3 years later this is still an OUSTANDING video! Thank you for laying out both of these racks. It’s all the info needed for us to know what we’re getting into with this kind of investment.
Just be careful with your back, brother. Don’t injure yourself by lifting too heavy, too high, and too unstable!
Thank you again.
Yes. I might just need to get a trailer. I'm not that fit, not that tall and sturdy to be doing this long term.
Fantastic video. I'm exploring my options, and this real-world/real-user video is like getting a recommendation from a good neighbor! Thank you!
Glad the video was helpful
Great comparison video. You used a realistic size kayak with two of the most reputable rack companys. Very informative. Big help in making the right purchase. Thank you.
This video and your previous one about installing the hullavator was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
Glad this video was helpful.
Excellent 👋 video of the two systems I specially like the fact that you use a heavy kayak to compare the systems and the full loading and unloading processBravo 👏👍
Thanks. Glad the video was helpful
This was great, man, thanks. Exactly what I needed.
Thank you for the great feature comparison. I see advantages to each...but we're going with the Thule Hullavator, for sure!
Glad this video was helpful. Both are great products but depending on needs one will work better than the other.
Thanks for this comparison - it's super helpful to see how the lifts work with a large kayak and I actually have the exact same boat, so this gave me great insight!
Glad this video was helpful
Excellent review bro! Very thorough and precise. Thank you for making this video!
Glad this video was helpful
Great video. You answered my questions. My daughter & I are getting kayaks, due to our height, we’ve had some concerns, about lifting & securing them. Thank you for making such a great detailed video. 😊
Glad this video helped you
been heasitating to get one choosing out of these two. very detailed review, thank you !
Your welcome
Excellent review!!!! Very detailed step by step taking away any doubts. I used to be able to get my 17' 65 lb kayak up on the roof of my car that was 8 years ago today at 63 I just didn't have the strength I hate to admit so I've been looking into different solutions and after watching your video I think I'm gonna go ahead and get the Thule Hullavator since its lower. Watching your video answered all my questions. Thanks for this!!! Great Job.
Thank you. Glad this video was helpful.
An excellent video comparison of the two systems. For my needs, the Thule system is the way to go. It was also helpful to see that you were able to put both systems on your racks at the same time.
Thanks. Glad this video was helpful.
Great information. I didn’t see this video before I ordered the Hullivator. Watching this video I am so glad I got the Hullivator. A big plus is that I learned how to get the Hullivator cradle arms off so I can get it in the garage.
Glad this video was helpful.
Thanks--very helpful comparison! The Hullavator does look easier to use, and thanks for your Hullavator installation video, too.
This video is so helpful!Thank you.It would be nice to discuss price of each system. Thule is definitely more expensive and this demo helps to justify in my mind why it's worth the extra $$.
Thank you for being truthful about your height! As someone whose 5ft, I’m worried about whether I’d be capable of loading the kayak by myself. Great video!
Wow thanks so much. I am only 5ft 2 . Glad I saw this before got yakima.
Glad this video was helpful.
Thanks for the comparison. That’s really help
Glad the video was helpful.
One of the best comparison vids I’ve seen
Thanks
Most excellent presentation, many thanks
Thank you so much for this detailed demo
Your welcome.
Good stuff 👍🏼
I’ve been using 2 Hullavators on my 2002 RAV4 for a few years now. It definitely makes life easier !
What type/brand/model of kayaks do you carry?
Great video, thanks for sharing. You did a great job and that is good information..
Thank you. Hope this video was helpful
Very helpful thank you !
Thank you for saving my back!!!
Great comparison! I have the Thule Hullavater (second hand) so the strap pocket was a great tip. I also have a wide kayak and you can put the bottom fixed mount over the plastic to give you some extra room. It’s snug, but very handy to get the kayak level.
Awesome
Excellent demo. I bought the Yakima only because it costs less. In Canada I paid total 1,784 dollars tax and delivery (everything costs more in Canada). I preferred the Thule but it was almost 1,000 dollars more. I agree the Yakima is more difficult to load. I am 5 foot 2 female with a kevlar 39 pound 14 foot kayak and I could not lift it on from the front. However when i lifted it onto my shoulder I walked it parallel to the car right onto the rack (very slowly). So It is possible without someone else (but maybe not for your 84 pound kayak). I am going to maybe use some lubricant on the system too so maybe it may be slightly easier to maneuver up and down and sliding.
Well this was super helpful. I’m thinking of going back to solid kayaks and getting a system like this for our truck cap. The problem is the truck is a Ram 2500, the damn this is so high up. We switched to PakBoats aluminum frame kayaks that pack up into manageable bags but I need the space in the truck bed back.
These systems might do if your taller than I am. Probably a two person lift just cause it's higher up but I've seen the hullavator on other trucks.
