  • TEMA PORT EXPANSION PROJECT
Unprecedented in the history of sub-Saharan Africa…The Tema port expansion project, the most ambitious port construction project on the West coastline of Africa has reached it’s first major milestone.
The Tema Port Expansion Project has been initiated by Meridian Port Services LTD (MPS), a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and the 2 world renowned port operators APM Terminals and Bolloré Transport & Logistics.
MPS has continued to make its vision of investing in Ghana’s maritime sector a reality, as it now invests in the Tema Port Expansion Project. In addition to serving Ghana, the new port will also expand trade flows and links across West Africa.
This massive harbour infrastructure development has successfully stepped through various stages of realisation and is on the last stretch to completion. This will also ensure that Ghana can claim leadership in port infrastructure across West Coastline of Africa and become a hub for trade in the region and beyond.
The Tema Port Expansion is designed to provide a world class harbour infrastructure with a design criterion to cater for capacity for the next 100 years. The project involves the building of a breakwater and an access channel harbouring deep-water berths to accommodate larger vessels with sophisticated port handling equipment.
    The project entails:
    BREAKWATER CONSTRUCTION
Hauling up to 3.5 million m3 of various size rocks and boulders and placing them on the sea-bed to form the 3,550-metre-long breakwater.
    DREDGING AND RECLAMATION
Dredging the entrance channel, harbour basin and quay wall (between 18 to 19 meters deep) to allow access for vessels with 16 m draft.
    QUAY WALL
The quay wall will be 1,400 meters long constructed in 2 Phases. At first 1,000 followed by 400 additional meters in due course (4 container vessel berths).
    BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES
    There are three major buildings.
    • Office for the Authorities and all the supporting services.
    • Office for MPS from which the port is managed,
    • Workshop for the maintenance and repair of equipment.
In addition, a number of structures will be constructed such as gates, a self-contained power station and other utility buildings.
The new harbour facility will be totally paved to enhance the use of the container terminal. The first phase will be 90 ha and 127 ha when completed.
    CRANES AND EQUIPMENT
The new facility received a much larger fleet of cranes including Ship-To-Shore gantry cranes (Super Post Panamax 23 outreach and 10 on deck) on the waterfront and the latest Electric Rubber Tyre Gantries (7 wide and 1 over 5 high) in the container yards.
The fleet of 27 gantry cranes will play a vital role in the future of port operations in Ghana. The new port with its new cranes are future proof, ensuring that Ghana can keep up with the advances in port trade. It is an investment into the future.
After 3 years of planning, licensing, contracts awards, drawings, simulations and stress tests; land has been reclaimed from the sea and so far, 350m of quay wall, 16 hectares of container yard and 12 mW Power Station have been commissioned.
The landscape of Tema will continue to change as many more facilities are completed, offices are built and finished, data and server systems installed, and Gate complexes are put in place, in line with the drive to make Tema port an efficient paperless port.
The new Tema Port is getting ready to GO-LIVE…

unfortunately, Africa does not have the technical know-how at this moment and the education to build this project. we will slowly faze them out but we will start by developing of infrastructure while we educate our pple more
