- After purchasing a RO/DI system from Melev's Reef, it's time to install it. This video provides a tour of how the system operates, what you need to know, and how to get it running in a few minutes.

Thank you for showing how to actually connect and disconnect the grommet fittings....no other video I have watched actually showed that! Thanks again!
I'm from uk and enjoy watching your videos and demonstrations.if I lived in US id buy from you.keep doing what you do and don't let jealous trolls try and put you down.thanks for all the vids
Thanks Craig. Still have a few more RO-related videos to upload today.
I like your system. I would get one if I didn't already have 2. Very informative. I would recommend installing a backwash system on it for a more user friendly setup. I really like that you have locking clips on your fittings. Great video.
Very informative i wish bulk reef broke down install like you. Thanks Mark your video was super helpful
That’s because bulk reefs videos are just pushing products.
This channel is more down to earth and about spreading earned knowledge
This looks a really neat system indeed ... I'm looking to get my own RODI system soon to make things easier 🤗
I love how clear you explain things. Thank You
Question about the flush/bleeding between uses to flush the TDS.
You open the fresh water valve so the flush runs out I got that. Do you need to have a stop valve between the T and the DI while you flush so it Only runs OUT and not into the DI for the first 10 min? Or will the pressure of not having the product water valve after the DI stop the flush water from going into the DI.
I’m assuming the small T does not have a diverter and is just a basic open T
There is no stop valve, it’s just a normal Tee. The water only comes out the valve you open; the water in the tubing going to the DI is in stasis and still super low.
The water coming out of the valve you opened before the DI is the water that was surrounding the membrane, which is the TDS creep you want to flush out.
It only needs to run 90 seconds, then close that valve and open the valve after the DI. 10 minutes is too long, unnecessary and wasteful.
You should make a video about the 150 gpd one
Agreed!
@@jessebreyer709 I'm sorry you are upset, but I"m here to help. I already replied to your email, and will reach out to you this evening to get everything resolved.
I'm actually going out of town. I want to be here when it comes so I'll order next week
I'm doing the same on Tuesday, but will be back Saturday evening. So either way, it will ship on Monday. LOL!
Just bought one, hope to set up my my 37 gal soon 🤙🏼🤙🏼
37 gal? It's a bit on the small side of things ain't it mate??
@@Teamlastofus yeah looking back I wish I had gone bigger. Oh Well lol
Thank you for this video
Doesn't the water go to the DI unit when you are purging? is it best to add a valve after the purge "T" so that water does not go to the DI when purging? or is it not necessary?
It doesn’t continue to the DI. Think of it as a diverging line, bleeding off the water before it can reach the DI.
Great video
I'm in Sarasota Florida, winter is no problem, but how hot is too hot...? Summer time, 8 months of the year, my tap temp is 85-92ish... Is that an issue...?
No, that’s not an issue. If the water was over 110°F, that may cause problems.
@@melevsreef ok, cool, thanks...!
I've been checking videos for quite awhile you seem like a nice guy it sucked the day you had return that fish tank after you set it up but it looks like you're back on track again
Back in 2013 when the 400g leaked? Yeah, that was quite an ordeal. 18 months later, it was back up at last. :)
Looks like a great system.
How about flushing the new carbon for a few minutes before it hits the membrane?
Could you make a video on how to hook up and install the drinking water system in conjunction with the RO DI unit?
Glad I watched this. I accidentally ran Hot water through my system and wasn't sure if I ruined the membranes. I changed them just to be safe and I'm glad I did.
This is truly an amazing unit. What’s the msrp on the unit?
$174 plus shipping. Here's the direct link: www.melevsreef.com/product/100gpd-5-stage-rodi-system
What about showing how to connect to cold water? My apt had to replace my old faucet and they said it’s a liability to hook my system back up but I’m allowed to do it. I’m looking to learn how to hook it back up under my sink. I still don’t know how
If you wanted to install it under the sink, this is the fitting I recommend. It fits on the cold water cut off. melevsreef.com/reefshop/reverse-osmosis/plumbing-connections/angled-speed-fit-valve
There is a version of this at Home Depot as well, if that is more convenient for you. Once installed. you can continue to use your cold water faucet like usual. The red tubing from the RODI system will fit into the 1/4" connection of the fitting, and there's a blue handle on the fitting if you wanted to shut off the cold feed for some reason. (Of course, you could shut off the normal cold water feed with the handle right beneath it.)
@@melevsreef thank you for taking the time to answer me. I still don’t know where or how to connect to the cold water under the sink.
@@lisadimercurio9473 Please email me a picture of your cold water connection under the sink. sales@melevsreef.com
melev, do you sell a double membrane ro/di system
I sell the upgrade kit to use a second membrane. I can build it for you if you’d like.
Hi melv. I have a three stage it's like yours but only has one carbon chamber. Do I need an extra Di unit on the end like yours or is it ok with what I have.it has at Di meter on it and I'm told by its previous owner it's fine to use. Great video by the way very informative.
As Bluto said, if your results are good, there's no reason to change it.
