What happens when you put 2 of the most popular wrestling superstars together in the late 80s? You get the "Mega Powers". Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage had incredible fan support in the old WWF, and the decision was made to bring these two huge favourites together to form a tag team, The Mega Powers. When Hulk Hogan saved Randy Savage from a 3 on 1 situation on Saturday Night's Main Event in 1987, the 2 men would become a force within the WWF that had fans cheering with approval.
When Randy Savage won the WWF championship at WrestleMania IV, it turned out that the Macho Man was actually getting set up to go head to head with Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania V. To get to their destination, the Mega Powers had a tough on-screen breakup that was built up over months and months. Fans tuned in to see how the story would play out and, ultimately, the Mega Powers would explode on Pay Per View, drawing big numbers in the process while generating further revenue for the World Wrestling Federation.
This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at The Mega Powers in the WWF. Topics covered include:
02:06 - Saturday Night's Main Event: October 3rd 1987
04:01 - The Mega Powers first (untelevised) matches
06:43 - Randy Savage wins the WWF Championship at WrestleMania IV
09:21 - The Mega Powers at SummerSlam 88
12:19 - The Mega Powers officially break up on The Main Event
14:09 - The Mega Powers Explode at WrestleMania V
16:12 - Randy Savage becomes The Macho King
- Much More!

Thanks so much for having me man.
This is still my favorite storyline of all time
@ItsStillRealToMe DamnIt the lust in Hogans eyes was running wild
I agree I remember this like it was yesterday
Same. From this era at least.
Jesus Christ I was watching this video and thinking to myself matter which era it was hulk Hogan always look like he was in his 40s and then I looked down and saw your comment!
I like Hulk Hogan BUT I ABSOLUTELY CAN'T STAND IT WHEN HE DOES THAT WHEN SOMEONE ELSE WINS THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT title he stands in the ring and walks around to try to get all the attention! As much as I can't stand the Ultimate Warrior! Hogan again did the same thing! Walking around the ring when it should have been the Ultimate Warrior's moment
It’s funny how hogan no matter the timeline always looked like he was in his 40’s
Yeah it's really really wierd
Roids
Vampire/reptilian.
Yeah, he lost his hair kinda early....😬😂
@@mitchellima4736 not really...when you pump, your body full of cocaine and testosterone it will do that.
Man wrestle mania 5 was so good. I remember it so well. My dad bought a used VCR the weekend after mania at a yard sale and inside was a recorded VHS of the PPV. I thought that was the coolest thing I probably watched it 50 times that year lol
Meanwhile the guy who sold it to you was at home later that day going where did I put my WrestleMania V tape 😂
That’s awesome!😁
Thats so cool man. I love reading comments like this. Reminds me of all the wrestling ppvs i watched with my grandfather. He got me into wresling in 1990 when i was 5. U have a good day.
What an awesome story!!!!! That's so cool!
That’s gold, man. Big bonus in the VCR!
Hogan copped a feel on Elizabeth in the middle of the ring. After that, Jesse Ventura started calling him Lust Hogan and the Luster 🤣🤣
Macho Man's intensity during the Main Event heel turn was epic! "You guys got me in the back seat!"
This is one of the greatest stories in wrestling history. Fans were emotionally invested & it was partially based on reality. Randy was so over he could have easily carried the company for a year+ as a monster heel. They went with a heel world champion who in kayfabe "couldn't speak English" for a year in Yokozuna, & he deserved it. Fans knew that in Randy, the business would never see a personality like his again in their lifetime. The way he carried himself. His robes, his wrestling style, his fashion, his charisma, his swagger were all unmatched. He was so original it could not be duplicated. His first heel run, his Mega Powers heel run, & The Macho King heel run were all his best work. His promos alone for WM 5 were gold!!!!
If there was a CZcams award show, you would definitely win best documentary series
He’s the best!👍😁
Agreed. This stuff is gold.
One must often wonder how many times "brother" was said in their conversations.
And how much cocaine was consumed
imagine if they said "Bra" instead ;)

Dale Holbert asking the real questions now
@@daleholbert3111 i was about to same thing brother!
"Always got to get in your hotdoggin and your grandstanding hogan yeah"
But Hogan IS a hotdog, covered in mustard and ketchup.
