Being born in 1975 I was too young to know Southern, I watched the late John Pertwee as Worzel Gumidge though.

Interesting that Southern rarely had an announcer saying what station this is and where it is broadcasting. It just let the amazing Background Music play!!

I think that when colour came to Southern ITV. They largely dispensed with the announcements. I don't remember them being made when I heard 'Southern Rhapsody. The viewers also had a say in keeping the start-up music from being changed. Good call, I say.

@@nigelcash5284 Definitely. It’s one of the most Iconic. It’s too bad TVS had to take over for 1982.

It's nice and clear for sure, in a way so many of the old recorded ones never were.
I've fond memories of the earlier b&w Southern startups from the 60s and 70s, with the film of scenes from Southern England. I guess that had to go with the advent of colour tv because it was not filmed in colour, and sadly no-one presumably wanted to go through the hassle and expense of refilming them. I seem to recall it had short film shots of Southampton docks, the Fawley oil refinery, Bournemouth beach, New Forest Ponies, Corfe Castle, Brighton Royal Pavilion, The White Cliffs of Dover, a Wealden farm gate scene and ending at Canterbury Cathedral, (Did I miss anything?)

What a beautiful piece. I'm a young American but it still gets me emotional. I envy the kids of that era that got to wake up early and listen to this every morning.

A very inspired 'rhapsody' by composer Richard Addinsell. Southern had a long coastline with the English Channel and the music was written with the sound of the waves in mind. Although there are more modern versions of this music, I have used the original score that Southern ITV viewers would have heard. The video was (deliberately) posted on 31st December 2021 as this was the 40th anniversary to the day. of Southern TVs last broadcast before Television South (TVS) took over the contract. Although Southern never broadcast in widescreen, this video is pretty much a recreation of what viewers would have seen. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video as that is what this is all about. Best wishes, Nigel.

I have seen the video of Southern leaving the air, and it's also very moving. As far as I know ITV doesn't have separate companies for each region anymore, which is sad to me. I like the idea of regions being separated, to be as local as you can get. That's what TV's all about, I think. I'm glad that videos like this exist so that people like me can experience what that was like. Thanks again!

Hi. Unfortunately, no. But, I have seen at least two videos on CZcams which feature this melody. If anyone has an HD copy, I would suggest that they make a video of it and post. All the best, Nigel.

Hi. This theme was purchased via ITunes... It's part of the 'Start the Day' compilation. I wish that they had made another with more startup themes. Oh well, c'est la vie. I tried to make the video as true to a recreation as possible - glad you enjoyed it. All the best, Nigel.

The theme is called 'Southern Rhapsody' and was written by Richard Addinsell, presumably commisioned by Southern TV in 1958 or 9. The original music is here on CZcams, from an album of Addinsell's work of (largely) film scores. It's a little different, but is just as magical, and was performed a few decades back at the Proms as a good example of modern English orchestral music.
