- OK, it's taken me a little while to really get to grips with firing up the Kamado Joe and setting the temperatures but I finally feel I'm at a stage where I'm comfortable with the process and so, I thought I'd share it with you guys.
It's the one thing I struggled with at the start - mostly due to fear of overshooting my temps but over time you learn how to setup your fire and how the BBQ reacts to subtle changes
Hope the video helps you get there a little quicker than I did haha any questions, stick them in the comments section and I'll do my best to answer them!

My tip would be always light it earlier than you think you will need it, really takes the pressure off getting it to temp.
I'll second that one, you learn to love the process of getting it all setup so firing up early and taking your time is all part of it
Learned this the hard way yesterday my first time using my Kamado joe
I just bought my first kamado this week and have been looking for exactly this kind of information. You've done a brilliant job of explaining how and why. Thanks and I'm subscribed!
Awesome mate, Glad you found it helpful
Great video, really helpful 👍
That was excellent info!!!
Great video! Thanks for the clear info!
No Problem Conor, Hope it helps a bit!
Excellent video. 👍
i needed a review as i have not used my kamado joe in about 3 years... this filled the bill nicely... i liked the back ground music a lot as well... thank you... ttfn
Thank you, works great for big green egg as well
Everything you said makes perfect sense.
Good stuff 👍
Great video James. Have you considered getting an Ash Basket. It'll throw your vent settings out by making air flow better. For 200c my bottom vent is 1 finger width open and my top vent just past the first line. They also make clean out much easier you just raise it up and shake all the ash to the bottom in the Ash Catcher.
That's great mate
"Scalding hot" is used in the USA, on occasion. Probably a hold-over from a time when scalding milk was done regularly.
Thank u for the help, its so hard for me to light it
Great vid, CZcams is making owning a KJ pretty easy
Thanks for the great video! You answered a few questions I had. I say ditto to GiuseppeM's comment "The challenge for me was always to figure out when the initial bad smoke smell was over, and it was time to put food in the grill." My first cook turned out excellent, so I guess I did it at the right time. But it would be nice to know the proper technique to know when.
Great video, which gloves and blow torch are you using ?
Thanks this is really useful. Please keep up the good work!
Thanks John! plenty more videos in the pipeline
Nobody knows how to set a fire better than an Ulsterman lol. Thx for the video
Welcome back!
Thanks Eric, good to be back haha
Thanks.I enjoyed that. Just bought a KJ Classic 1. Looking forward to getting the hang of it. Cheerio Mark, in Sheffield.
Thanks for the super thanks Mark. The Classic 1 is very similar, mostly the daisy wheel instead of the kontrol tower but you'll get on a storm 👊🔥
Great video but I thought you should have your top vent swung open when first heating up?
The challenge for me was always to figure out when the initial bad smoke smell was over and was time to put food in the grill
The music loop really overpowered your voice. I find that new CZcamsrs start with a loop and they find out pretty soon they don’t need it except maybe to fill in here and there.
scelping? mate I'm from Cookstown and I've never heard that term 🤣🤣 - great video though, always fancied a KJ but really can't justify the cost, went with a masterbuilt instead because i'm lazy
How many hours does it run with a full load of lump?
Great video as always , may i ask which brand of blow torch you use to light the firelighters please as im im in the market for one ?
In the market foe a Kamodo - a big one KJ 3 or the Monolith LeChef 2.0 guru edition. Leaning towards the monolith an bigger bang for buck. Any comments out tere before I commit. Thanks
Is it a lot of effort to clean after each use?
No not at all... I dont clean it at all when I finish cooking. Next time I go to use it, brush the ash into the tray at the bottom, empty it and light a new fire. The heat takes care of any grease etc
I think you mean 400° 🤔
Scalpin' hot 😂 (Aka, it would take the skin af ye)
