    I’ve been watercolor painting on and off for the last 21 years. I really enjoy your channel. A lot of great art work and insightful commentary. Keep up the good work!

    Hey Brian. Great to see them all together like this and hear your thoughts. Awesome stuff! Hard to pick a favorite, probably Bela Lagosi or the Gorilla. I actually like the silos quite a lot but I tend to lean to great landscapes. I think the color and contrast is great in that one! Time to relax a bit now eh? OH and thanks for the channel recommend. I'm anxious to check Steve's stuff out.

      The Mind of Watercolor Thanks so much, Steve! Yes, great to relax a bit. It’s funny, though. I’ve been “itching” to keep painting every day. Which is the goal, anyway, but I’ve found myself wanting to start the day with something quick and then move into work that takes more planning and time. Always great to hear from you! 👍

    Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this challenge. Amazing work! It’s so cool to hear experienced artists talk about what they are learning. Although I am fairly new to this, we are all in the same boat kinda, always learning new things. Very nice:)

      Elisabeth Svendby Thanks Elisabeth!! Exactly!! We are all in the same boat... all trying to get better and learn new things. The cool thing is that when we keep painting and learning, we can’t help but get better and better, naturally.

    Hello, Brian,
    Jeffery Rusnock sent me here thinking that I would enjoy your content. He is right. I do very much. Lot of beautiful works on your channel. I used to sketch quite a bit when I was younger but I stopped for 30, 40 years. I recently picked up pencil again (about an year ago) and took on inktober challenge (in 2018) by Jake Parker. I have not done any water color since my high school years in my art class. :) The 30x30 by challenge in June would be even bigger challenge for me (compared to inktober that is) but 3 months away, I might take on that challenge. If so I would have to come to this channel to learn about some water coloring. It would be more than I could consume but I think it would be very helpful. Thanks for having an awesome channel and I am looking forward to digging through your channel. Till next time, take care. ~NammaN~

      Hi Namman! Jeff's a great guy. Thanks so much for dropping by and checking out my videos! Your channel looks great, as well, and I've subscribed. Looking forward to seeing your videos, too. It's never too late to start back into making art. I know I learn new things from other artists all the time. Best Wishes!

    The most poignant part of this video, for me, was at about 3:00 minutes... I can totally relate. But, boy - that car is just really wonderful. I love how deep the colors you are able to get and how simple it looks, yet complex, overall. Fantastic to see your work together like this. Well done and already looking forward to more. Thank you for sharing. :)

    That was fun. I had missed some of these. I agree its important yo bdcable to critique your own work i do love the one of Diego and your son. I think I have seen that in my own house in the not so distant past.

      Oh yes. My game playing son and our dog Garth. But the dog has passed and the boy is on his own (knock wood. :-) ) my kid would take the same possition with one knee tilted inwards. Looks familiar!

    How do you decide where to start from when painting from a reference photo and even more so, without sketching first?

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  Před 6 lety +1

      Loati I would usually draw the painting in pencil first on a separate sheet of paper the same size as the finished piece will be. This allows me to work out the composition and drawing beforehand. Then I use a light table to trace my pencil drawing onto a sheet of watercolor paper. This allows for a lot of planning and forethought. My process videos have been the opposite... drawing quickly right on to my painting surface. This is so I can make videos of a short length. With drawing and also direct watercolor, you want to start with your biggest shapes first. This will help in figuring out where to put things and then you can work on smaller shapes and details after the larger masses are in place.