@@somerando4354 😆
Macho man was never the man sorry but it's true Hogan was brother
Lmao
Rest In Peace to both Randy Savage and Elizabeth Hulette
People always forget that the Mega Powers was about 2 things. Giving Hulk a break at the top and building a big money match for Hulk. Randy and Hulk already feuded in 85 so this was a way to put a fresh spin on a match that was already done, and it worked perfectly. People always says Hulk shouldn’t have beaten Randy, but in the end, this was always a way to make sure Hulk got back into the title picture in the most epic way possible.
Wasn’t it about him going to film No Holds Barred. Crazy if he didn’t film that movie, he would have held it from 1984 to 90 at Wrestlemania 6
I was a fan of both Hogan and Savage as the Mega Powers in the WWF Golden Era. Both of those dudes were pioneers of star-power and hands down, they were awesome
Except Savage was better. In every way. Love me some Macho Madness!
ShadowAngel and in what way did that affect a consumer of the product? That’s great for Vince in the fed and Ted in Dubya-cee-dubya, but him being a better draw does not mean anything to anyone watching the product. I see you always come back to this argument on every video you comment on, and yes drawing power matters for the benefit of the business, but it has zero impact on rating their ability to work in the ring or with the stick. Often drawing comes down to the right place at the right time.
Always rooted for the underdawg and when Savage lost, even though i knew it was coming, damn, was still heartbroken!!
@@andrew12bravo21 but it's typical WWF
Macho Man vs Hulk Hogan for WrestleMania V, could not get any better for a main event for 1989.
The build up for a year was excellence in story telling.
This was when I was just getting into wrestling...great to look back on it.
Me too to me this was still the biggest angle as it was my first lol...
When I look in your eyes Hogan I see it, I see the lust in your eyes for Elizabeth 😂😂
DIG IT!
Oh yeeeahhh...classic storylines!!!
And he had the proof on video!!
Savage wasn't wrong though was he?
@@syteanric -- He was not wrong indeed!!
The Mega yeah, the Mega yeah, the Megapowers!
... This is how you build storylines for main event pay offs
Just wish Hogan wasn't always seen as superior to Randy during the storyline
Great writers back then
one of the greatest moments in wwe history is when randy went off screen after arguing with hulk, hulk pleading to liz to talk to randy, and then BOOM💥 macho hits hogan with the title belt.
That’s a hell of a bump Elizabeth took
The best thing about this storyline is that you can show the clips to anyone, any age, speaking any language and they would get what's going on.
Not only one of my favorite wresting channels... one of my favorite CZcams channels overall; simply the best man!
Macho Man was my favorite wrestler as a child, I loved him as a babyface, I loved him as The Macho King heel. He was such a great talent. Fact: Macho Mans year long run as champion was a very successful period for WWF. The Savage/Elizabeth multi-year storyline is still 1 of the greatest ever told
Love your bios man! Especially the remix themes! Keep up the great work
Lust in your eyes has to be the best line of all time.
Was always way more of a Macho Man. Hes in my top 3 all time. Charisma oozed from his style
Macho is greatness. The way he made so many other stars and was willing to put guys over spoke volumes for he who was as a person and a professional.
💯 %
Not sure if you've seen the "no more baby oil" story between him and Andre The Giant. It was pretty funny!
Oh yea...Elizabeth just ooooozzzed manly, charismatic testosterone!!
As an adult I fully agree, but I think I was 8 or 9 when the Mega Powers exploded, and I was a complete Hogan mark.
Macho Man had an incredible WM special match record:
2 Kept IC
3 Lost IC
4 Won World
5 Lost World
6 King
7 King retirement
8 Won World
9 Announcer
10 Falls Count Anywhere
The cream of the crop always rises to the top...YEAH
You know these two didn't get along with each other in real life
Ok beastie...
Isaiah Winbrone they did at times, but yeah their relationship was rocky mainly because Savage blamed Hogan and Linda for his and Elizabeth’s divorce.
Cup of coffee in the big time
Hulk antagonized Randy Savage with his constant show of effection to Ms ELizabeth knowing Randy was truly nuts especially when it came to Liz
It had a big effect on you, then?
