  • In this video, I create a virtual bonsai and use 3D animation to show you a technique to grow a full dome-shaped apex on your bonsai. I demonstrate the technique on a wild olive bonsai - olea sylvestris - to start its refinement phase.

      @BlueSkyBonsai  Před rokem

      Thanks so much Simon for your great review! I created the 3D model using clara.io, it took a few months in my spare time to learn and construct the model.
      I had decided that it would be easier to demonstrate the apex technique in 3D than 2D drawings but hadn't realised how much longer it would take!
      Yes in some ways I prefer doing the horticultural videos because they are based on repeatable scientific method, with predictable results. The artistic techniques are hard to replicate exactly ftom one tree to the next, since every tree is a different world and potentially a blank canvas.
      Btw I agree about those awful squeeky whiteboards, they were so bad that afteg doing those videos that's why I decided to go to the virtual whiteboards.

    Hello Dave! Nice seeing you again. :) My trees are all getting ready for winter. Only the apple trees, oaks, and elms are still green. :D And they're all way too young for any of these hacks yet. :P But they're growing strong and tall. :) Though I had to cut some of them because of mildew. I got the worse "infection" of them this year. Still, they're growing pretty well, and I just hope it won't stunt the growth of the ones I had to cut too much.

    • @BlueSkyBonsai
      @BlueSkyBonsai  Před rokem +1

      Hi Syster! Nice to hear from you, I'm so glad to hear all your mini trees are doing well.
      Mildew, it's annoying and a bit unsightly, but thankfully is one of the least dangerous leaf molds. Removing leaves that are infected is okay and shouldn't affect the long term health of the tree. Some of my oaks get mildew, and I don't bother removing the leaves unless they have a different fungus (yellow spots) which oaks sometimes get. What you could do next year is get a plant-friendly anti fungal spray, and spray them in late spring after the new leaves have hardened off, then early summer, then late summer and hopefully the mildew won't get a chance to reappear.
      Ps. Daughter's 2 turtles doing well and growing bigger! 😊

      @@BlueSkyBonsai I got both the mildew (which spread to almost every tree) and the one with yellow spots as well this year. I sprayed with a fungicide, but it leaves such ugly white spots on the leaves, so I don't really wanna use it if they don't have fungus on them already. :/ I think the issue is that they're on a glassed in balcony, and the air is too still.
      Any suggestions for fungal sprays? I'd love to try it, if I can find one that isn't making them look ugly, or is too dangerous to our dog. Did I tell you we got a dog?

      @@SysterYster I use an antifungal spray that's quite mild so I actually do it 3 times in two weeks. But it doesn't leave any white marks or problems on the leaves. It seems that three times are necessary to remove the mildew, but that works ok.
      I still carefully remove all the yellow spotted leaves to avoid that fungus spreading. I also found ants on one Portuguese oak with yellow spot, so I suspect the ants might be spreading the fungus- maybe even intentionally as food?? Don't know, but I put some ant powder around the base of all the oaks' pots after that, removed the infected leaves in early September and thankfully it hasn't returned.
      The fungicide spray is called Algoflash fungicida polivalente, it's made and sold here in Spain. I have another called Jardinero Verde fungicida fungiben lu, also made in another part of Spain, with similar results. They don't smell good so open a window for 5 minutes after spraying. They are not good for animals, but I guess that's only an issue while the spray is still wet on the leaves. After all I have been using these for years and it hasn't affected me! But then I don't go licking my bonsai leaves like a dog might do 😂😝
      Enjoy your dog!! We sometimes consider getting one but for various reasons we won't. Maybe when all the kids have grown up and flown the nest 🥰

      For soil I use approximately 2/3 akadama and 1/3 kiryuzuna. For trees that need more water retention I add some chopped pine bark - but that's only outdoors here in hot Madrid. For indoors, your akadama + kiryu mix will be perfect. You should also use some liquid fertilizer diluted in the water every couple of weeks. HTH

    Hi, Blue Sky. I just started my journey with bonsai thanks to your channel, and got a japanese maple. The issue I currently have, is that I have no idea how to start shaping the tree.. I would love to have some tips for this!

    • @BlueSkyBonsai
      @BlueSkyBonsai  Před rokem +1

      Hi Mr Cow, It's great to know that you and others are getting into bonsai in relation to my videos. It's a truly fulfilling hobby as well as natural, therapeutic and artistic. Be prepared: You will almost certainly kill a few trees accidentally at some point - it can happen to any of us. But as a hobby once you're hooked, it will stay with you for the rest of your life.. and that is a GOOD thing!
      For styling your new JM. Autumn is not the best time to do it - enjoy the leaf colors and wait several weeks after leaf-drop. Then you can prune the branches without jeopardizing the tree's health.
      For general philosophy on why and how to prune your bonsai please see this video: czcams.com/video/cOGAJ5iqWfk/video.html
      For winter pruning tutorials, please see these videos:

      Winter pruning 2022 as an update on the trees that you saw in the 2021 video:

      @@MrCow579 yes it's a good thing to do, to propagate your tree with cuttings, but keep in mind that most JM cuttings in winter do not root for at least 4 to 6 months. So you could try to plant a few cuttings in water-saturated soil, but also be prepared because many of them fail and don't strike roots. It's a bit hit&miss.

    Do you use regular soil or bonsai soil if you train a plant to be a bonsai in a big pot ? :)

    • @BlueSkyBonsai
      @BlueSkyBonsai  Před rokem +1

      Bonsai soil is quite expensive to use on developing trees, especially akadama, kiryuzuna and kanuma - I save these for my developed bonsai, which are mostly in smaller pots. For developing trees in big pots I still use granular soil because I have observed that it allows the most healthy root growth. So I use a mix of cheap non-clumping non-scented "pink" cat litter, cheap pumice, some perlite, some lava gravel, all seived to about 5mm (1/5 ").
      It's a mix that I have been recycling and reusing for about 10 years now - each year I add in the used soil from repots and seive out the dust and fines.
