    It somewhat gives legitimacy to some of the crazy designs we see today - Canyon's Grail bars & Cannondale's single tube forks come to mind. This was likely a very innovative bike for the time, proving that some designers are always trying to provide customers with something they didn't know they wanted.

    When you go back and look at the "historical" prices for entry bicycles they all run around $400-600 in todays money. Specialtiy bikes like Tandems typically ran $2500-$3500. This is what changed my mind about "entry level" bicycle pricing.

    Very nice bike. I'd throw my hat into the ring with a guess about those two front metal arms - they might be some sort of dampening, since they remind me of suspension on the old timey motorcycles of the era. Or, maybe they held some sort of light, or just fender supports. Interesting to try and guess, very interesting bike.

As far as the 2 front fork tubes, I believe they were a decorative addition with a nod to the girder forks found on some of the Indian mc's of the era. The inflation calculators shouldn't be taken seriously because numbers after (about) 1970 are just completely useless and hugely underestimate the rate of inflation. In fact, if you look at prices for 1969, you should at least double whatever the inflation adjusted price claims to be. This was a time when Gold was $35/oz and Silver was $1 per oz! If you use gold, divide the original price by 35 and then multiply it by the current price of gold, though a 10 year average is probably better.

      It ain't old, it's just cheap. Look at the budget shifters on the tops of the handlebars. Those disc brakes are factory, the frame is made to take them, but the bike is just a budget bike, walmart quality at best, pretending to be a modern road bike in hopes they'll sell a few to some suckers.

  • @Aubreykun
    @Aubreykun Před 5 lety

    That thing being 60lbs sounds awful, but mainly because it doesn't look like it has the wheel size to really capitalize on the weight. I have a 60+lb fat bike from sears. I've upgraded the heck out of it, noseless saddle, bmx bars, toe clip pedals, a rear rack, and 26x4.0 Duro Fleetwood road tires. I have a new sealed bottom bracket coming in the next few days too. It's honestly really comfortable to ride over longer distances because it has so much inertia and absorbs all the road irregularies. Once up to a reasonable speed I don't have to keep my cadence up and can "rest" between moments of pedalling while in the saddle, still moving. It also flies down hills. The only real disadvantage is that hills above a certain steepness rapidly slow me to a crawl, and I can't do any fancy wheelies or jumps.

    • @garyquail2347
      @garyquail2347 Před 3 lety

      @@KevCentral yes it was meant for a streamline shroud that went where those three holes are and wrapped around the upper part of the bottom bracket where the cranks are and also too the chain guard is not for that bike that chain guard belongs to a pre-war 19 34 to 1936 Schwinn the front and rear hubs those pins are meant to be as art deco and cooling fins and also to the frame was designed with the two top tubes was meant to give the Ryder some comfort.

    Growing up, my dad bought each of his four sons one bicycle. Each of us got a Schwinn Racer. It's a steel frame 26" wheel with a 3-speed Sturmey Archer hub. In the early 60's that Schwinn sold for $59.95. Included fenders, caliper brakes and a sweeping flat handlebar. I rode that bike all the way through college. There were decent bikes being made then. Remember, that this a kid's bike.
    This was back when everything was made in America. Almost nothing being made today is going to be around in 50 years,, let alone 80. This was still true in my childhood. But by the time I was a teen in the 80s, more and more stuff was being imported and the quality of just about everything began going down hill.
    Cheap department store bikes weren't complete junk.
