Do not forget that Carcassonne was merely a ruin in the 19th century. It was Viollet-le-Duc the man who also restored and put the famous spire on the Notre-Dame of Paris) that reconstructed the city and gave it it's romantic actual feel.

You are correct that Malbork is the biggest castle, being "near" the town of Malbork, but a fortress includes a town within its walls.
