  • In this video i went on the grand forts tour out in to the Thames Estuary on a boat called X-Pilot. We visited all the sea forts that were built in 1942-43 during WWII to help protect London and detare or warn of Air raids. The forts were designed by Guy Maunsell, similar structures were also built in the Mersey estuary to help protect Liverpool but were dismantled after the war. the forts were decommissioned in the 50s, they were once used as a pirate radio station but mostly left to rot. There is an appreciation group on facebook called THE MAUNSELL SEAFORTS APPRECIATION GROUP if you would like more information on these forts. we also visited a ship wreck called SS Montgomery, She was grounded in WWII loaded with explosives, she still holds 1,400 tons of it in over 10,000 bombs. She was waiting for a convoy to form so she could continue Her journey across the channel. she was an American Liberty cargo ship built during World War II named after Richard Montgomery, as she waited her anchor dragged in shallow waters and she became beached on a sandbank.
