Hi, friends! I hope you enjoy the video!! I just finished reading "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, and I thought the opening lines were another fantastic example of using abstract writing in fiction: "Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon..." I'd love to hear if you have other examples from classics you've read. 🙂 I also recommend watching this short video of Star Trek's Gene Roddenberry's most important storytelling question: czcams.com/video/ymSORAIbeTc/video.html

Hi Nicole, How Ironic that you talk about Jack Hart's book in this episode. I just bought his book, Story Craft, and haven't gotten that far into it yet but now I am all the more determined to read it on purpose, paying attention to lessons like this one. Thank you for sharing today. God bless.

Wow, Nicole, I think my brain nearly exploded trying to embrace what you are saying! Having spent years churning out boring technical documentation, which is very far from being abstract, my attention now is directed at blog posts and web pages to attract (and keep) readers' attention all the way through to the call-to-action. I guess one could label this as copywriting, but can it incorporate The Ladder of Extraction into it?

Hi, Allan, haha, it is a complex topic to explain in just 12 minutes. But, yes, absolutely! I think with blog posts/copywriting we can fall into the trap of staying at the top of the ladder -- just telling our readers about a subject. But we can make it interesting and applicable to them through stories (the bottom of the ladder). This is the blog post I mentioned in the video that dives deeper into that: nicolebianchi.com/two-magic-words-that-will-strengthen-your-writing/ Hope you find it helpful!
