From her experience as a welfare officer for concentration camp survivors, Gitta Sereny (1921-2012) was fascinated by the Holocaust and those who engineered it. She interviewed key figures in the Third Reich, continuing her study of evil in later writings. [Listener: Christopher Sykes]

Gitta was an amazing woman. To read her work on Speer is incredible. One of a kind in her analysis of the period.

She actually met Hitler once in 1940. I'm surprised she didn't mention this, she's written about it occasionally.

No. She explains with necessary repetition that Stangl was a primitive man of limited intelligence and capability. She credits Speer for his intellectual capabilities, which were well demonstrated by Speer’s behavior during the Nuremberg trial and his ability to obtain a lesser sentence than the others. She discusses how she disgorged herself of emotion while speaking with Stangl and Speer. The rare hallmark of an effective author.

You have to have a certain fascination for the people you are writing about, or else you wouldn't write about them. Fascination and ability to empathize aren't the same as admiration.
