seems like a great game. i bet the reason most of the levels are just spikes is because the scripting is really robust and people are still figuring out how to do more complicated things

I think in part it's because the style of game is sometimes called "I wanna games". A lot of them use it more like a descriptor, like I Wanna Vanilla or I Wanna Anaconda Box.
There's also already an I Wanna Kill The Maker. Maybe the name would be too close to that then.
Does Nick know about this? If I recall, NL and Nick met because of something like custom SMB levels way way back in the day. This seems like something he would love and take to immediately.

Nick definitely knows about it. He's a regular viewer of BRex's streams, and BRex plays IWM all the time.

Subscriber milestone should be an official I Wanna Be The Guy playthrough! The fun of IWBTG isn't necessarily just the fact that the game is tough. The fun is seeing how absurd the obstacles get. I laughed as many times as I got frustrated because of the ridiculous, unique, and unexpected ways the game was designed with to kill me. The official game feels like a stand up comedy routine in the form of a difficult platformer. I feel like these maker levels remove that level of unexpectedness and creativity, and in the process, lose the soul of the original game.
It's not so much losing the soul of the original as moving on. You can't make the same jokes funny forever, after all. There were already tens of thousands of levels before this game made it easier to make them, so people have explored all of the possibilities of the format. NL managed to deftly avoid all the creative stuff (the Bicycle levels are particularly impressive) but it's really just incredible how diverse the scene is now compared to the original.
Tbh for me the focus of these games have become precision platformers with no horizontal momentum and thus a lot of opportunities to play really well, though I understand your angle too. There are plenty of guy games still like that too.
In the community, there are many different genres. The reason the video only really showed off precision platforming is because you need to search the 'trap/troll' tag to find levels with that kind of style.
ellpoyohlokoh NL really nailed it with the 'tree picks up a gun and shoots you' bit, because that's exactly how it feels when shit Starts randomly killing you.

he has way better mechanics than many people give him credit for
he's good at games, just bad at some, but somehow a lot better than a lot of us. His Isaac skills while talking is the hardest thing to do, I tried.

Really happy to see you give this a shot! I Wanna Be the Guy was a heck of a thing when it came out in 2007 and the fan community that sprung around this silly, spiteful fan platformer has really been remarkable. I Wanna Maker deserves more love :)

The levels all seemed fantastic, which was a surprise. When I saw what the game was I immediately thought it would be a dumpster fire. But I guess this is a game that attracts mostly fans of the series which kinda know what they're doing instead of the mass appeal of mario
Honestly these are some of the lesser good levels. Pretty boring compared to some of the better stuff on this game alone.

This game has some pretty neat soundtracks. Paragonx9 did a lot of the Castle Crashers soundtracks, and right when I heard it my brain time traveled back to the New Grounds audio portal. Nice nostalgia trip, cool vid NL.
Can this possibly be a short series on YT? I love watching entertainers play creative "I Wanna Be The" challenging spin-off games... I may not have the time or patience to play them, I would love to see more though; I remember playing it when I was younger. :D

Ya know, maybe an I wanna be the guy let’s play could be a subscriber milestone. Not the full game sense I know they can be very long (and very difficult) but seeing new open minded nl play it for a video or two could be fun.
I wouldn't mind seeing a playthrough of it, but I genuinely think that many IWBTG fangames are better than the source material.

I think 'I wanna be the guy' is the worst first impression when it comes to the community. To the average person, it's not very fun. Many fangames are probably more fun to play than the source material.
im pretty sure (someone better than me at these games might correct me) but i think that jump you tried to do in candy needle very hard is literally a one frame jump input which is usually done with a trick named jumpcancelling which is very advanced
No, I don't think the candy level needed anything like jump cancelling. It was very very difficult, but not quite on that level of unreasonability.

There's already a game called 'I wanna kill the maker', so they might've wanted to avoid a similar sounding name so people don't look up and find the wrong one. Also, most IWBTG games are just titled 'I wanna _____', not 'I wanna be the ______'.

If you’re so level-headed and salt-free now, then play IWBTG on stream.
I honestly think IWBTG is not very good compared to IWBTG fangames. There are a hundred others out there that would be more fun to play than IWBTG.
Considering your appreciation for Maker style games, NL, you should take a look at Levelhead. It's very much an indie Mario Maker style affair, but much, much more polished -- frankly, than Mario Maker itself, much less I Wanna Maker. It's supposed to be coming out of Early Access in April.
