I moved from a city to a farm setting and always wanted chickens. The initial cost to build a proper coop and the time to do it was important to me so that I knew the birds would be safe. Of course when I was done building it, a local farmer kept telling me that I would give up on it because of the routine care required or that I'd have snakes or foxes or anything getting in or going wrong. I ignored the negative comments and my birds are doing great.
The experience of predators is inevitable. They were warning you and they were correct. Usually it takes years before something goes terribly wrong and ignoring his advice is just plain stupid. You should be prepared for a full flock loss as once it starts it will happen regularly, it just depends on when the predators find them and when they do they will know there is "free food" there and will be back. Just be prepared and take measures to regulate losses.
"Don't be lazy" is VERY good advice for all areas of life, not just poultry farming!! Great job on spreading that word!
Hi Dr. Daniel.
I am a 32 year old Kenyan from Nairobi.
My family especially my dad was very discouraging when I pitched ideas on starting a farm. Diseases and lack of agricultural background was the reason.
Around February 2020 I made this bold step and started with 200 DOC. The first time I was naive and I had a good share of mortalities as a result of diseases and attacks from predators, never the less I managed to see through some of the chicken until point of laying.
Same year on September I made some radical changes and it included replacing my farm boy, improving the structure, use of technology in order to making process of brooding perfect. This time I would do things differently and I started to incubate my own eggs. Out of 8 trays of eggs I got 185 chicks. The chicks are currently 4 weeks old and I have just lost 2 chicks so far (chicks were lame after hatching them using incubators)
I currently incubate more eggs since I have received overwhelming demand of DOC, MOC from farmers, I sell breeding corckrels and I also sell improved kienyeji eggs to my family for consumption. Yes! it is very ironical mentioning I am selling the eggs to the people who doubted my aspirations at the first, but it is not cheap. It cost them 4.5$ per tray.
Some of my siblings have now grown interest in poultry farming as a result. I try as much as I can to educate other farmers interested in poultry start up. Part of my inspiration to start my CZcams channel was derived from your videos and need to tell my story in the near future.
My channel is Roostera Poultry Kenya

I wanted to start a farm a few years ago and someone with experience killed my dream by stating how difficult it will be and what not. But I guess that was partially my fault. I shouldn't have listened. Anyway, I'm here again pursuing my dream. This time, I still didn't have the helpful info I needed but I'm starting anyway. I Knew I would learn along the way. Willing to take the risks involved. God led me to this channel and I thank you for all your lessons and hard work.. Keep up the good work my brother

I want start but people are scaring me that the chicken will die,is true you may lose half of your birds before they mature.
Daniel how effective is the local made feed, I want to start this business so I was thinking of buying soya beans since som1 advised me to use local made feed since the 1 from shops is quit expensive, what would you say about this, are u using the commercial feed or you make your own feed
I use a mixture of the two. I made a video about it, check it out. You want to make a balance of quality and cost
What about regulations? I’m sure in Uganda it’s a little more lax than say NYC .
Farm Up do inspectors come to visit ? how far is your marketplace from the farm? Or customers buy at the farm?
Not much profit on raising chickens in the first place

What are you using for internet access? Satellite? Broadband?
Greetings from New York
Farm Up I see you in Uganda countryside so I was curious . I dated a beautiful girl from Uganda years ago, but she got deported before I could marry her .The women are amazing . Very respectful and honorable
I will get 2 or 3 chicks in a few days😊😊😄
👍
I started this year but people are telling diseases and thieves
I love poultry farming, but in my country we don't have feed, so I want to know how much does it cost for a bag of feed, feeders and drinkers in your country? Cause I'm living in Liberia, and another thing how much will it also cost me to transport a bag of feed from your place to my? the best
It's not cost effective to transport feed from one country to another, unless you're buying in very big quantities. A better option would be to mix your own feeds
I'm only asking for one bag, cause if you know the cost of one bag then you know how to buy in high quantity, may be a twenty foot container including transportation,(shipment) cost from Kenya to Liberia
If I had to buy from Ghana, what is the cost for a bag and what could be the cost of transportation for a bag?
@@corneliusmtarr1984 feed wise it depends on the type u want .. chick starter or adult feed. And transportation in nt sure it could be by air or land or if uno any cargo driver trabelling to ghana. Contact boris b farms . Check them on google u can find alot frm them
Is vaccine really important in poultry farming?? And also, do any (clean) water is good for them to drink??
@@jeremiahidris5230 thanks, and I heard changing of water source make the the cough (I mean like rain water to well water or underground water)how much is it true.. Thnks in advance🙏
You haven't lost a single chicken because you are a doctor hahaha
