  • After an attempted kidnapping, an investigation into a missing child begins, but its not what you might think...
    Season 6, Episode 1 'Birthright': The SVU detectives investigate the attempted kidnapping of a six-year-old girl (Abigail Breslin). The man behind the attempt (Ned Bellamy) is revealed to be a private investigator hired by a woman (Lea Thompson) who is convinced that she is the girl's biological mother. This claim uncovers a fertility doctor (David Forsyth) with a scheme to steal embryos and give them to different parents, prompting a custody battle between the biological mother and adoptive parents (Beau Gravitte and Camilla Scott).

      And the two guys that hurt me when I was 14 and they were 19 both of them left their DNA and got me pregnant. I had triplets my two daughters belong to the name Chris and my son had DNA of the other man Paul not uncommon, but it's very rare , anyone in the world can be sick to do anything? A doctor is supposed to tell you certain things but I think some doctors tell you so they can just get money.
      You know my my one doctor he says I don't have asthma, but I need an inhaler because I'm allergic to the pollen outside but if you use an inhaler and you don't have asthma, you're gonna mess up your lungs more and I went to a different doctor and they said no you don't need an inhaler. You just need to take an antihistamine , when you go outside
      Stink they're smart because they went to school for it. I know how to give people stitches. Maybe I should be a doctor. I never went to school but you know what I could be DOCTOR. I'm not gonna tell you some BS like all these other doctors are, but I'm not a doctor so I can't be a doctor. Actually the mother whose daughter died in the accident (Michelle Osborne) was the real mother to the living child; it was HER EGG that was mistakenly used for the other couple.
      She (Michelle Osborn) took it to court to get custody of what was rightfully her daughter (her egg for IVF), but backed off after seeing how upset the child got when she realized she’d have to leave the only parents she had ever known.

    You know what this episode kinda reminds me of? The story of when King Solomon was approached by two women with a baby, both claiming to be the mother. Solomon said that because it was impossible to tell which was the true mother, he would cut to baby in half and give each piece to the women. One of them refused to let this happen and decided to let the other woman keep the baby so long as the child was okay. That was how Solomon knew that she was the real mother.
    The DA used a similar strategy in this episode, she put the girl under so much pressure that the woman that orchestrated the kidnapping decided to plead guilty just to get her daughter out of the courtroom. Sadly the law is not as kind hearted as Solomon was, so the 'real' mother still went to jail. The plus side is her daughter feels safe and happy with the parents that have been raising her and maybe some day when she grows up she'll decide to reunite with her biological mother.

    Interesting moral question. From the DNA it is clear that Michelle is the biological parent of both girls. Should she not have some case against someone ( doctor, clinic or hospital) for "stealing" her embryos? And if Patti's mother was also undergoing in vitro treatment, what happened to her embryos?

    • @amariahlovelace5113
      @amariahlovelace5113 Před 5 měsíci +3

      She as well as all of the other women involved have a case against the doctor. She also had a case against the parents, but she decided that it was doing more harm to the child than good.

    • @sexykitten0814
      @sexykitten0814 Před 4 měsíci

      Yes, Michelle absolutely had a very good case for a lawsuit against the doctor for stealing her embryos, as did Sarah Branson, Patty’s birth mother.
      But that’s a civil matter that was their choice to pursue or not.
      Patty’s birth mother had no viable embryos, sometimes IVF just doesn’t take.
      So to pad his batting average, that doctor stole Michelle’s unused embryos and implanted them into other women, including Sarah Branson.

    • @sexykitten0814

      @@amariahlovelace5113Actually no, Michelle had no case against Patty’s parents.
      Novak explains this in court during the episode.
      Under the law, a child’s legal mother is the one who carries and gives birth to it, not the one who provides the egg.
      So Michelle could never have any parental rights to Patty.

      @@amariahlovelace5113 Well if you go back and watch the whole episode, Novak does clearly explain in one scene what I stated, which is factually the law in every state.
      A woman can have no rights to be recognized as a child’s legal mother unless she gives birth to it, irrespective of who provides the egg.

    Slightly off topic, but why do they never shoot the tires when someone's trying to make a getaway? Here for example, they were point blank range of that van, it wasn't moving at dangerous speeds, nothing in their line of shot but the van and the road and they had backup ready to pursue. Pop a tire with a few shots and he's not getting far.
    And before some smartass says "it's a show, it's scripted etc", doesn't change the fact that basic logic still applies. These are still supposed to be regular people after all.

    At the trial, Patty Branson takes the witness stand. She testifies that Michelle told her she was Patty's "egg mommy." Although Sarah Branson gave birth to Patty, the egg Patty came from was from Michelle. Eventually Casey asks, "You know what Michelle said about being your egg mommy is true, right?" Patty begins to cry and wails, "No. It's not true! Michelle's not my mommy! I don't want to go with Michelle! Please don't take me away!" She asks to leave the witness stand, but Casey says she can't until they're finished. Patty becomes more and more hysterical until Michelle can't stand any more, and cries, "Stop it! Just stop it!" Michelle then apologizes to Patty and says she'll never bother her again. Patty runs off the witness stand to her parents, crying for her mother.
    Michelle pleads guilty to custodial interference, and is given a suspended sentence. She decides to move out of state, because it's too painful to be near Patty and not see her. Olivia finishes auditing Norton's fertility clinic records. Michelle had extra embryos, 10 of which had been implanted in other women. In addition to Patty, somewhere out there Michelle has three other children, two daughters and a son.

      @@kopawhite1399Bounty Hunters tend to work on the fringes of the law and can get away with a lot of stuff normal cops can't. And lets just assume Patty was in fact kidnapped by the Branson's. They wouldn't have a leg to stand on to say she was kidnapped when they already took her. Bounty hunters can take children away from individuals who are not their custodial parent, even their own biological parent if he/she doesn't have custody, and return them to their custodial parent. As far as law enforcement would be concerned, they rescued a kidnapped child so the only thing they might get in trouble for is accidentally hurting the girl.
