I craved for nasi lemak once and went to the nearest malay restaurant. Their menu has no written price but I continued to add sambal udang, sotong, and kerang on my plate. The total price was around rm 80 and I was shocked. I got only rm 30 cash 🤣 Well, I offered to pay cashless but the waiter was acting confused, there are many ppl watching and I started to sweat. Thankfully there is a malay couple comes to my rescue.. they offered to pay for my meal and proceeded to say "its ok, kami belanje. Anggap je rezeki hari ni".. I was like 😫😭😭 thank youuuu..

Tiger prawn is anywhere between RM40-RM60/kg at wet markets. Bigger size = higher price/kg. Lamb shank is expensive. For me, RM40 for that size of a lamb shank is definitely worth it, but I understand the feeling when you weren't expecting to spend that much over a meal, but had to fork out money anyway. The meat looks soft. Now I want to pujuk my husband to take me there.

*The food on your plate was more than enough for a family of 5. Husband, wife and 3 small children..and it's eaten on husband's payday ( + finally he received a salary increment after working like crazy for many many years)..hehe. Most locals don't even go near the lamb shank as it's too pricey and even on weddings if there's roast lamb served for the guests, we're only given slivers of that meat. Yea..small pieces only. When it comes to prawn, shockingly that was huge and we Malaysians never even had the chance to touch it before. What you had there was enough to make someone full for the next 3-4 days* 🤭🤭

  • @thulomanchay

Sometimes its better to ask the price first.
I had sambal goreng (the tempeh and long beans dish), terung (egg plant) and a bergedil (fried potato patties), and a serving of white rice, at a stall in an Arab Street coffee shop in Singapore.
    The price was S$17.00. (Rm51.00)
Not a huge shock but, the sting is there.
The server, with a calculator, worked out an average of 3 - 4 dollars per servings for the bill.
It was my sampling of that food, due to the popularity, and recommendations from friends.
There's always a queue at the stall, with each customer buying a few packets to take away, or placing order for their group.
Other than it being pricey, the food was done well, hence its popularity.
I often hear the adage "When the food is good, I don't mind paying the price."
The next time I go there, I'll be more careful of what I am willing to pay for.
    Probably just rendang and rice.

Fyi, Hameediyah particularly their main restaurant in Chulia St is known for being the most expensive Nasi Kandar in this country as far as I knew. In fact their branches prices like Ampang and others are equally quite high. But again they are known for their original recipe and expensive spices used. They mix their own spices instead of buying a ready made spice from others. Thats why we recommend you to try Yusof Restaurant in Paya Terubung in another video of yours just to get another dimension.

Nasi kandar wasn't 'well known for it's pricey dish'. If you order a piece of beef, one fried egg, vege, 2 ladyfinger + extra rice it won't cost more than rm10 in Penang. If you replace the beef to the whole thigh and drumstick, the price was around rm10-12. That's a reasonable price. What made nasi kandar expensive was seafood.
