Some great compare / contrast advice, Bryan. Your comment about "not being able to hide...forcing you to become articulate" is spot on. Seems a 2-year, small class size, explorative liberal art approach, followed by a 2-year subject focused, big research and facility resource of a state uni, makes a lot of sense.

Another great video! I went to a public UC school and had classroom sizes that were huge so I'm used to having assignments/projects and doing them without much guidance or interaction with the professors (we had TA's who we mainly interacted with).

In the UK, it's even more specialised. We have to choose or degree subject in the autumn of final year of high-school.
We already choose our A Levels subjects (3-4 subjects pre university) when we're 15/16 and our GCSE subjects in year 8/9 (ages 12-14) - I chose mine when I was 12/13. So there's the expectation that you know what you want to do earlier on. I wish the system was more flexible like in the US (minus the extortionate US college fees 😅)
The system is good for those who know what they want to specialise in early on though. I would be nice to have both options in the UK - the traditional UK specialised route and the flexible US route.

Good points regarding excessive options in the Liberal Arts Curriculum. The Strong Interest Inventory may help people find occupations that fit topics of interest, preferred work environment, and similarities with people who actually do that job. But, if one has no exposure to a vocation, subject matter, or work environment then one will register no interest in that area. So, if one has never spend time on a farm, then results will show no interest in agriculture. In this regard, Liberal Arts Colleges provide exposure to many areas so we learn of potential interests - theoretically. In this regard, you might do a video comparing a year at a Liberal Arts College to a year of backpacking aboard as both increase exposure to new concepts.
You can get that broad exposure anywhere, the problem is that you don’t have the opportunity to truly dive in. At a major university you can literally take PhD level courses and do research. In a major university you can have depth AND breadth, at a LAC you can only have breadth.

Oh wow! I have such a similar personal background as you do as a High School senior who haven't decided which college to commit to. I'm a Korean immigrant student living in SoCal. I am currently deciding between Washington & Lee and UC Berkeley, which I found both schools to be amazing after visiting them. The thing is, like you said in this video, I am unsure of what I want to do after college, but I have a general idea of what I want to pursue in, International Relations or/and East Asian linguistics (or even Political economy).
I was lucky enough to recieve the Johnson Scholarship from W&L, which would ensure me to graduate debt-free, but nearly all my peers are encouraging me to choose UC Berkeley for its prestige and wide-range of connections. Do you have any suggestions?

Also, typically liberal arts majors don’t provide the same depth and breadth of education that a full university will provide. In a major university you could take PhD level classes, get involved in research, etc. in a LAC you can’t.
The liberal arts model makes you “25 at everything,” while major universities will make you 150 at one thing, and 20 at everything else.

Hi, Bryan. I highly agree with you! I am a freshman in a liberal arts school as well. Can I ask what you would consider when you chose courses in a liberal arts school? There are too 4 majors that I am interested in and I am not sure if my choice is correct. I plan to choose basic courses for majors I am interested in. Do you have any suggestion of choosing courses in the first year? Besides is a question about first year experience. I am considering to enroll for the violin courses provided in my school, but since I haven't have a good control of my time, I am worrying that I will end up making mess. It would be nice if you can answer! It is a great great video! My feelings are somehow related!

Hi Bryan, awsome video once again! Quick question tho, Im thinking of taking up a double major in Finance and Econ but it’ll take me around 6 years, right now Im in my first year of finance and I’ll finish that in 4 years. Do you think its better to just major in Finance and just use the extra 2 years instead (from the double major) to get a CFA and get more experience? Plus the econ degree might make my gpa lower so thats that.
I would not sacrifice the tuition and time just to get a CFA

Hey Brian. I'm feeling kinda similar rn. I enrolled to study Economics but over summer I found programming very interesting (i haven't done it before) and the college I'm going to has a degree in Finance and Technology which isn't as highly regarded as Econ among the employees however I really want to try it but I'm scared if I won't like it I will fall behind with Economics and will be forced to redo the year. Whats your thought? I'm curious on what you would do.
I think I would try it out.. tech isn't very school dependent and much more about your skillset and projects

Financial aid packages at liberal arts schools are incredibly beneficial to students with demonstrated need. Because there are no merit or athletic scholarships to be given, the aid is given to students who might not normally be able to afford the education based on their household income. Moreover, most liberal arts schools are need blind and meet 100% demonstrated need, so financials are not considered in admission, and almost always covered by grants and scholarships

Trinity is an excellent school, my dad is an alumn and had an amazing college experience. Also, it has the feel of a small school with a close community while being in the capital of CT.
