    Candide is one of my favorites, but this finale is one of the best things Lenny ever wrote.

    I looked for Jerry Hadley's bio after reading the comments here. Did not know his personal story: what a huge loss for the world! I hope he has found peace.

      I agree! I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes. What a brilliant composer.
      I had the fortunate luck of sitting next to him in a restaurant near Lincoln Center. He was generous of spirit,warm,humble,and even shared his food with us.The experience is embedded in my soul.
      And--this music--there are no words!

    First, I worship Lennie and I adore this song, and have watched many, many different renditions of it, and I am loving this one with him conducting!! I am also impressed with June Anderson singing lead Soprano, what a pleasure to watch her perform so young. I am so glad this video exists in the historical record.

    I like that Bernstein slowed down the tempo at the end so you coukd really hear the different choruses that are happening... okasawa conducted the ending as fast as other folx often do and you can't hear all the voicing as plainly and it sounds muddled ...here the vocingss are clear because of the slowed down tempo after 3:35....

    • @Midnightblueguy
      @Midnightblueguy Před 6 měsíci +1

      Any singer worth his/her weight in gold is able to sing it at this tempo BLINDfolded ( as they say ) people said Jessye Norman's Four last songs was ridiculously slow.....but then again it's always those that aren't really able to sing it like that themselves. The rendition is legendary. Make our garden grow ( as with almost ANY piece of storytelling through music....) Quadrupled the emotional effect when slowed down to a majestic tempo.....which Folks who struggle with proper support and line.....almost always complain about. This recording is a masterpiece.