Omg you do realise it was an angle right? Vince and co were plotting this story out
@80's Slasher Library After Hours hehehehe👍
That's why I wonder if it was all at work on Randy if Hogan and even Vince McMahon allowed this to happen in order to purposely get Randy riled up
Im also in the grey area; i mean: Macho Man was frantically jealous irl + many wrestlers've stated that there wasnt a distinguishable line between the man and the wrestling character (MM) + Elizabeth takes a tremendous hit, also when MM throws her to the floor. Could've fooled me, even after kayfabe.
This was my first feud as a kid when I fell in love with wrestling. Listening to Conrad Thompson and Bruce Prchard's podcast he said to him a a kid it was the biggest feud he ever saw, but to Bruce Andre the Giant was still the biggest. I guess it's a generation thing because this to me was my first and always the biggest, then HBK and Bret( I couldn't figure out who to cheer for I refused to boo Bret even after he went Anit American) to my teen years Austin and Rock altough by then I picked Austin but it was still huge. When I was little I was totally behind Hulk and cried like a baby when Liz got hurt and then Randy smacking Hulk. To me this will always be the biggest and look how these stories were built over a year much different then today's standards. Great Video as always wrestling Bios you always deliver and this now my Favorite video of yours since to me this was truly the greatest.
As a kid I was team hulk but as a 30 year old team macho.
I remember seeing that story when I was young. Great stuff.
Hogan made wrestling look fake, because all his fights always had the same script: Hogan takes a beating, gets strangled, and just when the referee is about to end the match, Hogan revives, shaking, receives a punch to the head, stops shaking, receives another punch, points the finger, gives his opponent the boot, drops the leg, wins...
Savage was protective of Elizabeth? I don't blame him, she was smoking.
@@jrsmith1998 Ewwww
Yes she was...but no excuse to get locked backstage from time to time in a room alone! Thinking about this every time macho man comes up, still shaking my head...felt sorry for her
@@mackredsnapper are you kidding me? Sherri was a beautiful, tall, dark woman. 👅👅
@Blaze Mordecai Yeah she was smoking when she was with the NWO.
@@IronmanM So true however one makes ya think after seeing how things ended for Elizabeth with Luger maybe Randy had his reasons. It seems the prettier a woman is they are often more evil and use their looks to get what they want. I'm not saying Elizabeth was that way plus she always had a sense to be innocent even after WCW turned her heel. And it played well when NWO started and her love for Randy started to reemerge and the horsemen kicked her out but when she got with Luger look at the end result :(
Ultimate Warriors two best matches are against Hogan & Savage.
Think the cage match with Rude was up there as well
The end of this video made me laugh so hard 😂😂😂
Thanks so much!
Hibiki TMD who are you thanking, my guy?
Its really sad the Miss Elizabeth hasnt gone into the HOF yet. It also says a lot when only Bret Hart thanked Savage for his run as champion and all his work up to that point
I mean, she probably would go in the hall of fame in like 2 years. I mean there's still big stars that aren't in the HOF like Batista and other wrestlers
@@josephgrevnin2288 lol..Batista??
Batista? He seemed to generic to me. Not for his matches but maybe his starpower imo.
Elizabeth will never go into the Hall of Fame for the same reason that Owen Hart never will. Because her family will not allow it. They blame the wrestling business for her death
In November 1987, I attended a Saturday Night's Main Event taping in Seattle. The main event was Hulk Hogan vs King Kong Bundy with Bobby Heenan and Andre the Giant in his corner. But the best match by far was Bret Hart vs Randy Savage. They were 2 of the best performers ever.
One of the greatest storylines in wrestling, thank you for this.
The episode of Saturday Night's Main Event where the Macho Man turned against Hulk Hogan is probably the most epic moment to me in wrestling history. Followed closely by Hulk Hogan joining The NWO.
Brilliant.
This was my small, two year window into American wrestling👍🏻
Story on the Fabulous Freebirds would be soooo good! There is a lot to work with there. Please please please. 🙏🙏🙏
The goal of Macho as Champ to become an arch rival for Hulk, is just genius! (no, not Poffo!).
Credit to you for having a full Hogan video where you compliment Hulk, instead of knocking him.
Technically it is still Poffo. Just, Randy Poffo
Say what you want about a lot of the wrestling mega stars of the 80s not being able to put on 5 star classics, their promos were legendary!
