How to Cut Fur and Make a Gnome Beard

  • Today at ruffles and rain boots, I'm teaching you how to cut fur the right way. After having made an insane amount of gnomes - sock gnomes, cone gnomes, sewn gnomes, gnomes from patterns, gnomes from recycled containers... well, you get it, I have figured out the easiest way to cut and style faux fur.
    One of the biggest questions I'm asked is how to make a gnome beard with faux fur. Some tutorials don't tell you the type of fur or the "right" way to cut faux fur. And no one ever tells you how to style it!
    If you want truly Pinterest-worthy gnomes, this is the gnome beard tutorial for you.

    The Mongolian fur is my favorite.... It's expensive though but you only need a little because it's so luscious and full it's my favorite... I've been cutting fur for 10 months I'm still not good at it but I'm getting better I don't throw anything away if I have little pieces I glue them together roll them up in a ball like you do and put them on as a pom pom... I just love your creations and your Channel sometimes I watch your videos over and over again oh my personal thing would be for you to send me one of your creations that would be the highlight of my year.... you take care... 💓

    Well, the faux fur I got at Joanne’s was 35.00 for a shaggy white, 20.00 for a silver looking one, and 20.00 for a brown one. When they cut it for me there was so much trash and working with it has been heck, I’ve been regretting making them, or trying to.
    And my fur doesn’t even seem like it has the same texture as yours, but it is what they led me to. But I’m trying to cut it like you said, just the backing.
    I have some younger great grands, do you think the shedding will stop?
    I’m glad I found your video on cutting, maybe tomorrow will be better. I already bought all the expensive socks and pellets and all that, yours are fab and I’ll bet they didn’t cost what I’ve paid for my materials. By if I can get the fur to work , it will be worth it all for the kids. Anymore help you have I will appreciate, thanks for your cuties!

    • @SarahNenniDaher
      @SarahNenniDaher  Před 4 lety

      Oh my goodness, I'm sorry you're having trouble!
      You're right in that only cutting the backing is the way to go. I'm not sure what the craft store gave you, but I love the Mongolian fur (it's a long, 3-inch pile). ALL craft fur will work with this method, though.
      It will stop shedding if it's a quality fur (most which are cut from the bolt are), but to speed it up, brush the fur along the cut lines, gently pulling all of the pieces out from the backing.
      Let me know if you run into trouble - I'm here (I've just been SO SICK that I've gotten behind on my comments). Sorry for the late reply. :)

      I made 3 baby ones that are adorable. I glue my clothes and hats and go back and stich. I could never have made these if not for your instructions! I’m from the “ show me “ state, so takes me and min, lol These arthritic hands are slow as my brain!! Thanks again for all your help, made a big difference for me❤️🥰❤️✝️

    • @SarahNenniDaher
      @SarahNenniDaher  Před 4 lety

      Darlene, if you just want the braid down the back, I would cut a long rectangle (enough to have the top part tucked up under the hat + the braid.
      Then, I would leave an inch or two at the top for the "back of the head hair," and just below that cut the same rectangle into three parts for the braid.