I have hard water at my house with a water softener. Can this still be hooked up while using the water softener still?
Yes, you install it after the water softener.
I live out in the desert and water gets pretty warm during summer. How could I make this work?
😢
My question is,when is brand new how long will take to produce the first 100 gallons,I know probably depends on my quality water and flow, but is this two are acceptable.
well I am very sorry I truly believe what you're saying it's just that CZcams has become a selling point for a lot of CZcams channels and I just want everybody to do the right thing for the new reefers that's all good luck and I hope you sale many of them.
Yes, youtube can be used for that purpose. I try to always give the best advice I can from my channel, and I will be featuring products I sell from time to time, in addition to the other videos I produce for educational or entertainment value.
Hey Marc - what kind of shelving unit is that?
It’s commonly built in custom homes, in utility rooms, hall and master closets.
I have never used a retaining clip..what exactly do they do and how do they do it Marc?
How would you split the cold water tubing from the intake to feed both the washer OR the RO/DI unit without having to disconnect all the time? So you can use the selector like on the faucet with the valve? What piece would I need for the cold water intake split?
was further in the video. Got it.
Mel, do you think the RO water after the DI is safe to drink? I noticed that your drinkable water comes before the DI.
+Ronald Johnson Drink the RO water, not the DI water.
My question is if I get this kid how does it filter the water doesn’t get connected to the Fishtank itself I am totally lost at this
Where can I get the system
Please go to melevsreef.com ( the site was recently updated and the links in this video’s description haven’t been updated to the correct paths.)
Thanks for the video, it's time for me to buy my first ro/di unit. It's for my 29 biocube and 10 gal QT. Would this be over kill?
When I bought my first RO/DI (which is this exact one) back in 2002, it was for my 29g aquarium. I never thought of it as overkill. 100gpd makes about 5g per hour. That seemed like a very nice production rate for that size aquarium. Later, I added a 55g reef to my home, and a couple years later I upgraded to a 280g reef. I still used the 100gpd system for a couple of years with the 280g reef. :)
I live in a very small apartment in NYC. By "command" of the landlords I'm not allowed to drill anything. I was wondering if I can use this system without mounting it on a wall. Let's say, just connect the required tubing and sit the whole filter system on the kitchen counter while it's working. Can be that possible?? Thank you.
Yes, absolutely. Some people have done exactly that. My own concern is that you don't want it to topple over. So when you are running it, if you could push it closer to the wall, or place something on either side preventatively just while it is running, that would be safest. Alternately, maybe it fits under the sink and can stay there... you may need the tubing to be a little longer than what it comes with. Hook it up, run it to make water, then coil the tubing back up and tuck it under the sink next to the RODI system.
I got one from brs I have a question could someone please answer it had a waste water valve when I shut it off it has 60 psi but when I open it it goes close to 0 is the system working right? Even though the psi plummets when I open waste valve?
I love your video guy. Please help me out if it's ok. TDS before system showing 230 after system TDS showing 20 or 30 is that ok to drinking.
Please reply my message. Thanks
Yes, 20-30 TDS of Reverse Osmosis water is perfectly fine for drinking. It's better than 230 TDS, right?
I'm interested in buying your product. I'm wondering if your cartridges fit other systems like the ones from BRS or BuckEye Hydro... Thank you.
Hi Jodi. Yes, my filters fit other brands of RODI systems because I sell industry-standard 10" filters. www.melevsreef.com/catalog/rodi-systems-filters
Great. Thank you.
I hope that set up was for video only. Why would you set this system up near an electrical outlet? No slight on you system but in the video you installed the ro/di system near an electrical outlet. That seems like an oversight on your part.
It's for visual demonstration only. I agree, you don't want it over an electrical outlet.
Yes but you know there is some idiot out there who will do this and blame you because he saw it in your video.
Yes, that's a good point.
The water is maintained in the RODI system, never leaks. You obviously don’t have a fish room to maintain your aquarium lol amateurs these days.
Hi.where in the first 3,4 stages should pressure booster be added? Ty
The booster pump runs after the prefilters, before the membrane itself.
what do you think about router tube filtering system he's also is a great salesman no sock filtration he highly recommends that. we have to eat I understand that but you're selling something that Bulk Reef Supply has been selling for many many years. The end
"The end"? I was selling these before BRS was. And Spectrapure was selling them before I was. What is your point?
why is the drain water keeps on running if you had installed the membrane but if the membrane is removed the system stops
That doesn’t sound right. Why would you remove the membrane and run it? What brand of RODI do you have?
Hi, so what is the difference between the 100 gal and 150 gal RODI system
You can see what the 100gpd system comes with in this video. The 150gpd system comes with a larger main bracket because it has a booster pump installed, as well as a pressure gauge and a dual TDS meter. The 150gpd system has a better waste ratio that is approximately 2:1. It's a good system for those that live in a well, or run a maintenance service. Or have a big tank like mine. :)
Thank you, I will be buying the 150 set up on my next paycheck, thank you for all the great videos!
I'm thinking of buying this, would the RO water taste funny or would it be flavorless?