Thank you for an excellent video!
Thank You
I'm just exploring the kayak world. I'm already sold on foldable kayaks because I assumed a roof rack for a hard side would be too much for me and my 5'-3" self (and owning a vehicle whose roof is 7' above the ground). Then I saw these that drop down for loading ... and this video shows me why it's still not feasible for my use. Thank you for your effort.
Get a harbor freight trailer, you wont have to lift it more then 20''
@@MTips18 I would, but I go camping (in style) in a travel trailer and want to take the kayaks with me (and I refuse to attempt to double pull). I did pull the trigger on Tucktec kayaks and LOVE them! And ... I have a friend that has hard sided kayaks and (since this video) I found out she has one of these contraptions and it works fabulously on her vehicle!
today installing in my jeep kk the hullavator pro.....thank you for the video, i think for me (i am tall1,56cm) is necessary
Really helpful - thank you!
Glad the video was of help.
That was awesome 👌 👏 👍
Nice job! Thanks for sharing!

Excellent video, Thank You.

Great video. I have 2 pairs of the original hullavatora and 3 of the 4 hydraulics have failed. They are not replacement. But I've had both 16+ years. Now I need to replace both sets and am looking at options. But the hullavatora can't be beat!
Wow 16+ years. That's great
Thank you for this interesting and informative comparison. I am looking for an elevator system to lift and stow my tent on the roof of my SUV. The tent is an Oztent RV5 which weights about 70lb and is 6.5 ft in length. To date, I have had to manually lift it onto the Thule kayak cradles on the roof. This is a big job for one person. Based on your review, I think the Thule version will be a vast improvement for my situation. Many thanks 🙏
Glad the thule version will work for your situation. It's a great product. 👍
Nice. Dude moves like a martial artist
Lol 😆
Aparte del buen contenido de tu vídeo, la vista y el lugar donde estas se ve precioso
Thank you
Great comparison video. Thoroughly enjoyed this
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed
@@AutoSensation
Do you think you could compare the Yakima Overhaul to the Thule Xsporter truck bed racks?
Unfortunately I don't have a truck yet.
@@AutoSensation
No worries. Really liked how you included specs on this comparison. Also, it’s good to know the Thule can handle a little more weight than spec.
Thank you
Thank you for uploading this demonstration.
Personally, I wouldn't get either. For one person to load an Old Town Sportsman or similar kayak, it is much easier to lift the nose of the kayak onto the truck and then push it up then it is to lift the whole kayak as done in this video.
Yes. Your right. I need to buy a truck.
one give you 40lbs of hydraulic lift. If you have a 50 lb Kayak you are only lifting 10 lbs sideways
Thank you for the comparison. "Fits only on the Thule Professional Bar" can I use the THule Hullavator on normal Bar like Thule Evo?
Well produced and presented.
Thank you
excellent showing of the problem .
Thanks
Thank you for sharing your height during review of these kayak lift assist systems. I’m also 5’2”. A tall person usually has no issues getting kayaks on top of a car, but us short people tend to have problems. Thanks for this review.
Your welcome.
@@AutoSensation I got my Thule roof rack and Hullavator tonight from REI. I can’t wait to install them myself as I’ve see you assemble the Hullavator and it looks so easy. A local outfitter wanted to charge $100 for installation.
Thank you so much for very detailed and informative video and yes me being 5’2 I’d prefer the Thule Hullavator as well for my RAV4 Hybrid
Hullavator for the win
I'm also looking to purchase for my Rav4 hybrid! Did you purchase? If so, how did it work out?
thank you for the informations
Your welcome
Thule for sure! Thanks!
Thanks for the video. If upper clearance is an issue for garage, I would just pull the lift down like you do to put the kayak on it. Most garage doors are pretty WIDE. I wouldn't be tall enough to reach the clip to take holder off and put on.
Yes. As long as the garage door is wide. this would be an easy solution.
some of the hullavators you can't buy a replacement hydraulic cylinder.....thanks for a great video
I wish these were made with an extension in the middle of the arm, so you could extend it all the way to the ground. If i didnt have teouble lifting the kayak, I'd just strap it on the rolf rack. It's just as easy to get the bow onto the back of the rack and push, as it is to lift it completely off the ground, while holding it parallel, to put it on the rack. I was really hoping for something like this, so I wouldn't need to tow a trailer. It's looking more and more like a trailer is inevitable
Yes I do wish that as well. As I get older it seems to get harder to lift this heavy kayak.
Thanks for the video review. Cancelling my Yakima, back ordered for 6 months and Thule in stock.
Love the Thule Hullavator. Glad this video was helpful.
It's no comparison...
