  • If you told me I could only have one GMRS Radio, I'd pick the best handheld one, and for me that's the Wouxun KG-935G. It's got everything, great signal strength and sound quality, more stored frequency and tone combinations than any other handheld out there, and a feature set you're going to find super useful like tone scanning and multiple scan groups.

    The KG-935G is currently on backorder but I went ahead and paid for it so I get one when B2wR's get their shipment in. Which they just told me that they're guessing will be about 2-3wks (+/-).
    I also just paid for my license last night and I feel confident that I made a good choice for my first radio. Since I've been bitten and there's no known cure. I can only curve my anxiousness by looking forward to my next treatment.
    To which a couple of YT radio Dr.'s recommended the Wouxun KG-1000G shot to ease my suffering once I acclimate with the KG-935G dose. This bite sounds pretty serious, like I might end up with a home base station and possibly even my own repeater. Pray for me 🙏

    It is a nice radio. Also in testing it transmits at the highest wattage compared to other radios that are GMRS certified. It really has a quality feel in the hand. I also have the kg-905 and was a little disappointed that it didn't have noaa so I added the 935 to the collection. Really as mentioned the usb-c charging is the only thing the 935 is missing except maybe built in bluetooth for programming via app or connectivity to other bluetooth earbuds.

    • @MattKester
      @MattKester  Před 2 lety +3

      If someone put Bluetooth connectivity into an HT like that, I think it would be a huge game changer. Like, how cool would it be if there was just a standard protocol for repeater information, like how we can download .kmz and .gpx files for mapping information and use them between different mapping programs, and whenever you looked up the info on a repeater in your phone, you could then just drop it right into your radio and be good to go!?!?

    I'm a new GMRS junkie. I've started with the Baofeng HT's and have a couple of Baofeng UV-9G's IP 67 rated radios. I just got a wouxon KG-XS-20G and using it temporarily as a Base Station. When the KG-1000G comes in, the XS20G goes into the Explorer. As far as a HT, I have A Wouxon KG-916 coming in which is one of the newest offerings from Wouxun. Yeah, GMRS IS an addiction. Try taking a look at AZGMRS.com. They are the Arizona GMRS club based here in the valley. There is a small membership fee paid annually, $35 I believe, but that does get you access to their local repeaters which feature weekly "nets" where members get together and converse about topics and tech questions. Another good resource is mygmrs.com. There you'll find listings for all the open repeaters and their tones. Depending how far east in Mesa you are you might have trouble recaching some of the more popular repeaters I use, but it's definietely worth a shot to see if you can hit Towers 575. It's the most lively of all the local ones.

      As far as the massive feature set and channel memory, no. About the only two notable HT releases since the 935 have been the kg-s88g, which has a more compact size, better receiver and transmitter, but isn’t a power user radio like this, it’s more geared for active outdoors types. The other one is the GMRS Pro from BTech, with its gps beaconing and two way messaging capabilities, but I see you mentioned grid down scenarios in another post, the GMRS pro might not be the best bet for you since it requires a smartphone to get maximum functionality out of it.

    • @MattKester
      @MattKester  Před 2 lety +7

      Technically, yes. However, the FCC doesn’t have a fleet of detectives monitoring the National airwaves, their enforcement is typically targeted towards individuals engaging in more nefarious activities like purposefully using their radio to interfere with the traffic of others over long periods of time. While I’m certainly not advocating you break the law here, there’s probably a more significant chance of being struck by lightening on a clear day, whilst being bitten by a shark onboard an airplane that’s about to crash into a mountain… if you know what I’m getting at.

    • @MattKester
      @MattKester  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Negative, it’s Part 95 certified, so your transmit frequencies are locked in to the GMRS 462-467 MHz spectrum. You can receive 70cm and 2m all day, just can’t talk out. If you want that capability, go for the KG-UV9H, which is the dual band HT this model is derived from. It all all the same amazing features, but can actually talk out on both bands.
