The lemon drop game they struggled on is actually based on a real game called 'shut the box'. And there is an element of both luck and strategy around starting with the high numbers first. It was explained terribly in the instructions tho XD
The only way 2 beat the lemon drop game would be 2 play on an emulator, where U could roll until U got the right numbers!

I buttered a cats feet once. Allegedly it resets their sense of smell so they stop running away. It didnt work. Once the cage door was opened it shot out like rocket across the yard up a cliff and vanished back into the wilderness, the faint smell of land-o-lakes hanging in the air.

Speaking of AVGN, Mike Matei beat this game on over a few streams. It gets to become such bs and you have to do all the minigames or else you don't unlock the Emerald City. Mike also mentioned before how Arin once helped him with an audio issue on his channel or something. So happy they are all friends.
But for now we can only see The Beast!
Luckily, U can skip the lemon drop game and still finish, cause you'd never beat it when the numbers are random!

The "Lemon Dropper" game is a recreation of an old game known as "Shut the Box" and it does actually have some strategy to it! For example, try to get the big numbers out first because using all the small ones is how you run out of options.

At the beginning of the episode when Arin kept mentioning a particular scene he wanted to talk about, I thought he was going to talk about the part where the scarecrow is carrying around a gun

I was hoping he’d talk about how you can just flat out see the Cowardly Lion’s stunt double from the front as he runs down the hall the jump out the window to get away from OZ. I hated the character as a little kid because I recognized his face was wrong at one point but didn’t have the context to realize it was a whole other person, so my baby lizard brain went “changeling! Danger!” and I just hated the character.

Oh! And the Cat and the Fox COMPLETELY switched roles in the movie(the book has the cat being the brains of the duo and the fox the brawn, they're not called Honest John or Giddeon in the book), and they HANG Pinocchio to steal his money, but Pinocchio doesn't die, 'cause he's made of wood.
Also, yes, the Wizard of Oz book is WAY weirder than the movie. The monkeys supposedly help Dorothy and the crew get back to the Emerald City(I don't know if the movie implies this as well, but they get back rather quickly).

Listening to this as background noise was a mistake, because no matter how much I pay attention it feels like I'm suddenly snapping back into focusing on a conversation that's somehow gone so far away from where it started.

With the winged shoes, you can fly using the A button on the SNES controller. They can run out of power but you can fly until then. There are two other things she gets for power ups for wand, the Bubble Wand and a Star Wand, both shoot things around.
On the screen UI, hit points are on the bottom, the top is Weapon which would be those Jewels where one gives 3 shots and can hold control pad up or down to aim the shot, Items, Tickets to open the Emerald City Gates, then the characters in party by icon, the Dorthy icon is a bow. The number next to that is lives, the bows collected gave more lives. The bricks are next which are used to build a road between one country to the next on your way to Oz.
This game is still one of my favorite AVGN episodes

Fun fact: The Wizard of Oz (the book) is often read as an allegory for the political and economic landscape of 1890s America, as populism began to wane, and the gold/silver standard debate was the hot topic issue of the day. For example, the Lion is supposedly representative of William Jennings Bryan, democratic candidate for President in 1896.
The title of this video made me think "so, just a regular game for Arin?" But that was a mean thought.
I mean it was accurate though. There's a lot of reasons to love the man, but an ability to play video games ain't one of them. He's... terrible.

My step mom didn't know what wizard of oz was until my dad told her about it. I found out the movie theater I work at was playing a special version of it for the actress tho played Dorothys birthday, so my dad took her to go see it. She fell asleep near the beginning lol

Where my mom grew up, for whatever reason their theater still didn't play movies in color (This was the '60s and '70s -- town of like 1,000 people). A few years ago, I went with her to an anniversary showing of "Wizard of Oz" at a movie theater, and when she saw the color change she was absolutely gobsmacked. Apparently she just thought all those stills from it that you see in magazines and books were taken separately or hand-colored or something? I always assumed the film itself was tinted and so the theatre wouldn't matter.
Of course the film is tinted. They just shine white light through it.

When my mom was growing up, there were color TVs, but her family never got one. So she had only ever seen The Wizard of Oz in black and white and had NO IDEA that most of the movie was actually in color! Then one day in collage she saw it on a color tv and when it got to Oz she lost her mind and her friends were like '...?'

@@trevorblue4531 Oh surely there is still certainly a lot of luck involved, and it's still just a garbage section, but Arin was still doing pretty much the worst thing you can possibly do. Basically, due to the "sum" rule you can take care of the smaller numbers on pretty much any roll, but you can only tick off the higher numbers if you roll high. So, the best shot you have is to tick off the higher numbers when you can, and take the lower numbers when you need them, which is pretty much the exact reverse of what Arin was doing, because he thought it was best to try to use the sums to take off more numbers on fewer rolls. He was using what we might refer to as a "greedy" approach, which doesn't really work well for this game in particular.
That said, it is still true that if you roll poorly you are just boned, there's no way to guarantee you'll roll the high numbers to win.

When Mike Matei streamed this game, he said he played it a whole hour, and didn't beat it! The fact U have 2 start over after 1 missed roll pretty much means you'll never get it! The other mini games are at least puzzles that can be done with skill!
Also, since U need every ticket 2 enter The Emerald City, the creators knew nobody would ever sit there long enough 2 beat the lemon drop game, so they included an extra ticket so U can actually get 2 the Wizard and see the ending!
