  • Tourist tram. Replica of the tram (LM-33) “American”
On November 6, 2019, a new regular tram route “First Tourist” (T1) appeared in St. Petersburg.
These legendary trams served citizens for a record 46 years: before the war, during the blockade and after the war until 1979. 40 years ago, passengers saw off their favorite tram on its farewell trip.
In the early 30s, a group of Soviet engineers under the leadership of Dmitry Ivanovich Kondratyev went abroad to study the experience of foreign colleagues to design a large-capacity tram. The attention of specialists was drawn to the four-axle cars of the Peter Witt company, which were operated in the USA. The American origin of the carriage explains the name given to it by Leningraders based on the official abbreviation. At first, the trams were named MA (American type motor) and PA (American type trailed). However, later, in order to combat cosmopolitanism, the name of the car was changed to LM-33 (Leningrad Motor, developed in 1933). But among the people, the carriage has already become firmly entrenched in something clear and simple - “American”.
