  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen laid out plans to combat the energy crisis and the ongoing response to Russia in her annual State of the European Union speech on Wednesday.
Von der Leyen announced a cap on the revenues of electricity production companies and a crisis contribution from fossil fuel producers. She said the measures will raise an additional €140 billion (140 billion USD).
The EU chief criticized past subsidies for fossil fuels, and called for greater investment in renewable energy. To this end, she announced an additional €3 billion euros to help build a future hydrogen market.
She said it was crucial that the EU rid itself of the dependency on Russian oil and gas. Since the Russian invasion, imports of Russian now make up just 9% of EU imports, down from a previous 40%.
Amid praise for the EU's rapid response to the Ukraine crisis, von der Leyen furthermore stressed that the EU's support for Ukraine will remain "unshakeable".

@@alexstorm2749 He is referring to Britain and the Suez canal crisis and drawing a comparison between the Russia and Ukraine war currently being fought. He may or may not be right about the Suez canal, but the Russian empire only really changed hands and became the USSR. It expanded after WW2 then fell in the 90s. The 90s was characterised by a capitalist economic system that indentured undeveloped Nations and some of the former USSR states covertly. Putin is a Recidivist. His imperal empire building has been premised on puppet governments and Kleptocracy. Until Ukraine had its revolution of dignity and expelled Russia corruption and exposed its hegemonic pseudo empire for what it is. This war was initially Putin trying to regain control and subvert the government of Ukraine and its citizenry. To bring them back into the fold so to speak. But they said No and chose Democracy. And now we see exactly what is going on. Control of the Ukrainian export and logistics industry would have handed him power over parts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. So yes, he is right in that regard.

BTW, endless sanctions (since 2014) made Russia one of the TOP exporters of food and revived Russian agricultural industry. Sanctions only made Russia stronger and MUCH MORE self-sufficient and self-reliant. Plus, brought Russia and China (world’s 2nd economy) MUCH closer together.

Unfortunately that eu policy maker never earned her merit to be in that position, she was put there by a drunken man, behind the doors of a building there in Brussels, the inept policy makers in the tiny eu mafia institution should ask hostile America for independence, before we go down to the gutter with them, the problem is also that those inept policy makers did not ask the average Europeans from our own perspective countries if we wanted to sanction Russian resources, because tiny insignificant eu has no resources, that's right, zero resources, nothing, caput, Russia our neighbor and trusted business partner has been helping us to build Europe, hostile America is far far away and not our neighbor, America's plan is to destroy all European countries, using us like their slaves/proxy's to attack Russia and eventually China, because America is jealous and has evil envy for Russia and China, America is not interested in eu because they know we are insignificant.

Ursula von der Leyen didn't announce any plans to increase the mount of renewable energy being generated.
She also didn't announce any plans to get people to change the type of energy they rely on, for example if people heat the homes with gas and cook with gas, then they would need to change the boiler and the cooker, for an electric one, but Ursula von der Leyen didn't announce any plans to help people make that change.
And most people in Europe rent their home from a landlord. The landlord decides the heating system and the tenant just has to pay the bills. You need to incentivize the landlords to install alternative heating that is not gas as well as cooker that are not gas.

Incentives are human-based and companies are run and invested in by humans. This is just a legalized means of theft. Although highly inefficient, it would be better to provide direct cash subsidies to those who can least afford the higher prices.

This is dumbest solution. Just delink electricity pricing with gas and stop trading of electricity and gas in EU market. The profits are mainly due to buying at the contract price and selling at spot market price. There is no real supply issue yet but prices increase based on market speculation. Sweden uses almost zero gas in electricity production and yet they need to pay Nordpool price that is based on gas spot prices. This is just illogical and politicians need to understand basics before coming up with some short term fix that increases suffering in the long term.
