    The amount of firewood required in the northern forest in winter demands the use of an axe.
    You need to have a repertoire of axe techniques that include being able to safely split logs on snow as well as easily produce kindling.
    The latter may seem simple but I've seen some frightening techniques where people are literally playing chicken with their own fingers.
    This video covers some key techniques for splitting firewood on snow.

    I really like how you are making kindling, it's a safe technique especially for beginners who aren't familiar with a hatchet. Very cool, thanks for making this video!

    Hi Wintertrekker, agreed - it does require repetitive and consistent application of best practice. Lapses of concentration are not an option. Getting this across to people who have not been around axes much can sometimes be hard. I'm glad that, again, we are singing from the same hymn sheet as it were.

    For someone who has never used an axe before this is very helpful and safe. Thank you!

      You're welcome. Please take care with the between-the-legs technique if you are not used to using an axe. All the best, Paul

    ...comment continued: I really like your last message of thinking about the safety (i.e. stance, direction of swing, angle of swing, etc) for each and every cut. This is the mental discipline I teach also - knowing where the follow through is going to be, and where the potential bounce might occur, and making sure you are out of the way of that swing and bounce. It has to be considered on each and every swing. That is hard to teach, but an essential message. Subbed ya!

    Say Heah Paul, For my B'Day, I got some Bush Craft Gear. First of all, I had to send back my Husqvarna All Purpose Forest Axe, it had a defective I. For me too dangerous. I exchanged it for a Ochsenkopf Axe OX 620 H-1257. It will be used on our extended winter trips, I also had a Baldric Strap to carry it. But I also got a 24"Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the Heavy Duty yl sheath and Sling. It's replacing my G. B. Small Forest Axe for my cold weather use, The Small Forest Axe I will use in milder weather. It's always a pleasure running into to you. Job well done.

    Well shown. The between the legs method is excellent and safe, and a good option for that shorter handled axe. However it requires rigorous mental discipline to always have those feet out in front. I worry about a lapse of concentration for some folks, not staying in front. For flat end saw-cut blocks, I still prefer the upright method on snow, wide bent knee stance, where the arc of the swing on a longer axe is directed into the snow - however it has an edge destruction risk if it hits rock.

    The woman on "Alone" who cut her hand while splitting kindling would have lasted a lot longer had she known your technique. I saw this video 2-3 years ago, and have used that kindling technique ever since. It makes me cringe when I see people using the "top down" method like she was doing.

    I always just split long 1 meter pieces of wood in half using wood wedges and then saw it down to length and split it down further if neccesary but it's nice to know these kinds of techniques just in case.

    Are you using a GB Small Forest Axe Paul?

    • @PaulKirtley
      @PaulKirtley  Před 5 lety

      In this video yes. Longer handles make this technique difficult/impractical but there is an alternative to the side for an axe with a longer handle. I believe there is a clip of the latter alternative technique in another of my videos but I actually don't recall which one at the moment.

    that's how miners split firewood in the tunnel to cook their pancakes in the morning hahahaha seriously folks don't use that method to split wood. just stand one block on another and give er.
