinating
one of the most epic jam sessions ever
They are not playing music, they are music ❤
I honestly feel like John's just really nervous playing guitar in front of BB. but he's trying his best to sound good (my personal opinion)
mayer's emotion is in his head. bb's emotions are going straight out his guitar. i can understand it's easy to over do the playing when you're playing next to a guy that can produce the most distinctive single note vibrato that ever walked this earth. lol
You are so right without a word you can feel every word that BB guitar is putting forth, not taking anything away from John but they are in 2 different playing fields when it comes to what music is designed to do which is to reach on the inside and Lucille does that every time!
Hes white
Both virtuosos in their own right, but even virtuosos have masters. BB King is the King of Blues!
It's videos like this that make me wish I was good enough to be right there with BB. Such an honor and pleasure to play alongside him. Best thing to do now it get good enough to carry and perfect his craft... just make it sing like it's its own person with its own personality. And every guitar got its own personality.
Let that baby sing!
He's just a kid next to BB, in every sense, bless him.

They were both just feeling it on that one! That was an amazing performance on both parts.
Real classy back-and-forth by a couple of legends!

BB King was the "Class" impersonated, such a wonderful soul he seemed to have... Thanks for sharing!
Man, what would I give to be there...Hands down, the best blues guitarist of all time.
It's like, I knew what BB was going to play but it was still a pleasant surprise and better than what I thought.
5:45 JOHN MAYER FALLING IN LOVE
Like you are not?
John Mayer you can tell has such respect for other great guitarists like BB and Jimi Hendrix, when he plays music with BB you can tell he is doing it with passion and when he pays Hendrix covers he puts his all into it and it sounds amazing.
1:08 LOL
That smile that BB finaly cracks is everything
3:56 you hear it from the guitar first "I wanna thank you" this definitely helped to shape him in to the wonder he is today The King was teaching him and testing him the whole time this was like a breath of fresh air