Well they were all coked up so it makes sense lol
@@tiredoftherightleft5644 ooooo yeah!
True dat. I don't watch much now a days, but when i was a kid back then I did. And the little i've seen last 20 years, it's terrible promos
Yes, & that's why they were & still are megastars, & the flippy highflyers of today, will always be indy darlings, at best.
@@brandonpage7087 AJ Styles is really good.
Your ability to pump up quality filled videos in a short span of time is simply unparalled man..👏👏👏
they could have kept savage face, or have him be more of a tweener. the whole time he was a heel in 89 and 90, I always wanted him to be a face again.
God, I still miss Randy Savage.
I see a new vid from you: I click. I see a new vid from you with Randy Savage: I click faster and comment my approval
Same
You left out Savage telling Jesse Ventura that he had some "new business" after Survivor Series 88.
This was the golden age of professional wrestling and will likely never be seen again, I'm glad I grew up with it.
lol its so surreal going back and re-living these moments from my childhood. looking back on it now as an adult, its so crystal clear that The Macho Man was the better performer, but obviously with Hogan's popularity, larger than life personality, and overall marketability, he was not going to be kept down for long. Just a shame though because Savage had all of these things as well and I honestly feel like he should have been made as more of a threat than what he actually was.
Macho Man was a true work horse his technical skills was entertaining and his music the grauation theme always put smiles on his true fans faces
My favorite storyline/storytelling of all time.
Wow Miss Elizabeth was so pretty I see why Savage was so protective of her. He saw what others didn't he knew she was a virgin(spiritually) and a wrong guy will come along and have her lost and turned out*cough Lex Luger*. Such a shame she left this earth under those unfortunate conditions as well as many other wrestlers/valets dealing with drug addiction.
As weird as it is to hear these stories, you can’t say his protective nature wasn’t somewhat justified. Wrestling is filled with stories of ladies in the business leaving their significant others for one of the other boys. Benoit/Woman, Lesnar/Sable, Jarrett/Karen Angle...that’s the by product of always being around each other.
Lol Elizabeth was beautiful, but she was no angel. She was a woman with agency and Savage was a possessive semi-loon.
Sherri was more beautiful than Liz.
Late 80s and 90 where the greatest times to grow up at. Wrestling was amazing, NBA with Michael Jordan, Football 🏈 was crazy, HipHop started coming up, Michael Jackson, soccer with Romario etc best time ever. Thank god I grew up then
Good stuff as usual! I really enjoy the quality of which you cover wrestling. There's so much I didn't pick up on because I was just a kid watching at the time, but you do a fantastic job rounding out these stories and biographies.
YES!!! I am a 14yr old kid again watching the MAGIC moment when these two giants of the ring became the Ultimate Tag Team!!! Hulk and The Macho Man together?!? I was like, "Are you kidding me? This is the greatest moment of my life!". Bring on Wrestlemania!
Enjoy your childhood while it lasts, kid. It'll be the best years of your life. Trust me.
I know this is off topic about the wrestling bios of Mega Powers, but I had to say that I really enjoy your videos I watched everyone and man the knowledge and history you have is truly incredible keep the bios up man. Mega Powers
Second half of 80s to the early 90s was the best time to grow up. Good times. Wrestling events competed with holiday get togethers. Definitely miss the good ol days.
Thank you wrestling bios helping all of us in this pandemic with the great content I hope you can cover the ultimate maniacs in the near future did the mega powers ever win the wwf tag team championship
They never won the tag titles. I could be wrong, but I don't think that they were in a tag title match.
Great story but it bothers me that as the world champion, Randy still played second fiddle to Hogan. Randy was a workhorse in the 80s and should be given a lot more credit for his contributions. RIP to an absolute legend.
Man how I wish they would of really let Savage get over and run with the title with a win over Hogan here. Would have been awesome. Savage will always be one of my top 5 favorites of all time. But unfortunately the WWF was so protective of Hogan still at this time.
If it is true, that Vince McMahon preferred the buff guy with the Ultimate Warrior nipping at Hulk Hogan's heels.. that's why I think McMahon preferred to try and get Warrior over than to keep the belt on Randy savage, unfortunately.. with Warrior beating hogan.. I think it would have been a good couple years of the warrior and Savage as one and two
Even as Savage had the title, I always thought that Hogan was #1 in the company.