It won't taste funny, it will taste clean. Water doesn't really have a flavor, does it?
melevsreef well bottled water to me at least always have a different taste, another thing, where are you located for local pick up? I live in the Orlando, Florida, area
I'm in Fort Worth, Texas so that would be a long drive for a pick up. :)
I really don't like the taste of bottled water, btw. Never tastes as good as the RO system I use.
melevsreef hahaha yeah, well I'll try and order it soon, since I'm establishing a 13 gallon saltwater tank this Sunday
Hi is this still for sale, where I can order.
The link is in the video's description. Thanks for asking.
Do you sell just the goodie bag
I don't sell them as a package, but I do list all the parts on my site here: www.melevsreef.com/catalog/rodi-parts-acc-0
How can I buy one from Australia?
You should buy one in Australia. Check with "100% Pure Reef", they will be happy to ship you one.
What's the difference between your system and a system from brs?
They are quite similar. What you can compare is if it comes with the ASOV, is it 100gpd or 75gpd. Those are the areas that may be different - I haven't checked theirs in a while, honestly.
I'm setting up 300 well 298 and I'm going all out and setting it up piece by piece with great stuff this time. My 100 is great and growing sps but I want an a1 system this time
Perhaps you'd prefer this system then. This is what I use for my 400g reef & 60g Anemone Cube: melevsreef.com/catalog/150-gpd-boosted-rodi-system
Yes I want something like that. I'm done filling buckets of ro and filling my ato
I can ship it out Monday.
What's the retail on one of those
These are $174 plus shipping. Link in the description.
?...I didn't know there was a RO & RO/DI Unit. Is just a RO unit ok for saltwater aquariums? or should it be a RO/DI UNIT?
Yes, the main system is the Reverse Osmosis portion (or RO), and the De-Ionizing stage (DI) is the what makes the entire unit RO/DI. Lots of places like Home Depot, Lowes, Costco, and Walmart sell RO systems. We use RO/DI for our aquariums.
instead of wasting water letting the "waste" water flow straight down the drain, you could instead keep a tank to store it for flushing your toilet with.
2nd 😭
I'm glad you found my comment interesting and you laughed out loud enjoy making money from the new reefers because Mama didn't raise no fool🐳🐟🐠🐡🐙
I don't really understand your negative point of view. I've been selling these for over a decade from my website, which you could clearly research via google. I simply posted a video for my customers, something I've been meaning to do for some time now. I sell all sorts of products from my shop because this is what I do for a living. I laughed at your comment about peeling a BRS label off my RO system that I'm selling.
"turn on water, let RO run 60 minutes" ????? I think you meant 60 seconds
If you are talking about the final slide of the video, it states "if you are running it for the first time, run it 60 minutes" to flush out the food grade preservative that I mentioned several times during the video.
Bulk Reef Supply gets to me back right away so let's see how long it takes for you to get back to me if I would buy a RO/DI from you. customer service is everything
Yes, they are very helpful.
first!
Thanks for the videos! Love the channel.
as far as I'm concerned you're telling me you have customers but you should have sold them the RO/DI Reverse Osmosis System before you even started to sell them a tank or do maintenance on their tanks I see what you're getting at you want to make the money
People buy what they want where they want. Some people are brand new, and don't have a RO system. Others already have one and buy something else from Melev's Reef. There's plenty of business out there for everyone, it's not a competition. :)
what type of adhesive remover did you use to remove the Bulk Reef Supply sticker off
I actually laughed out loud at this one.
You must have money invested in BRS to be trolling Melev like this. Give it a rest.
looks like just the one I have buy Bulk Reef Supply but it only looks like they change the label
I know, right? They do look quite similar.
what I'm trying to say is that everybody's trying to get rich in this hobby by selling all kinds of stuff new reefer that are not familiar with the hobby this message is for all new reefers do your research first before you purchase anything🐟🐠🐡
I've been selling these units since before BRS sold them. I simply needed to get some videos on my channel for my customers-- finally.
238sol the man knows what he is doing. He has the experience, the research and the development to offer a unit that he stands by. That is something that is encouraged.
I like to hear what your input is on my message to you
Working my way through the messages now. :)
I have multiple channels by the way so don't delete this let's keep it real here
"Let's keep it real here" as you try to cast aspersion and make stupid comments? Wow, you're definitely the piece of shit douchebag of the day award winner.
for you to be able to pool this off you'll have to sell them for at least 30% less than Bulk Reef Supply because Bulk Reef Supply is a very reputable company don't you think so
I know many people buy from BRS, just like many people buy from Premium Aquatics, Marine Depot, and some purchase from Melev's Reef. I work hard to keep my own company reputable.
How come DI water not good to drink???
It tastes terrible, and is ion-free. Not great for tooth enamel, as it is a little corrosive.
@@melevsreef if it’s not safe for me then i’m not gonna give it to my fish- if DI resin is leaching toxic plastic into my water then i will use a distilled instead, it doesn’t use any plastic resin to filter the water and it’s just as pure or purer
