About the fight scene with Ian and Mickey, I think it shows they're still not perfect but they get each other. What they know and are used to is violence, Ian needed to be reassured that Mickey still saw him the same way, that he didn't see Ian as fragile, that's basically all that was about. Before Ian started having his symptoms Mickey wouldn't have hesitated to punch him so the fact he still did it meant he doesn't see Ian as weak just because of his mental illness. It's obviously not healthy but its what they know.
To be clear, I mean he wouldn't have hesitated to punch Ian in a similar situation where Ian punched him out of nowhere, I'm not saying Mickey is abusive towards Ian or anything. Also it's significant that I an brought him to their spot specifically to do this, it's a place that has emotional significance to them and Ian feels numb form the meds so he wants to feel again the way he did back then. They also shotgun beers the same way they did there before.

having been on lithium i will say ian’s reaction to it is really relatable. not only is it daunting to hear you will be taking medication for decades to come, but lithium especially requires a lot of dietary changes. no caffeine, no alcohol, even watching the amount of salt you consume. for ian who’s used to a more erratic life (and being in love with someone as wild as mickey) that amount of restriction can be so suffocation on top of all the other bipolar symptoms
Just look back at the first episode of the series to where you are now. Carl and Debbie have really grown up.
What Sammy did to Ian was way worse than anything Frank ever did. Frank is selfish and manipulative, he wouldn’t have ratted out Ian because that wouldn’t serve him. Sammy ratted out Ian with the intention of hurting the family for revenge.
if it could have served him in any way, he would have totally done it. just cause there was no reason for that in this moment, doesnt mean he would have never done it. he called social services on his whole family before WITH intention. :))))))))))

"it's almost as if they're giving Carl his own show within the show" truer words have never been spoken lmao, Carl is a very prominent character and definitely has his own story line, but you'll soon begin to notice that everyone has their own individual storylines that grow and get more complex with every episode!

Oh definitely. Ian is in a spot where he hates his diagnosis, he hates that he’s different now and everyone has to treat him differently, and Mickey the most of all. And after having to admit he has to go on meds and make that change I think he was kind of craving that normalcy of them fighting. Plus neither of them were exactly raised to communicate well so it’s no surprise that Mickey hit back, and I think that’s exactly what Ian wanted.
It’s literally abuse- I’m not saying they are bad people, but at the start of their relationship it was toxic asf 😭

Honestly Sammy was a bit of a mixed character for me, on one hand shes doing something right for the family, then on the other hand she does something that makes me want the HURT her. but after what she did to Ian all those good things can't even cancel that out.
Just a quick reference to the cold open- I know you said you didn't have a lot of ref to bipolar individuals. I've been to inpatient for bipolar disorder and chemical dependency, with a bipolar mother and husband. When you come out of treatment it truly does feel like your senses are covered by a wet blanket of sorts. To keep the mania and depression from happening, you reach this odd sort of depersonalization from yourself and everyone when they shoot you up with lithium or depakote. It does change you.

That's pretty accurate, I've been heavily depressed and on meds, and often your body feels like just a meat costume that you're piloting, your physical sensations are extremely dull, including pain tolerance. That's the reason of a lot of self-inflicted damage - trying to feel or to check if you can feel at all.
5.10 is such a roller coaster oh my goodness, and that last moment I was seeing red. Mickey’s face in that last shot really says it all. I won’t say more but that ending makes me so mad for so many reasons going forward. I also just hate that once again Ian and Mickey were feeling good amongst all the meds shit when they got home and again it had to be wrecked. For Mickey especially I feel like this poor kid really can’t ever expect good things to last because they never seem to for him. But you can see when he fights the guards how fiercely protective he is of this thing with Ian, that’s his one good thing and he won’t let it go for anyone. We’ve seen him so gentle with Ian the last few episodes and so scared, but that scared little kid and that fighter is still in there, and as angry as he as at Sammi he is absolutely terrified too, it breaks my heart.
Also, I just want to say regarding Sean (the older guy with Fiona), his stuff is really tough to watch even as someone who doesn’t have a background there, so I hope you take care of yourself while watching, because it is pretty heavy.
Seasons 4,5 and 6 are my favourite seasons. I don’t care for any of the others as much, personally. But I know others do like the earlier seasons and that a part of that may or may not be because of Jimmy/Steve.
If you're ever looking to mix things up with the type of stuff you're watching production wise, it'd be cool to see you react to Moral Orel sometime. The whole show is on here and the episodes are only like 13 minutes long. It's a claymation Adult Swim show, I binged it this weekend and for something that made me laugh so much it absolutely left me beyond emotional by the end. Fits the theme as this Shameless series on your channel, dealing with alcoholism, and characters we follow not necessarily being ones categorized as the "good guys" (kinda like it's always sunny in Philadelphia, if ya ever watched that show lol 💕)

So I have a mental illness, I was diagnosed as bipolar in error, now I know I have depersonalization derealization disorder. Anyway, when they had me on meds for bipolar disorder I felt exactly how they’re depicting Ian’s experience here. It kinda feels like time isn’t linear, it can speed up and slow down on a whim and you just kinda feel numb to everything. For me it meant that I was on the wrong meds and it’s possible that Ian is, I haven’t gotten that far in the series yet, but it’s really common for it to take some tweaking to get the meds and dosages right. I even had fainting spells when they had me on Lamictal which is a common med for bipolar disorder.

I've tried to watch Shameless 2 times but was put-off by it for various plot reasons, and last time I stopped halfway through ep 10 which was around a year ago. Totally forgot the MPs were after Ian, so when I saw that end scene... my jaw DROPPED. I hate Frank, but I was enraged at Sammi in a way I haven't been with him. Love your reactions, can't wait to see more!!