I had the same feeling when ultimate warrior was the wwf champ
Hulk was planet WWF
He was. Hands down
No wonder Savage was in his shadows
That’s so obvious it’s not worth talking about. Hogan was the face of the company. There were times Austin didn’t have the belt during the attitude era. But he was obviously always the focal point of the company. Same with Cena
Great channel! Loving your videos so far. The mega powers was the first story line I remember!
Macho Man, Miss Elizabeth, and Hogan got me to love ❤ wrestloring for life. I was seven years old. One of my favorite story lines of all time and still one of my favorites. I remember watching this with my Dad 👨 on television 📺.
👍before the video even begins!
Oh YEAHHHH it's time for the Mega Powers to run wild on youuuuuuuuu
Even as a 10 year old, I couldn't stand Hogan! I was cheering for Savage!
ME TOO!
Totally! I was sick of Hogan and legit sad that Hogan won at WM5, but you totally knew that was coming. That said, it was one of the WWF's best angles ever for Savage's slow burn. The bump that Miss Elizabeth took in that match with Akeem and BBM followed by the backstage fight was fricking epic, though!
Same here man !!
I agree was tired of seeing Hogan win as usual 💤
I’m not sure what others think but I have a theory - could be that Randy was over protective of Liz became she has issues with alcohol or drugs even at that early date ? That he had to keep her from going over the edge ? Was that why she managed to get herself in the situation with Lex so quickly ? Any thoughts on this?
I dont blame Randy at all for being protective. She was stunning.. The only female on the road also with all these half naked roid heads. No changing room at times. The wandering eyes would have been rife.
Love how you breakdown these videos man, top class 👍
Fantastic mix of both themes!
You know well what you are doing!
Respect!!!!
The Macho Man was NEVER the heel here imo. Hogan had his hands all over a man's WIFE, he had every right to be pissed off!
This was the genius of this story line it literally changes the older you get.... Hogan definitely was the heel here but as a kid you think Savage turned on him
@@PicklezTV Yes!! as a kid we were led to back Hogan, but watching this fued again with my daughter I'm team Savage all the way!!
It's amazing story telling by the writers to give the points of view of both Macho Man and Hogan and your definitely making a strong point of Macho Man being the face and Hogan being the heel as we have all grown up and time has moved on. The crazy part is that art was imitating life and the stories that everyone who was apart of the WWE at that time has spoken on the real life treatment of Elizabeth by the Macho Man that sounds highly emotionally and mentally abusive in a number of ways.
Oh, bull hockey. Hogan never made any advances on Elizabeth.
And People forget Hogan was doing very heelish things and tried to make it seem like Randy was the crazy one assuming things..
Good times! I think I was 16 at the time of WM4. It was so much fun.

This is pretty much where I jumped on board with the WWF, at least that I can recall. I vividly remember watching that Saturday Night Main Event where Hulk left the match to help Elizabeth
Good stuff right here. Nice work mate.
Macho Man was Jealous of Elizabeth but Macho Man was a great champion should have been a Champion for a long time
He was champion for a year
Love the channel mate always in depth stuff you really do ya research and have enjoyed a lot of your vids 💪 💥
I cant blame Savage from keeping Elizabeth from the "boys" I mean we have all heard the stories of what happened back then to some of the ladies in WWF...
Like what ? I'm just curious and haven't heard those stories 😅
And then there's Sable... 😂😂😂
Exactly. For all the talk about what Savage did, and some can say he should've have had her around (which is a different argument), that WWF locker room was the wild, wild, west.
Possibly my favorite WWF-WWE storyline ever
11:15 was my first time watching pro wrestling. I was 12 and caught SNME by accident when I tuned in intending to watch Saturday Night Live.
This is still great stuff! I miss the 80’s & 90’s!
Hulk used and played Randy and Liz, just to get his hands back onto the WWF championship. it was all a plot and Hogan had the patience, shrewdness, and poise to play the long game. Even got Mean Gene, Koko, Hillbilly Jim, and Hercules in on his shenanigans, playing them a bit too. lol Hogan was heel long before 1996 lol.
They should have put the heavy weight belt on Hulk I.C on Macho and the tag team on them both and had a mega power event where they defended individual and tag team belts. Wound have been sick