I have the showdown for my paddle boards and kayak but my kayak is 65lbs and I use a small ladder to get it on/off my pick up. I think if I go heavier I would definitely purchase the Thule.
Yes. The gas strut really helps.
Good comparison, I agree with you the Thule looks easier to use and drops lower. Thanks for the video 😊👏
NICE JOB
Thank you
Great video! I’m sold on the Hullavator, think it’d be able to fit 2 Old Town Sportsman 106 side by side?
Good job.
Thanks
Great video! Even better than the manufacturers videos. Whether you're 5' 2" or 5' 4" you did a pretty good job with both especially with an over weight kayak. I need to get a better model for myself. I like both but the Hullavator is a better solution for me. Thanks for this video.
Thank you
hi thank you. In the video you mentioned it can hold as much as 36 inchs which is 91cms. I saw on website says only 86cms max?
I may have set it wrong. I fit my Old Town which is 36 inches wide.
i just got lucky and picked up a new hullavator ..500.00 . now i have to get the compatible cross bars and foot pack but this looks exactly like what my old back needs!
Good deal. Make sure the cross bars yiu get are long enough. This is truly a back saver
@@AutoSensation it has been, as you say " a back saver!"
I also found thule aero blades 53" which gave me 5" on each side of the Forester .. its been great .. park on the side of the road next to a creek.. unload and go.. load it back up and head home after a full day.. avoiding boat ramps ..
Where can I get the adjustable tie downs you used? Thx
It help if you turn your steering wheel to the right
Went from 5'2 to 5'4 after reaching so high on that Yakima...
🤣
Excellent Video!! Now I know that Thule kayak assist is what I need.
I have 2016 Honda CRV with flush on the roof. What kind of crossbar you have on your car? and Can you please suggest what kind of crossbar best fit for it? Thank you sooo much
Sure get the Thule 60" wingbars amzn.to/37bLoGT with amzn.to/3jcmJYc fit kit and amzn.to/2Vq8xCD.
Excellent video. The Thule is the winner imo.
I agree.
Nicely done, sir. What would you recommend for a Mercedes Sprinter camper van? The Thule system looks great, but worried it would not go down far enough for me to load a 75# canoe.
Yes. I heard the ez rec rack is good for taller vehicles.
Well done Sir 👍🏽
But please have someone to assist you as it is not worth hurting your back .
Through personal experience The Thule gets my vote .
Yes I normally would go with someone and they would assist too. In certain cases where you go out in the middle of nowhere with a friend, it's prime time and the bite is on but only your time us up and have to get back. I know the hullavator would certainly assist me as your friend would take forever to come back to assist you 😂
Great video. Can you say how long the crossbars need to be? Or how long it would need to be if you were mounting two holders for two kayaks? Thanks
60" long. For both showdown and hullavator.
Excellent detailed information showing potential difficulties with each system. My fishing kayak currently rides on a 1999 Subaru Outback that's low to the ground and has a built in rack, and I'm able to slide my Trident Ultra 4.3 up the hatchback. But I need to have a backup plan when the Outback gives up the ghost. I also have a 2011 Outback with the basically useless swing out cross bar rack system. I'm on Oahu and it's rare to have enough parking space on the side of the car to load from the side, so I'm still looking for rear loading solutions. I may have to go with adding a toe hitch and Rhino T-Bar Loader. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the video!
D you go with rhino t bar loader? I'm looking at this for. My jeep. Wrangler and would. Like to. Know. If it helps. Do you stow kayak face. Down. Or hull down? I was planning just to have soft cross bar holders not arms
@@judecollett7004 I currently just use the Thule mat on my hatch and slide my kayak onto Thule Glide pads.
That's not a kayak it's a barge.
is that a crv? Thinking of putting the showdown on a new 2023 CRV....does it work well? no scratches or banging against the car?
It's a Pilot. Works very well. Not a scratch on the car. Just make sure you fold the mirrors in as a precaution.
This video is exactly what I was looking for - someone loading a heavy kayak on the Hullavator. I have a 86 pound Old Town Bigwater and I was wondering how well the Hullavator would work. Have has it held up over time? It it having any problems from exceeding the weight limit?
Still running strong. I've used it multiple times this fishing season. I would say because it sits at an angle don't tighten the straps too tight on a hot day. It will create a dimple in the kayak. Mine went away but just an FYI.
@@AutoSensation thanks!
Great video! Question: how fast do you think you can safely drive on the highway with your old town mounted?
I drive an average of 70mph with the old town mounted. No problems. Strapped with two straps to the hullavator, one on the bow and the another on the stern.
I wonder if I can use either as a ladder rack for my 32 ft extension. The Yakima looks better suited.
Probably could. I never tried it though
now, is the roof cross bar adjustable? Like I can push all to 1 side to have that 4-6 inches clearance?
