  • This video will spotlight the genus Echinopsis (Easter Lily cactus) under the Cactacae family. Echinopsis is one of the biggest genus especially with other genus now included under this classification. They are comparatively easier to take care of compared to other types of cactus. In this video, I will talk a little about Echinopsis, show examples of the different forms and a little bit about their care based on my experience.

    Thank you for showing us your gorgeous Echinopsis collection and teaching us about their care.
    I have found that cacti are prone to dropping their flower buds when their position in relation to their light source is changed, so I don't move or rotate them after the buds form until they bloom. This just happened to my Thanksgiving cactus. All the mature buds it had when I brought it home opened beautifully, but it dropped all of the buds still forming. Now it seems to be getting some new little buds, so I'll be careful & not move it.

    "Rainbow Burst" would be a hybrid seed strain name. Plants from this strain would be variable in form and colour, hence the "rainbow" moniker. Latin names for cacti are ever changing and confusing but mostly very simple. The genus name: Echino = hedgehog. Opsis = appearance. That's a wonderful description...Of just about every cactus! The species name comes next and usually describes the flower or spine colour, the plant's form, the location where the plant grows, or the name of the European person who "discovered" the plant and decided to name it. Common Latin names for colours are: Flava - yellow, aurata - golden or orange, viridi - green, alba - white, rubra - red. Latin names make descriptions easier and more concise. It's much easier and quicker to call a plant Echinopsis Sanguiniflora than to call it "a cactus that looks like a hedgehog with blood coloured flowers." Hope this helps a little. I don't mean to be patronising, just giving you information most plant books don't give or explain.
    Looking at your photo I thought at first you were Mexican, then I heard your voice and now realise you're from the Philippines.

    I agree with you Ana, one of the first cacti that someone should have is Echinopsis👍☺️. Yours are very beautiful 😍💯💕. I'm very new at cacti, I've had only a few Gymnocalycium and Lobivia flowers last year, but yesterday I saw my first Echinopsis subdenudata flowers: It was marvelous! So big and pure white! And my Echinopsis hybrid surprised me being peach colour a few weeks before and both are making more buds. So rewarding and easy to care for. And they give a lot of flowers. The only 'bad new' is that they fade in one day🥴. Have a good day in Las Vegas😘☮️🌵💖!

      @@CactusCaffeine My first cacti flower was from a Gymnocalycium anisitsii last year. I bought very little cacti when I started my collection three years ago, so the first to bloom have been the Gymnos. This spring I'm seeing Rebutias, Echinopsis and Notocactus for my very first time and the Frailea is almost ready to open. Great memories! I always say that I got interested in Cacti thanks to your videos and Daz, Clyde and Lyn 😜👌💕.

    Hurray, another genus video. I think I'm really starting to like Echinopsis. Chris just got me a premade bowl arragement that has a few in it so my collection has now grown. Love the subdenuata fuzzies or domino. Oh man all the names. I'm a biologist and come from a background mostly of zoology. Once I began to dabble in botany I was amazed at the chaos, fighting and name changes back and forth. No one can agree on anything and we growers don't know the names of our plants cause of it. This doesn't happen nearly as much in zoology and I'm guessing probably not so much in the other kingdoms either. Anyway, you've got a lovely collection and I enjoyed seeing and learning about all the echinopsis.

It's not really a lot of rain during the winter. But should it get 'zero' water (which means put it under an umbrella or shelter)?

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 3 lety +1

      Repotting depends on how fast every cactus grows. But if a cactus is hardly growing or flowering for 2 years, I repot to change the soil. Southern California weather is perfect for cacti! You can grow them outside all year round. You can even plant them in the ground. 😃

      FYI: I live in Long Beach, CA. I always left my cacti (including echinopsis) out in the winter. I sometimes use umbrella during heavy rains, but they seem to love the winter rain and grow more than expected. However, I have some new ones, and I think I'm going to bring some into the garage. Not sure 🤔

    Can I cover them with any cloth?.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 3 lety

      Is it for shade? If so, the cloth has to be a fine material so that some light and air can still pass through it. If the cloth is for winter protection, then a warm material cloth is necessary.

    What happens if you cross pollinate echinopsis and a mammallaria flower??

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 2 lety +1

      It is difficult to cross between 2 different genus (with a few exceptions). But if successful, you would see some traces of both parents in the new hybrid.