Yes
I’d like to know why people don’t slide the racks as far forward as they go and as far aft. The tracks can’t be that short. It adds soo much more stability spread out more
Unfortunately the roof rails on the pilot are not adjustable. They are in a fixed position.
Because it's harder to manipulate if the front and rear thule racks are further apart. Miltary press is easier with your arms closer to your body. Further apart would allow for his kayak to fit better but manipulating the lock latchs on the handle and lifting will be harder
With my back problems, the Thule looks best. That's one honker of a kayak. What brand is it? It looks like it would be good for longer expeditions, what with that large cargo bay in the rear.
Old Town Sportsman 120PDL. Great kayak! 85lbs naked and 116lbs assembled with included accesories.
Great comparison, thanks !! Are you still using the Hullivator for loading your Old Town Kayak ? If loading a single kayak, is it preferable to load 'drivers side' or 'passengers side' ? Thanks again !!
Yes. Still using the hullavator for the old town kayak. My personal preference is loading it on the passenger side. No real reason. Just started that way and never really switch it up.
@@AutoSensation Thanks !!
Could you haul 2 kayaks with while using with mount
Yes. If you have two hullavators and a 60 in cross bar to fit both. I do it all the time.
Can you tell me what the straps are that you use for bow and stern tie down?
I got two different kinds amzn.to/3ijFKbV and amzn.to/3xmPcjl both work great.
The Thule Hullavator Pro looks sturdier and less issues to use. Does it come for heavier and wider kayaks?
No unfortunately. This is the widest it gets.
Surely the kayak should be the other way up. A sit in will be full of water when it rains. It also looks extremely bouncy. Not sure I'd trust it. Also, I'd want the straps running though some fixture on the kayak itself. With the Thule you do get "locks" for it, but honestly, they lock as good as cheap locks on a window. The Showdown... !
He did say you needed bow and stern tie downs for stability
Why can’t you put one end on then the other instead of picking it up full weight like you did?
You can but I'm afraid it will slip off. It's not that sturdy.
What model is your kayak. The old town 106 and 120 are rated 36 inches wide. Shouldn’t it fit flush using the Thule?
I have the 120. I thought so too but it doesn't.
Does it work for a sunfish sailboat?
The sail boat might be too wide and too heavy.
What did you use to tie down the bow and stern?
I got two different kinds amzn.to/3ijFKbV and amzn.to/3xmPcjl both work great.
what crossbars are used in this video?
Thule aeroblade 60". I think they are now called Wingbar Evo
How long are your crossbars? I'm wondering if it's possible to keep a cargo box and a kayak loader next to each other.
I have 60" crossbars. I sometimes use thule evolution cargo box with the hullavator side by side. Fits perfectly.
Great Question & Great Answer! Both of you have saved me a lot of time. I hope he’ll post another great video of installing the cargo box & Hullavator with the kayak. I’m serious. I live in Texas and planning excursions to Colorado & Missouri / Arkansas.👍
Seems the kayak people and roof rack people do everything possible to keep each other in business. Now, let's load that fully loaded Hobie PA14 on top of a Tahoe.
😂
Did you have to get the thule crossbars because of the extra 4 inch clearance. I notice the Honda crossbars dont extend past the roof rail
Yes. You need that extra clearance.
@@AutoSensation thank you unfortunately no crossbars like that for the 2023 crv yet
@@randomstuff53078 I believe you can get a fit kit for the Thule Wingbar Evo. Then add the 60" crossbar.
@@AutoSensation oh thank you I’ll look
what are those tie downs?
I got them from amazon. amzn.to/3Pt8HmD
What cross bars are you using? Looks like you have a 2018 Honda Pilot.
Thule aeroblade 60 inch. ARB60B. 2019 Pilot
@@AutoSensation I am told that there are no feet that attach to a 2018 Pilot, but your rails look just like mine. What kind did you use?
There are different types of rails. If yours looks like mine you have the flushed rails. You would need to buy the foot kit from Thule to go with the cross bars.
Can you have a pair for 2 kayaks. Will it fit on the roof? Thanks
Yes. Must have a minimum of 60" crossbar
@@AutoSensation thanks for the reply
It's OT sitting flat doesn't fit between the holders, on a hot dat a plastic boat will oil can
Yes. I never leave on a hot day. I only use for transportation and not trap too tight
I can't believe there isn't some smart engineer who can figure out a way to do this without all the lifting.
Thank you for your review! I’m going to be going with 2 Yakima Showdowns due to them being lighter at 22lbs each. I’m trying not to go too far over my roof capacity. I would love the hullavator though haha
I can't get the Explorer out of the garage with the Hullavator up.
It would be nice if they came up with a foldable design
